And here I was thinking Elizabeth Schwarzkopf was the absolute best! This lady is as brilliant & thankfully different enough so she can be top of my list with E.S.... I cannot believe the control she has and this is one of my favourite songs. I love it.. Thank you for posting.. Yet another singer for me to explore. Dont you just love YT? Learn & discover something new everyday. I may not be able to sing but my repertoire of music is building up nicely thankyou!
This is usually sung so badly nowadays that it is a pleasure to hear the notes sung with an evenly produced voice. After all it is a prayer/reflection and does not have to have cheesy emotions gasped throughout.
Great Mozart wrote most of his operas in Italian cause that was a time of fashion for italian style in general.Gudula was and still is the most great performer of Mozart. Her Tosca is not bad at all as well as her great artistry and extraordinary beautiful voice.
You are so right "Lindow" ! She does not posess any "Italienita", nor the temperament for italian roles. In fact she mainly sang only Mozart and german repertory. (Ariadne, Arabella, etc...)
Well, as beautiful of a voice as she had this quite obviously is not her cup of tea. I guess it's really a matter of ones nature. Hers was probably more of a refined kind to be singing Italian repertoire.
This is nice, but personally, I prefer the way Maria Callas does this piece. There is something, not so much vocally, but more...more emotional maybe...or just plain different, emotionally, when Maria sings. Whatever it is, and I can't completely explain it. I just know it when I hear it, and this woman, as great as she is, doesn't have it. Not to me anyway. I just like Callas better.
I agree. Maria Callas's interpretation of this piece is just breath taking in so many ways, as are many of her pieces. I still admire Gundula Janowitz, though, because she is still very gifted.
Sounds like a saw, amazing cutting edge of a voice, but angelic in it's tone at the core. She keeps her voice very light despite it's amazing ability to pierce through an orchestra. I'm in love with her.
Indeed, not everyone is cut out to be a Puccini singer. The same could be said for other composers too. She sings Mozart and Schubert and Strauss marvelously though.
I have a recording of her singing in the last movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony conducted by Karajan. Of all the versions I've heard of that piece, hers is my favourite. You ought to look into it because it is truly too marvelous for words.
Janowitz here at least, one of the most compelling voices I have ever heard. Where did she come from, and where did she go. And why have we not known much about her, in comparison to others of her period. I want to hear more.
Beethoven, Mozart, Puccini, Wagner...is there no end to this incredible singer's range? Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Purity - with a decent vibrato, very rare.. I heard her long ago in the Concertgebouw in Lieder from Schubert and Strauss, will never forget it..

@bernardkulche - You're right ... and her part in Beethoven's "Fidelio" with Jon Vickers, on video, is exceptional.

Not her repertoire, perhaps. But, oh, wow! Such phenomenal beauty of sound.

I don't think I've ever heard her sing Puccini before. I found it stunning and restrained - no histrionics, thank you.

Very beautiful. But that's all. If you cut her wrists Puccini would not flow out of the veins.
