It is going to be Gamera, after the debockle that came out in 1998, Toho would be very reluctant to put the Godzilla franchise on anything that they did'nt have direct control over, The Japanese really hated our 1998 interpritation of the King of the monsters.

But if Cthulhu is a fictional beast made up by Lovecraft AND used in his books... then you would need permission to use Cthulhu in this movie. Lovecraft died in 1937. Since the period between the time he created Cthulhu and the time when he died didn't consist of such a creature in any movies of any pictures (particuarlly paramont), then paramont pictures has no right to distribute this creature into a movie. So with that said, I believe that this creature is something completley new.
Because Lovecraft was a revered writer the rights to his work and stories probably were left with his publishing company or family. Most likely the publishing company. Therefore, if any film company wished to make a movie based on his writings or using his characters they would contact the publishing company and obtain the rights. dozens of movies have been based on his creations and all were made over 25 years after his death. It is going to be Gamera, after the debockle that came out in 1998, Toho would be very reluctant to put the Godzilla franchise on anything that they did'nt have direct control over, The Japanese really hated our 1998 interpritation of the King of the monsters.
It is unquestionabley Gamera, the only other large firebreather.

Right this is just a theory but I put Coney Island (principle set peice for the film) in Wikipedia and apprantly a 1950's monster movie called 'The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms' had a primary scene filmed there. This film was seen as the inspiration for Godzilla, Just a thought anywhoo.

Even though a crapload of people are speculating that it does have something to do with Cthulhu, and a lot of "information" seems to jive with that theory, I am 99.999% sure that it has nothing at all to do with the Cthulhu Mythos. I agree, Lovecraft stories, no matter who they are written by have more to do with the horror, mystery and the human element than just a flat out giant monster.

Sorry, my grammar was off on that last sentence. I also wanted to relate that in a letter to another writer, Lovecraft described his pronunciation of Cthulu as this: "khlul-hloo" where the first letter u sounds like that of the word "full". Also, the h represents "guttoral thickness" as is not used with the traditional "th" sound from words like "the" and "this" as suggested by the spelling.

But if Cthulhu is a fictional beast made up by Lovecraft AND used in his books... then you would need permission to use Cthulhu in this movie. Lovecraft died in 1937. Since the period between the time he created Cthulhu and the time when he died didn't consist of such a creature in any movies of any pictures (particuarlly paramont), then paramont pictures has no right to distribute this creature into a movie. So with that said, I believe that this creature is something completley new.

Because Lovecraft was a revered writer the rights to his work and stories probably were left with his publishing company or family. Most likely the publishing company. Therefore, if any film company wished to make a movie based on his writings or using his characters they would contact the publishing company and obtain the rights. dozens of movies have been based on his creations and all were made over 25 years after his death. SO with that said, you may be wrong.
