When Mtv started airing this, I remember how they used a different format for the credits. Instead of listing Artist/"Title"/Album/Label as usual from top to bottom, they had "Dreams" at the top in quotes, then "40th Anniversary of the Blue Angels" etc. on the next line, and near the bottom "Music Courtesy of Van Halen". I got into arguments with my little brother about this, who at the time insisted the BAND name was "Dreams" because it was on the top line where the artist name usually goes!
First time I've seen this, and just found out that My brother was in this video, he was a crew chief for plane #4, and is in the very first camera shot, Amazing !
@volleyballdoug: That's cool! My Brother is in there too! He's the Crew Chief for the Number 2 Plane, Jeff Taylor! Obviously my Brother knows your Brother. Small World!
@volleyballdoug I saw the Thunderbirds perform several years ago and got to meet one of the crew chiefs. I told him what my grandfather (a WWII B-24 bomber pilot) always told me: "A pilot is only as good as his ground crew." His reply: "Yep, that's why the Thunderbirds have the best pilots in the world!" Hats off to your brother and his crew...the peeps who own #4 eighty percent of the time! \m/ \m/
i love the video. i don't like a few of these pilots that think they are, somehow, on a higher level of thinking than i am. i posted some comments on some of these blue angels videos and they wasted time to send me a message, talking to me like i am a 12 year old. no professionalism. i'm not a spell geek, i majored in EE from UNCC. i'm ex. navy and a failed seal.
Its amazing how manuevrable the A-4 was, definetly to top, or even equial this plane is a good challenge, flying this aircraft must have been the best experience in the world, the ultimate adrenaline rush, would have been great if they would have kept making this airplane with that manouvreability, a newer more powerfull engine, updated avionics, some radar absorbent ram paint, carrying new payload, imagine what could it do in modern warfare scenarios, a plane they shouldv only updated
These are the Blue Angels as I remember them in the '70s and '80s. When our new XO came onboard the America in '82 he was fresh off a tour as skipper and flight leader of the Blues. He brought films to show on the ship's TV.
Retired CATCC man (Carrier Air Traffic Control Center)
Goose bumps here too... brings back many a memory from my youth... I was fortunate enough to see the Blues several times when they flew the Scooter, and to this day I've yet to see a better large-team demo.
I've always thought this was such a perfect melding of song and video. Also always been curious about the story of how it came to be; good for Van Halen for supporting our military at a time (mid 80's) when it wasn't always so popular.
yes, the best , astounding choice for songs, I was in Marines @ Airstation El Toro, and saw these up close, and this song just brings it all together, for what you experience watching them perform
@CASEBOLT100...A4 Skyhawk...was a US Navy and Marine Corps attack aircraft from the 1950s to the late 1980s if you want to wikipedia it just search for A4 Skyhawk....great airplane
@paleo114 I think his plane being hit by enemy fire had something to do with it crashing. You can be the world's best dogfighter and get mashed by SAMs or AAA.
I saw this at school (Year 10, 1985) when a radio station visited the school to entertain us. And for that I love this song, video and Van Halen in general, I own their greatest hits CD now.
@CKSeeps: Maverick wasn't a Blue Angel and the Blues don't have RIOs anyway. The crash was a result of a flat-spin caused by asymetrical thrust due to the flame-out of their F-14's #1 engine. The Blues never flew F-14s,either. A-4 Skyhawks are single-engine, so no asymetical thrust from a flame-out. The only twin-engined, two-seat fighters the Blues flew was the F-4 Phantom II. Also the A-4's not a fighter, it's an attack-bird. That said, I know you were just kidding, too...
hell yessss our solders are comming home finaly we all owe them alot of respect and Loyalty they put thier asses on the line to protect us now we all should return the favor when ya see a solder tellem they did a hellave a job well done THANK YOU armed forces of the USA
@CKSeeps7 They may have been flying that close together, but they can get away with that as they are side by side. When you fly through the jet wash of another plane, you are going to stall at least one engine, and ultimately crash the plane. Top Gun = Exhibit A.
I like the look of the A-4s alot better than the f-18s ive sewn A-4s in flight and they always look as of they are going faster than f-18s (even though they cant) thats just my opinion though
It futures, if I can remember right, F-16s and Blue Angels. My mom was in the Air Force and I think that's how she got it. But this is cool even though I'm more of a fan of the F-16s :P
I don't know if it's already been posted but this was the song that a lot of combat pilots listened to during Operation Desert Storm to get pumped up for their missions. That's quite an honor.
i joined the US navy in 86 too. this is not why i joined, though. i am a failed seal. it took me 15 years to get over that. that was a long time. now, i just don't give a care what anyone else does, they are nothing but high school punks. a lot of talk, but no walk.

Look bro you served....not making the seals is nothing to be ashamed of. On any team there are better, stronger athletes BUT the little guy just stole home....God bless you and give you peace. I for one THANK you for doing what you could.
@TheTheratfarmer I hear you. I joined the Navy in 2000 and just recently got out as an AT1. Back when I was just a buck Airman and PC, I earned a backseat ride over Fallon Nevada in an F-14B when I was in VF-103, the Jolly Rogers. This song was in my head almost the whole time and no matter what my skipper tried to do, I wouldn't vomit! It was an experience I'll never forget and this song made the memory stick!
@TheTheratfarmer Well my son joined after high school, and he saved the world in a P3...Some people just need to find what they are best at, and most of these pilots have training before they enter into the the Navy. This profession is very demanding, and precise skills are required to perform these acrobatic flights. You should support them and lend them any of your expertise from your service or else you are still a failure.
I love the song and the video choice used..... I would really love to see some of these great pilots doing their flight performances live.... they're so good..... THUMBS UP to the perfect song used because after all the training, it is really a dream manifesting with magnificent skills here.....
its good to see my tax dollars going to support some of the best pilots in the world...great video and yes,,, it is the reason i joined the navy in 86...
I just went to the blue angels show in Lincoln NE and they had one of the f-4 phantoms you guys saw, but it was only the front end! Now days they use F/A-18 hornets which are way cooler.
After watching this, I now wanna hop up into the cockpit of one of these badboy jets and head for the friendly skies. I've actually never flown one..... but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night.
Maybe not the cool factor of a fighter, but A-4 was a workhorse over Viet Nam and well suited to aerobatics. Note it's use as the nimble opposition aircraft at Top Gun for many years... More than a few fighter jocks were "smoked" by a Scooter.

i just watched MMPR for the first time in like 8 or 9 years, it brought back so many memories and everytime i listen to this song it reminds me of those memories
I have always loved this song and video since it first aired, and even though I am a Marine they Navy Blue Angels never cease to amaze me just like Van Halen.
I'm retired Navy and had the pleasure to work with both Phantoms and Hornets. Phantoms are waaaay cooler, but Hornets are better for the maintenance man. Phantoms were like the Harley's of the sky, Hornets. . .Crotch Rockets.
pure magic, this song, Eddie's solo, it's all good

I have always loved this song and video since it first aired, and even though I am a Marine they Navy Blue Angels never cease to amaze me just like Van Halen.

phantoms used a lot of fuel. they had the power though, at that time.

I'm retired Navy and had the pleasure to work with both Phantoms and Hornets. Phantoms are waaaay cooler, but Hornets are better for the maintenance man. Phantoms were like the Harley's of the sky, Hornets. . .Crotch Rockets.

@theratfarmer Those aren't Phantoms.
