I think of this tournament as Monica's farewell event because she really injured her foot at the Australian Open in 2003 and wasn't able to play at her top level.
Honestly, I feel with all those accomplishments and with everything she had to go through in her career that she is one of the greatever ever women players. I would put with at #4 or 5
Monica played unbelievable. But Lindsay seemed to have thrown in the towel at the last 2 games. Seems she can't wait to get off court by spraying balls left and right.
I remember 2002 as a great year for Monica. I'm not sure how accurate this is but up until the time of the French Open that year she reached the semi-finals or better of all her tournaments and she did not lose to a single player outside of the top 10.
Browsing the Seles vids it seems 2002 was quite a year for Monica. What the hell happened? How did I miss that one? Saying that, I remember being gutted about missing the match where she beat Venus in Australia.
Up until about eighteen months ago I was still hopeful about a Seles comeback. I've kinda resigned myself to the fact that she's retired now.
I remember the 2002 AO match well where Seles defeated Venus for the first time she snapped her losing streak I believe. It was the last GS I watched with my dad, who was a bigger fan of the Slams than I was, but watching Seles beat Venus was huge, b/c we all knew Seles had it in her post-comeback, but I found myself rooting for her success more than I saw it happen (like the old days). I just wish wish wish that it was somehow possible to know history without Monica being stabbed. :( So sad
Wow!!! What happened to Seles in 2002!!! She defeated all the greats!! Lindsay Davenport, the Williams sisters, Jennifer Capriati, Martina Hingis, all!!!
hahaha 1st All of the people can't be American, so I didn't see her in DWTS.2nd you can have very good form like Kournikova, she's got a perfect physic and now she can't do anything, and 3rd, Seles is now 34 years old, and she can have all the physic that she want, but she's 34, she could do good performances in doubles, but there are no chances in singles for her. Do you really think that Seles could win the Williams sisters now? She couldn't had any chances even with Capriati, that is retired.

Davenport lost her concentration and fighting spirit in the 3rd set. That cost her the whole match.

The quaterfinal match with Venus was a whale of a match. Venus got a couple of VERY lucky net cords and that was the only difference in the match.

davenpots attitude in the 3rd is why she never won more than 3 slams. what a terrible demeanor...

WELL, if she had had the fitness that right now she had, or the body of 1990, she had won very much times against all them.

any chance of a comeback maybe...???

Towards the end, Lindsay seems to be throwing in the towel. She's so demoralised that she isn't even trying.

i know, i hate it when she does that. i've seen her do that soooo many times in big matches. it's hard being a lindsay fan. :(
