At one time the U.S. Army taught that should it require you to have 1000 men to execute a successful offensive, you must never attack a defensive force of over half your numbers.
The reason is simple in that soldiers fighting in direct defense of their home and family will fight harder, more courageously, and longer than an invading offense where many are fighting not because they want to, but are ordered to.
I seldom feel any sympathy for the German soldiers of WW2 but those poor guys, especially the young ones were SO FAR from home at Christmas and being "cut off" they must have felt in their gut that they weren't going to ever see Germany again. It's easy to say "they deserve what they got", but many good boys just happened to be born in the wrong country at the wrong time...
It was no common soldier fault in this defeat, but rather Hitler obsession of destroying something named "Stalin". That was thing that brought disaster. But alas, it is for better. Hitler world would be even worse.
EVERYTHING should have been risked on the breaking of the encirclement at the very first moment they knew it was the Soviet strategy, but what a FLAWED German reaction.....
