@louisisyourgod Pigs to ring though!! Overhauled a few years back, tenor reduced from 27cwt to 25cwt, long draught, VERY oddstruck, slow-turning, need I go on...
Fairly rewarding sound, but I remember them being slightly quiet in the RR, and not as nice sounding as from outside!!
Change ringing is a system based on permutations of a sequence of numbers (each bell having a number), so hearing a tune would not be possible. The bells in this video were cast in 1771.
We were very sad that we didn't take more video of Salisbury. We loved it there. I see a lot of videos with the Cathedral, but none with the area around the main library or the mall. Such a shame...
This is not a carillon trying to play a song. This is change ringing, where bells sound mathematical sequences that can last for hours. Each bell requires a human operator to expertly rotate his bell 360° with each pull of a rope. There are eight people ringing these bells. This style of ringing is practiced mainly in the UK and parts of Italy (a different but similar system), but is rare in te rest of the world.
Tunes are never rung from English tower bells, only mathematical sequences. I can assure you, no one got into trouble! =]

In the 1812 Overture, by Tchaikovsky, there is a part in which this sequence plays.

i read your description for this video, the reason they usually ring them like this before a wedding or some sort of service at the church

Audinos,
Thanks. I had no idea. Can't say I understand the purpose, but it's good to know no one will get in trouble for that ringing. :)
