I loved the little puppy in the end. And don't even get me started on Jeremy Irons, the mere thought of him makes me tickle in the strangest of places...
Irons pulled of the Patrician so well. I'd have loved to see him have a bigger part because I loved it so much, but they know how much one should have. Any more and he probably would've lost the awesome.
Do the books ever actually state how old Rincewind is? I've read all of them and can't recall a single one that does. There's always a vague description, but that's it. The only problem I had with Jason playing the role is that I can't see him running as much as Rincewind does.
Why does this video just have Jeremy Irons in the title? It should also mention the national treaure that is David Jason. He is also as legendary as Irons. Both are British/English institutions
Not necessarily. Rincewind's age varies throughout the books and he is only clearly described as being young in the first two books, which, admittedly, this is an adaption of. Josh Kirby's illustrations show him with a grey beard, however. I just can't picture tubby old Frost living up to Rincewind's reputation as a good runner...
The really shameful miscasting was Twoflower, who is unequivocally described as being oriental / Chinese.
Yeah after reading the first two books the image of a young Rincewind just got stuck in my head. The Patrician is almost exactly the way I pictured him, except I pictured him w/ his hair slicked back. Twoflower I imagined as a Chinese (w/ the Counterweight Continent/Agatean Empire being based on Asia and all).
Didn't the English upper class affect a lisp at one time? Also the habit of 'what, what', in imitation of their own George II? Seems like a bit of versimilartude, an speech peculiarity associated with the ruling class.
Hrmm Jeremy Irons isn't who I pictured as Vetinari whenever I thought of a film/TV adaptation of Discworld - not that I thought of such very often - but he does do a good job.
Whoever plays Moist in the adaptation of Going Postal needs to be VERY good at it. Moist von Lipwig is not a character that can be played half-assed.
and extremely dangerous. If he uses sarcasm, duck. If he uses irony *shudder*, run!
The only problem i have with this Vetinari is that he wears velvet, whereas the true Vetinari hasn't time or patience for velvet. More like the dull kind of black cloth of someone who doesn't care about what he wears.
ahem, I mean I thought he was really good, and one of the two choices I would have given for Vetinari (t'other was Alan Rickman). Now, if they could just give the publis what it wants and make Guards Guards or Jingo... =]
It's hinted at quite heavily in the books, and even mentioned of rincewind specifically, that within a few years of starting training, wizards tend to look much older than they are. The MOST annoying thing for me about rincewind in the adaptation, was that they ignored the fact he's supposed to be tall and skinny, built like a long distance runner, rather than 5 foot bloody 2 and obese!
@musicplusfood In The movie he mentioned that he has been studying for "only" 40 years. Considering that wizzards usually dont shave and that he prolly didnt start his studies before turning 20, I'd say he looks appropriately old .
@Arathir66 as far as i know, the books don't mention how long Rincewind's been studying. I imagine it was added to the film no justify casting David Jason. Not that its important, but i think Equal Rites mentioned that wizards start their training well before their early teens. Open to correction on that, tho. My point is that Rincewind has always been portrayed as reasonably young, tall and lanky. I'm glad to see the adaptation of Going Postal stuck closer to the source material.
The speech impediment is from the Author, a bit exaggerated. The age of Rincewind can only be blamed on the people who promised to produce this in a timely fashion.
bill bailey as rincewind is defo the perfect choice i think. despite the fact that irons was always one of my two choices for vetinari, i don't like this performance. alan rickman, perhaps? anybody who has seen michael collins will no. he has a coolness and an intelligence in his presence.
Ok I am totally infatuated with Vetinari so those are some damn tall boots to fill. He is my favorite hero. It would be enough that he was the tyrant of Porkland, but he is also a formidable player in the discwolrd itself. If the world really needs saving he's your man because he knows who to send to do the job right.
Lord Vetinari was played by Crawford Logan in the 1992 BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Guards! Guards!. Stephen Briggs, has portrayed him on the amateur stage and at numerous Discworld Events. Another favourite is Alan Rickman, Pratchett's own choice. In the Colour of Magic, the Patrician was portrayed as Vetinari by Jeremy Irons.
It appears that Alan, along with others, may have already played him.
I'm a hard core Snape fan, but Rickman is too old to be playing a 35 year old and Tim Roth was the better choice. Too bad all the actors got ripped off in their contracts for the first movie or they'd have presented him with a contract that wasn't laughable.
I agree with some people that eric idle is the best rincewind possible. I also dont think jeremy irons quite has vetenari but i think he could. This just doenst seem right.
i dont think he played venitari with the easy of knowing and obedience i associate with the character. the thing that really annoys me is that i think hes perfect for vimes.
weirdly my vetinari would be darren brown dont ask me why i just see him in his black clothes, messing with peoples minds, everthing about him sort of refined and i think that a bit of black hair dye and he could have stepped out of the novels.
i think graham chap man would have been even better, i mean brian pretty much is rincewind and his followers are twoflower and cant see how crap he is
Although Pratchett's choice for Vimes is Pete Postlethwaite (Sgt. Hakeswill from "Sharpe" and Kobyashi from "The Usual Suspects") at 63 he is probably too old for the role now. My choice would be Ray Stephenson (Titus Pullo from "Rome"). He's got the right look and intensity for the role along with the dry, sarcastic wit and no-nonsense attitude.
I wasn't sure vetinari was the patrician at the time of the first books. I thought he came a little after. But time is a fluid thing in the books, with multiple pasts.
Geekily, I can answer this. In TCoM the Patrician was described as being obese, so most fans assumed it wasn't Vetinari. Pratchett then stated that it was, and he'd lost weight due to the stress of the job. This is inconsistent for several reasons ... later still, Terry admitted that it was mainly a matter of him becoming a better writer since TCoM.
So technically, we should have had a different Patrician. I don't mind though, Vetinari is made of awesome!
He looks and talks not quite as I imagined it, but it's reeealy good. When he said "Don't let me detain you" I too thought "very smooth", than as my brain processed the information I SQEEE'd so hard I had to pause.
I think I might be developing a nervous tick waiting to see this. Also as I keep saying they should film them ALL! (Eventually, of course, I'm expecting them in six months time or something stupid...)
I loved this whole show, I really think they should do Mort or Reaper Man, that'd be awesome. I love the line "what are we going to do with you, you little scamp?"
Yeah, word. I'm surprised they chose Hogfather to adapt, it wouldn't have been my first pick. "Guards! Guards!" would be fantastic! It's one of the strongest books in the series IMO, and would also lend itself very well to adaptation. Apparently they are going to make "Making Money" next up, though.
I love his "Don't let me detain you!" - very smooth. XD. "My" Rincewind was younger too, and I do miss some parts that were cut, but for a TV production they did just fine, as with Hogfather, imho. The Luggage was done neat, and if old Granddad is a preview what we have to expect a possible future Detritus to look, I can't wait for that. :)
Oh - and Sean looks *exactly* as "my" Twoflower did before later we learned that he comes from the Disc's "Asia". Loved him. :)
Yesyes, there's been many changes. and they had to cut a lot, since this time they weren't just filming one book as a two parter as with Hogfather, but actually the first TWO novels - the Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic (makes sense, Lights starts exactly where Colour ends). As for including Vetinari into the story - I'm fine with that. The old Patricians never were that important figures... ;)
I dont know about you guys but i am well dissapointed by the film... it was just crap!!! its not even a case of cutting out the "unimportant things" it was a case of mix and match !!! when did twoflower ever ask rincewind to go to belshamaroths temple??!!! and the wyrm?? i mean come on!!where was the scene with the tree dryiad?? what the hell!! i love Terry Pratchett but he is was in the wrong here!! :(
yeah alan rickman would have been my choice but jeremy is as good a sustitute as any.
i cant believe two flower is american.. mind boggling.. before they do anymore they need to do wyrd sisters.. or anything with the witches of lancre!..
wee free man is project, sam raimi desperatly wants to do. I believe he bought the rights a couple of years ago, when he was still doing the spider-man movies.
there´d be no chance vadim jean woul do this in the nearer future
Recast him because of Fan-rage, are you daft? It is too late for any recasting of any type, and I don't think to be brutally honest a handful of upset fans constitutes as fan-rage.
Recast him in future film-adaptions, is what I meant. I do love any opportunity I can get to be called "daft", however!
And dissatisfaction with the casting IS a general attitude among fans. That, I would think, even a contrarian such as yourself could agree with. The makers of these films DO want to please the fans.
You can't expect them to get someone 100% for the roles. Jeremy Irons seems like he'll do a fantastic job. I had doubts about David played Rincewind as well as Albert, as when Alberto returns in whichever book it is =P they meet. But then I remembered Vimes' theory that there are only a few people in the Discworld, that just inhabit lots of bodies.
Now, roll on Guards! Guards! Or any Watch Book. Although I imagine Wyrd Sisters for Halloween 2009? ;)
I'm not even sure this WAS MEANT to be the patrician from the later books. Although that's what they've gone for here i think.
Just something i read ages ago on some Terry Pratchett fanzine that hinted at the fact that the character changed quite alot, and so it may be two seperate characters rather than the one.
I'd have to look it up...
Excellent though, i'm looking forward to being able to see it :D.
with regards to the patrician... i dont think he s the right choice. Paul Kirby's illustrations are much more what i wouldve pictured the patrician like. also he didnt wear glasses... but still looking forward to release!
I wasn't sure about this - they've bent the "facts" an awful lot in making this one - but this scene gives me hope. David Jason may handle this well after all. There's no doubt he's a great comedic talent, so it's good to see him keeping his hand in.
If he hadn't so recently played Snape, I'd probably prefer Alan Rickman for Vetinari, as that's who I'd always envisioned him as. Nonetheless, Jeremy Irons is a CLOSE second.
I'm so happy with irons is playing vetrinari but i'm still waiting for them to release a watch series live action. I'm up for sean bean playing vimes..... watchya reckon!?
That's actually a really great casting suggestion. Crippled82 is right, though, I doubt the production could afford it. Unless Sean is a Discworld/Terry fan and would do it for mate's rates.
I really feel like saying "I told you so" to all who bitched (that's right, bitched) about David Jason playing Rincewind.
I can agree on the fact that David Jason isn't as I had imigined Rincewind to be, but he's not older that I expected him to be. In the first drawings of Rincewind he has a long grey beard and stuff (and Twoflower has four eyes! :P ).
Anyways: He is doing great in this clip. Jeremy is really funny aswell.
"In the first drawings of Rincewind he has a long grey beard and stuff (and Twoflower has four eyes!"
Well.. yes. Twoflower having four eyes and no glasses, which directly contradicts the book, means that you can't claim that those early drawings justify an old Rincewind.
In any event, Jason may be older than the Rincewind of the books, but these are not the books, and he seems to be fine.
Oh, that's fine. But I've had people actually trying to use Kirby's drawings to excuse old Rincewind, and when the guy drew a four-eyed Twoflower, a skinny Nanny Ogg, and a beardless Cuddy, he loses credibility as evidence. Glad to see we agree.
Oh will you all just jump off the "jasonnotrincewind"-bandwagon. I think he does it very well. And Irons is the perfect Vetinari, in my opinion, although I think he talks a little odd.
ace Vetinari, terrible Rincewind. David Jason was perfect for albert but they would have done much better having saaaay....rhys Iffans or....that bloke who was in Black ball...im sure its on imdb. ^_^
Actually they have in several books around Vetinari, the only one will the balls to not take his off was Ridcully. A pointy hat is very important to a wizard but so indeed is making sure you have a head to put it on. :)
Jeremy Irons is an imba Vetinari!! :))

There can be only one thousand
NnyNZ 3 years ago
wee free man is project, sam raimi desperatly wants to do. I believe he bought the rights a couple of years ago, when he was still doing the spider-man movies.
there´d be no chance vadim jean woul do this in the nearer future
RHythlodeus 3 years ago
Jeremy Irons is ok
i think Alan Rickman would have been better as lord vetinari
beckyj1983 3 years ago

WhenYouveGotTheFear 3 years ago
Oh, that Rincewind and his cowardly "betwaying". :D
And Rincewind shouldn't be old. Period. And they'll be sure to re-cast him in response to all the fan-rage.
Smoke002 3 years ago
Recast him because of Fan-rage, are you daft? It is too late for any recasting of any type, and I don't think to be brutally honest a handful of upset fans constitutes as fan-rage.
Looking forward to seeing this all the same.
crikeymcstruth 3 years ago 2
Recast him in future film-adaptions, is what I meant. I do love any opportunity I can get to be called "daft", however!
And dissatisfaction with the casting IS a general attitude among fans. That, I would think, even a contrarian such as yourself could agree with. The makers of these films DO want to please the fans.
Smoke002 3 years ago
You can't expect them to get someone 100% for the roles. Jeremy Irons seems like he'll do a fantastic job. I had doubts about David played Rincewind as well as Albert, as when Alberto returns in whichever book it is =P they meet. But then I remembered Vimes' theory that there are only a few people in the Discworld, that just inhabit lots of bodies.
Now, roll on Guards! Guards! Or any Watch Book. Although I imagine Wyrd Sisters for Halloween 2009? ;)
AlbertoMalich 3 years ago
they HAVE to do Thud!, that is the BEST book out! or men at arms!
Feltorn 3 years ago 2
Apparently they're planning to do "Going Postal" next. I like that book but : c'mon! I think the watch deserve an adaptation.
zenarcadian 3 years ago
Yeah. It makes you scared that they're not going to do any Watch books, sing Guards!Guards! is before G.P. on the timeline.
Elanel 2 years ago
Meh. Has the predatory nature, stature, but definitely lacks the nuance in the voice.
psycogo 3 years ago 2
that can't be vetinari...
kamatej 3 years ago
Terry Pratchett said himself he pictured Alan Rickman for the role :)
b0lkan 3 years ago
I'm not even sure this WAS MEANT to be the patrician from the later books. Although that's what they've gone for here i think.
Just something i read ages ago on some Terry Pratchett fanzine that hinted at the fact that the character changed quite alot, and so it may be two seperate characters rather than the one.
I'd have to look it up...
Excellent though, i'm looking forward to being able to see it :D.
MatGrowcott 3 years ago
David Jason might just pull it off...
with regards to the patrician... i dont think he s the right choice. Paul Kirby's illustrations are much more what i wouldve pictured the patrician like. also he didnt wear glasses... but still looking forward to release!
Lunavira 3 years ago
I wasn't sure about this - they've bent the "facts" an awful lot in making this one - but this scene gives me hope. David Jason may handle this well after all. There's no doubt he's a great comedic talent, so it's good to see him keeping his hand in.

i Prefer the voice in Discworld Noir

00.31+ :P
David Jason nails the look in those seconds!
DaddaOgg 3 years ago
Vetinari has jet black hair (some rumours are going around in the latter books about him dying it) and no glasses.
Jeremy Irons looks good, but not for this role...

perfect choice for Vetinary! can´t wait!!!

Hope the humor will work on screen, then there shall be no problems.

If he hadn't so recently played Snape, I'd probably prefer Alan Rickman for Vetinari, as that's who I'd always envisioned him as. Nonetheless, Jeremy Irons is a CLOSE second.

heee I'm so excited

I'm so happy with irons is playing vetrinari but i'm still waiting for them to release a watch series live action. I'm up for sean bean playing vimes..... watchya reckon!?
captainmonkey23 3 years ago
cool, but too expensive
crippled82 3 years ago
That's actually a really great casting suggestion. Crippled82 is right, though, I doubt the production could afford it. Unless Sean is a Discworld/Terry fan and would do it for mate's rates.
zenarcadian 3 years ago
Oh! You know who else I could see as Vimes? Chris Eccleston? Though he might be too associated with Doctor Who.
zenarcadian 3 years ago
I really feel like saying "I told you so" to all who bitched (that's right, bitched) about David Jason playing Rincewind.
I can agree on the fact that David Jason isn't as I had imigined Rincewind to be, but he's not older that I expected him to be. In the first drawings of Rincewind he has a long grey beard and stuff (and Twoflower has four eyes! :P ).
Anyways: He is doing great in this clip. Jeremy is really funny aswell.
DaddaOgg 3 years ago 2
"In the first drawings of Rincewind he has a long grey beard and stuff (and Twoflower has four eyes!"
Well.. yes. Twoflower having four eyes and no glasses, which directly contradicts the book, means that you can't claim that those early drawings justify an old Rincewind.
In any event, Jason may be older than the Rincewind of the books, but these are not the books, and he seems to be fine.
edmundog 3 years ago
That was indeed my point. It did drown in bad linguistic skills, though. :P
I only tried to point out that people see things differently.
Bah.. Just trying to defend myself.. :)
DaddaOgg 3 years ago
Oh, that's fine. But I've had people actually trying to use Kirby's drawings to excuse old Rincewind, and when the guy drew a four-eyed Twoflower, a skinny Nanny Ogg, and a beardless Cuddy, he loses credibility as evidence. Glad to see we agree.
edmundog 3 years ago
Tbh, Paul Kidby's Rincewind is much more the Rincewind I imagined when I read the books...
JamesBoxall5632 3 years ago 2
Having been sceptical of David Jason as Rincewind, I have to say I liked what I saw here.
jeffers7 3 years ago
Exactly! Even if he doesn't look like Rincewind I've always imagined, he acts like him.

I was screaming with laughter when Vetinari started talking to the puppy :D "think we should be merciful?" *lmfao*
LifeDestroysPeople 3 years ago 2
oh gods. Vetinari is talking to his dog. In the 'old woman way'. That's... horrible. And so cute! *insert fangirl squeal here*

OronoFTW 3 years ago
Oh will you all just jump off the "jasonnotrincewind"-bandwagon. I think he does it very well. And Irons is the perfect Vetinari, in my opinion, although I think he talks a little odd.
LifeDestroysPeople 3 years ago
"And Irons is the perfect Vetinari, in my opinion, although I think he talks a little odd."
I read that he's deliberately integrated Terry P's own speech impediment into The Patrician's vocal pattern as a nod to the author - nice one!
Jeremy Irons is dream casting for the role. Can't wait to see the whole thing...
benyooro 3 years ago
Rincewind = painful to watch.
Vetinari = win.
plottwist13 3 years ago
ace Vetinari, terrible Rincewind. David Jason was perfect for albert but they would have done much better having saaaay....rhys Iffans or....that bloke who was in Black ball...im sure its on imdb. ^_^
dickinsop 3 years ago
Oh my god! Everyone was right! He's brilliant! I was worried that wouldn't capture Vetanari's humour and tyranny but thats perfect!
One problem though. A wizard would never remove his hat for any reason
Silvermoth2 3 years ago
Actually they have in several books around Vetinari, the only one will the balls to not take his off was Ridcully. A pointy hat is very important to a wizard but so indeed is making sure you have a head to put it on. :)
Delixe 3 years ago 2
lol, well said
Silvermoth2 3 years ago
I dont know how you got this but thank you! Irons looks perfect as Vetinari.

Dog-botherer's voice is right but he looks maybe a little too healthy?

Yeah, I do see the Patrician as being more austere and on the gaunt side.
