the top two comments both perfectly explain this movie...this ending is one of the best I've ever seen. It just raps the whole thing up so ambiguously. The tornado part is so eerie..
Wow...it's almost like the characters know they are about to be obliterated by a mean tornado. I love this film - only rated it a 6 on imdb - yet it's one of my favourite movies..I can't explain that. Maybe becuase it's not enjoyable. It's not a conventional movie...but I love it.
Actually seems I misinterpreted the ending:( See I always assumed that the toranado was coming (ie we were watching a doomed city and it's people). But most comments seem to sugest otherwise. I mean it's raining...so that could mean another tornado is about to hit.
I don't understand or even really know if there is a "deeper meaning" to it, but I still love it because it elicits emotions from me much more than other films. If that makes sense? I don't know.
@McMakisha I felt exactly same. then checked the clips here on youtube after watching movie.read some comments.
watched this /watch?v=iBevc5qQFYg&feature=related and this here few tames. korine says he shoot this film like outside to inside. its a mixed bag of everyhing. for viewer well some ppl homophobic some of them hate feet etc etc. but like the powerful nature of a tornado, the movie itself prooves a boy shooting a dead cat while his fag bro is in his mind is very well defined.
This movie is real. It is exactly what goes on in midwest tornado bait cities/towns. The scene when the guy is embarassed by the dwarf wrestling him down. You want to stop the horrible attack you know is coming, but instead he breaks the chair. I've seen drunks do this. Very nerve tingling. Then you just want to break the asshole's neck. The thrash music, with animal torture, what sick shit ! I can't explain it.
@XxXslipknotfreekXxX its dead cuz of food trap that fag kid placed. they didnt shoot this cat at the beginning of movie cuz it was a house cat then in this scene they are shooting over and over. excellent movie indeed.
how is this weird? the rain is just as out of the characters' control as the tornado that destroyed the city and ended so many lives. on one hand, characters swim in a pool full of rain, smiling and actively loving each other despite it, as a result of it; others shiver in it, cold in soaked clothes mutilating a dead cat. how is that not completely straightforward and understandable? ffs, listen to what roy orbison is saying.
My progression of appreciation of this film started with utter disgust and has bloomed into utter adulation and wonder at what this movie does to the senses. It inhabits so many different areas of the mind and pulls at so many different emotional strings. Too many people are trying to find a singular point in this movie. That is like trying to define a rainbow by one of the colors in side of it. This movie went right over the head of conventional critics. A true, unabashed masterpiece of Art.
this movie is so wonderfull, its not what people want to see in life, and it makes a point that reality is alot stranger than most moveis, this is how life is for alot of people!
the part at the end of the movie where Bunny Boy makes out with the two blonde girls in the above-ground pool while it rains...as Cryin playin in the background
that the single most beautiful to ever appear on film. it has such a haunting grace to it
It's a shame Nick Sutton being the main character of this Gummo't get much attention. He was on an episode of the talk show Sally Jessie Raphael about kids who are drug addicts and he was portrayed as hooked on huffing things. That's how Harmony Korine claimed to have discovered Nick.
there were a lot of interpretations over the movie Gummo because of how open-ended and abstract the film was because the story is non-linear and there are so many layers within the story that are surreal and dark and my interpretation of the movie is that there is a religious message within the characters and the movie itself because the characters were Nihilistic and, maybe, sinners and Bunny Boy somehow represents jesus christ of sorts and Madonna's song Like A Prayer was playing in the movie.
@stassiface i have to kinda agree the ending just made me cry seriosly i don't think theres another guy that cryed at the ending off this movie and i don't even lived or waz ever in the states!!!but some how i understood the real drama of the ending scenes one off the best ive ever seen!!!

You can go to stagevu . com (hope youtube doesnt remove that) Or just go to IMDB, the KEN PARK board. Over there is a post with the link to where you can watch it. I enjoyed it more than kids cause it was more simplistic and less 'all ver the place'.
"Pure porno" LOL To be honest, that's probably why I like it. (A lot of ppl felt that it had unecessary nudity)
For some reason Ken Park amuses me. There are parts in that movie where I find myself just laughing hysterically. It's been ages since I've seen KIDS, but I do remember momenst of feeling it dragged a bit. Different strokes i guess.
Although I can't pretend to really know much about this film just from the clips I've seen, I would have to say one of it's merits would have to be it is a film that can cause debate and conversations like the ones below. Not many films, mainstream or not, actually get people to think about their context and how they fit into our society
Couldn't agree more. This movie is really just weird for the sake of being weird. I don't think there's an actual meaning to it. The pseudo-intellectuals would say that we're "wrong" and too "closed-mined!" We've lost their respect! If there was any purpose to this at all, I think it was supposed to be a representation of life in rural america. Like any hollywood indie filmmaker really understands that. Having grown up in the south most of my life, I've seen far worse than anything in this film!
Failshift: Definitely think you're onto something with that comment. Food for thought: these intellectuals are likely coddled in Ivory Tower communities for so long, the bleak reality of working poor and white trash utterly escapes them...until this film comes along and just JARS them awake.
That's this movies brilliance - jarring awake the pseudo intellectual.
Of course there's no point, and it's not deep, but it still makes you think.
Are you people serious. Harmony Korine is a genius. The greatest filmmaker of our time. Just because you don't get it don't make yourself look like complete idiots by posting these comments. If it offends you it's supposed to. Don't watch it. Go back to watching your Academy Award Winning bullshit and teen comedy crap and shut up.
Could someone explain what's so special about this movie? I watched it recently and found little value, it seems only like a very straightforward exploitation film.

this is unquestionably the greatest film ever made, an absolute masterpiece in a class by itself. stunningly original and utterly brilliant. and anyone who doesn't see that is indeed an idiot. gummo ruined me, because i knew after watching it that i would never again see anything of that caliber, and of course i was right.
Does anybody else wish they'd just cut to black after this and put the girl with Down syndrome singing about Jesus somewhere else in the film? I know that was a wonderful ending, but cutting to black after the silent Bunny Kid forces us to look right in the twisted and hollow face of a cat murdered for no reason would hammer the point home. I felt taken down a bit by the end as it was.
and yes jkqd14, i've always felt the same way. ironically, it's the one thing that bothers me about this film. had he done it our way, it would have been unthinkably perfect, and perhaps the entire space-time continuum would have unravelled. we'll never know, but we have to forgive.

"Stop looking into this so deeply." You've inadvertently revealed yourself as someone who doesn't analyze art. This is about the only thing somebody can do in a discussion about art that renders their opinion useless.
And for what it's worth, I think you got owned by hooper450 worse than I've ever seen anyone get owned on the Internet. Yikes.
How can I act like a retard when a retard has to understand this film. If anything Im happy I cant understand it. And you call it an experimental film because you know it sucks and you cant defend it. Harmoney Korine should be executed for raping the film industry.
Your second sentence is true, but it doesn't apply to this film. Have you ever seen a movie that looked or felt like this one? Or dealt with these profoundly disturbing facts of life?
I have seen better movies than this about disturbing facts of life. I didn't say this didn't deal with it. I just clearly stated that this movie was not main stream... but that doesn't make it experimental.
if you've ever seen brand upon the brain... its a surrealist movie that i feel has a deep meaning of a man who was abused by his parents and then made this film in an "off-beat" and "unique" style. i really recommend it. i found it more engaging and interesting than this film, no offense to those who enjoy it.

Wow this is just an awful film. I mean I know you gotta understand stupid films like these. But this is just...stupid...I mean was that the directors intention just to make a stupid film to fool everyone into thinking it was good? Because I mean that failed...He failed I realise that the film is stupid.
Oh you REALIZED? Wow, what a STRIKING and ORIGINAL realization you've got there.
He didnt make the movie with the intention for people to like it, he made the film because he wanted to see certain things that just werent there in cinema, a person like Korine is plagued by images he sees in his head, and sometimes film is the only outlet to make them real, you dont like it, then move the fuck on-no one gives a shit that you didnt like it, go write a Rotten Tomatoes review or something.
Unfortunately, this film signifies so much of what is wrong in the USA. Basically, the elites just leave the lower class to fester and make their burgers for them. NO decent health care, no decent educational standards. AS long as the wealthy get away with paying virtually no tax at all - then everythings just fine. It has to change otherwise there will be an innsurrection in the south west within 50 years, and millions will be killed.
wow. you are truly a visionary...of complete and total bullshit. "...this film signifies so much of what is wrong in the the USA"? are you fucking kidding me? go back to mopping floors you neanderthal. yeah, we have our problems, but we're not unique in that regard. we're getting there, but it won't be by way of an insurrection in the southwest my brown skined friend, it will be a revolution of the conscious. so go fuck yourself. by the way, GUMMO is a great fuckin' movie.
This is actually my favorite movie ending.

How can I act like a retard when a retard has to understand this film. If anything Im happy I cant understand it. And you call it an experimental film because you know it sucks and you cant defend it. Harmoney Korine should be executed for raping the film industry.
EricLynchSucks 2 years ago
I could defend it, but I'd rather not spend the next 2.3 years explaining each aspect of my defense to you. C'est la vie, mon frère.

you should be executed for raping your mom and inbreeding.

technically I hate this movie so that would be the opposite As in you should be arrested for doing that not me.

i'm sorry you can't comprehend anything other than the linear narrative bullshit that hollywood is constanly puking out into movie theaters.

this is not experimental.
just because a movie is off-beat doesn't make it experimental.
tubbymctubsta 2 years ago
Your second sentence is true, but it doesn't apply to this film. Have you ever seen a movie that looked or felt like this one? Or dealt with these profoundly disturbing facts of life?
jkqd14 2 years ago
I said this movie is not experimental.
I have seen better movies than this about disturbing facts of life. I didn't say this didn't deal with it. I just clearly stated that this movie was not main stream... but that doesn't make it experimental.
I appreciate art... trust me.
tubbymctubsta 2 years ago
like what movie that deal with disturbing fact?
iamnotanija 2 years ago
if you've ever seen brand upon the brain... its a surrealist movie that i feel has a deep meaning of a man who was abused by his parents and then made this film in an "off-beat" and "unique" style. i really recommend it. i found it more engaging and interesting than this film, no offense to those who enjoy it.
tubbymctubsta 2 years ago
alright i'll try it thanks.

Wow this is just an awful film. I mean I know you gotta understand stupid films like these. But this is just...stupid...I mean was that the directors intention just to make a stupid film to fool everyone into thinking it was good? Because I mean that failed...He failed I realise that the film is stupid.
EricLynchSucks 2 years ago
Oh you REALIZED? Wow, what a STRIKING and ORIGINAL realization you've got there.
He didnt make the movie with the intention for people to like it, he made the film because he wanted to see certain things that just werent there in cinema, a person like Korine is plagued by images he sees in his head, and sometimes film is the only outlet to make them real, you dont like it, then move the fuck on-no one gives a shit that you didnt like it, go write a Rotten Tomatoes review or something.

That was the part that depressed me the most.
It looks like some disturbing realization of their sorroundings.. Like every depressing aspect of the film is coming into view.

Unfortunately, this film signifies so much of what is wrong in the USA. Basically, the elites just leave the lower class to fester and make their burgers for them. NO decent health care, no decent educational standards. AS long as the wealthy get away with paying virtually no tax at all - then everythings just fine. It has to change otherwise there will be an innsurrection in the south west within 50 years, and millions will be killed.
kickittome70 3 years ago 5
wow. you are truly a visionary...of complete and total bullshit.

There is a scene in the movie where this "rich" guy calls them trash. And yet he is the creepy molester.
