i wanna go back there too. way bad. yankee4life but my love endures since i saw the southern cross for the first time...and my love will never die for meeting the reason i exactly went that way (South) dec 4 2001 til aug..16 2010 the best days of my life...and the nights even better!
I just love this song from CS&N! It is such a smooth and soothing song to the soul. I will never forget the day I first heard this song. We were on my Aunt's houseboat on the river and the radio was playing and this song came on and I was just floored by how it made me feel inside. It is just so totally awesome! But you expect nothing less from this band. I dont know a bad song from them. Oh how I miss the days of this music, the best days of my life. The best memories! It just ended too soon!
I was born in 83, and this is one of my favorite songs I can't stand modern music, there's no skill involved, you either sound like a high school dropout (50 cent-Jay Z) or a pre-teen girl (justin bieber) call the cdc bieber fever is a pandemic that needs a vaccine
WTF? If you could get Crosby in the studio in the 80's, how difficult would have been to bring a real live drummer in? Great song none the less. But a drum machine? Fo' Rizzle kids?
@wavedonkey They didn't get him in the studio to record the song. Crosby did not sing on this song, despite his appearance in the video. Art Garfunkel sang Crosby's part, because Crosby was either too stoned or in jail/prison at the time (sorry it has been too long and I can't remember which). Either way, the lesson for all you aspiring musicians out there is to just say no to drugs, because otherwise you'll miss out on your group's biggest successes. ha-ha
@user2525able That's pretty fascinating info, and it explains why this song is so tight. Art Garfunkel is about fifty times more talented than David Crosby. From what I gather from gossip, CSN were so whacked out on drugs during this time period that they had singers backstage ghosting the harmonies at their shows. Has anyone else heard this rumor?
I saw them in a concert at the Gorge on the Columbia River two weeks after 9/11. That was one of the most powerful concerts I've ever witnessed. They sang a Graham Nash song they had never done in public, called "Angels" Will never forget that wonderful warm night with a great crowd, they were singing better than ever!
@tonyanthonyfowler .... You're absolutely right. It is a constillation (group of stars) visible in the southern hemisphere's night sky. The Southern Cross' stars were also of great importance to the aboriginal people, who, depending on what part of Australia the tribe was from, had many beliefs and stories on the meaning of each star..... "Jagar"
@btownmxer : Can totally relate - as a 'supposedly' mature adult in my 40's, I long for those days and wonder the same thing - where's all the truly good music nowadays
@hypercube64 Go to Minjabuuu's video. At exactly 4:00, the lyrics that blondwiththewind's talking about start there. And I also think they're important.
This is an anomaly for me. I usually like old stuff from old groups. CSN and CSNY are one of my favorites. This is new, relatively speaking, and it has become my favorite from the group. Solid sound and introspective and colorful lyrics. The metaphors fly.
@rlomonaco69 you can only see it on the Southern Hemisphere. I am a native of Argentina. We use it to know where is the true South (sort of like your Northern Star). It is formed by 4 stars, and the cross is tilted. I moved to the good USA 25 years ago, but this song still gets me....
As a lifelong sailor, I am pleased to finally hear this "old friend of a song" with the moving images of Capt. Stills at the helm of the beautiful sailing yacht, free out on the ocean. The audio is a bit distorted as I'm hearing it, but thanks for the upload never-the-less. Fair breeze...
the heads cheated, lied and never failed to fail...so they finally realized it..check out the song wasted on the way...look around me, I can see my life before me, running rings around the way it used to be (got a clue yet heads?) I am older now, I have more than I have wanted but i wish that i had started long before i did, and there's so much time to make up, everywhere you turn, time we have wasted on the way (clue=high) !!!!! wtvr, these guys got it,up to you stoners, get it or waste away
This is such a winning combination: The sea and stars, a message that you can survive painful things, perfect harmonies, and Stephen Stills incredible voice in the lead. An exquisite classic.
I used to sail and I loved this song. Still have a 30 footer in a slip, but nobody to sail it with anymore. Too old, about the age of the singers in the band.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I was a songwriter...and I had a band...I would never have the courage to bring in lines like "eighty feet of waterline, nicely making way"
Everyone swears it...but I really do like all kinds of music. This is one of my favorite songs. What's funny...as I kid I didn't get the sailing terms...I remember trying to figure out what they "meant" by a lot of the lyrics. And of course I wasn't ware of the Southern Cross (constellation) until much later. I get a kick out of this song. I love it.
Crazy enough, this was my dad's favorite song. So when we were deciding on what to use for his funeral, we chose this song, seemed to fit him really well.
Great song, I remember going to see them in concert in 1988 at the Brendan Byrne arena in the Meadowlands, what a show! The special effects for After the Dolphin were amazing. What a night!
I love this song more every time I hear it. This is a great version...nice to see the guys sailing and singing. But I resent the corporate influence on true artistry. There are some important lyrics edited out of this version. "So we cheated and we lied, and we tested. And we never failed to fail...it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested. Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you...and the Southern Cross." Check out the vid with the slide show of ships.
@blondwiththewind My favorite lyric as well. It's like amputating a leg off of the Venus de Milo! NOT OKAY! I always think of David Crosby really taking those lyrics to heart, while I am doing the same. Whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger! Viva CSNY/CSN forever!
There is a LOT of good music to enjoy "out there". But in my opinion...there are two groups that (in terms of technical "know how") truly know music, appreciate intricate composition, and never underestimate the importance of fine lyrics. Those two groups are: TOOL...... and Crosby, Stills, and Nash (well...OK...add on Young if you have to from time to time :-)
Ok, so two songs I can say ether honestly changed my life or maybe for lack of a better term, explained it. Southern Cross (CSN) One (Metallica). Thanx to both.
I was born December 26, 1968, only my two oldest children thank me for introducing them to this awsome music, they do not make them like this anymore. I would not trade my time and getting to know this music for anything in life, to the post for the person who has his dad in a better place, make the cruise, he will be there with you in spirit, make the cruise dont wait to regret it later. Make the cruise and post a post about it.
The stars aligned when these 3 masters got together. Ther is no better harmony ever produced. True harmony, true voices. true talent. Not autotune!!! Music today sucks!!!
Just a Awesome Song; its a true shame that no one produces music like this anymore and glad they took the time to make us view life at a different prospective
when u c that southern cross for the first time, you know exactly why u came this way......and i know it will.......because it did. and love endures. Now why'd u have 2b so mean....you lose. i win. and u know who u r and u know i know u know this is all about me...not u!!!!
Excellent song....thanks for posting it.

Who could dislike this song? It's been rated, voted, and un-officially posted in the top 10 best rock/folk songs ever.
Not only that, it's mainframe poetry comingle perfectly with two entities at once.

I think my favorite singer is Stephen Stills, until I hear Neil Young, until I hear Graham Nash, until I hear David Crosby . . . Damn!
