@servant1999 I know you left this comment 6 months ago, and you probably can't even remember watching this video. But I'd just like to point out that Microsoft didn't have any involvement in the design of Arial, in fact it was intended for IBM printers and was designed for improved legibility.
I completely agree that Helvetica is the better typeface, it just angers me when people hate on Microsoft for copying it when they only picked Arial up because it read better on CRT monitors at the time.
Helvetica my preferred font, the one I can read the best. I'm glad it is widely available in Mac Computers. I still have 20/20 vision in spite of my slight astigmatism and now presbyopia.
Arial is probably what's closest to Helvetica in Windows and when we go cross-platform from Macs to windows to read Helvetica, windows substitutes with Arial or other fonts sometimes. To me, those are harder to read. People may find a specific font to be easier to read according to you lens or corneal shape.
Most graphic designers use Helvetica because they have no originality or creativity; on the other hand there are some great examples of using Helvetica with abundant creativity.
I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I don't get it :/ Is the movie just flashes of helvetica writing? Or is there something deeper i'm just not seeing?
there is a lot more than you see. Helvetica is not just a typeface. It is the most widely used and incredible neutral typeface. Look at BMW, Target, American Airlines, etc. Why not create a documentary about this typeface?
yeah, it has many interviews from famous graphic designers, typogrpahers from the modernist movement to today's top designers includding an inerview and quotes from the son of one of Helvetica's creator's---Eduard Hoffmann:son;Alfred Hoffmann....and ofcouse it just basically elaborates on the meaning of typefaces we see all around us today
Helvetica and its bastard cousin Arial tells me lots of things; Times New Roman is when I get serious - especially when my attorney and me have to deal with it in a very legal orgy.
I am a highly awarded member of the creative class. As a branding consultant, I am conflicted by my work. I spend the better portion of my day fostering corporate clients whose aim is to visually proliferate every aspect of your life. These companies are driven by market share and have a low regard for consumers beyond their ability to purchase product.
well aren't you all grown up using your big boy words. How old are you, five? Did you ever consider that every aspect of your life is designed by someone. That everywhere you look a person had to think it up. These people go unrecognized every day even though there very design helps us in our daily life. How about instead of insulting people maybe you should take a step back and appreciate the work that goes into everything in your life.
Arial is based on Helvetica to the point where most people can't tell the difference without being told where to look.
And Comic Sans is not a real typeface; it's an ugly font made for some kids' software, and for whatever reason MS has seen fit to include it in every Windows version. Go check out Blambot for some actual GOOD comic fonts.
Comic Sans was actually first made for Microsoft's tips in MS Office. It is an ugly font though, and it is used for things that are meant to be serious.
You are correct! If you wanna get a good sans-serif font, go for Helvetica. It's easy to spot Helvetica: the letter "R"'s tail is curver more than Arial. Also, the "G"'s tail goes downward, like a foot.
for me this font is fine but over time it will die just like comic sans because of newer and better fonts

Variants of Arial? Arial is a rip-off of helvetica. Microsoft created Arial so that they didn't have to pay the royalties to helvetica.

queergan 2 years ago
@queergan It's a documentary about graphic design and the nature of how Helvetica becomes important to the way things are said to us.
There's nothing deep about it, but in a way, there is a meaning beyond just a font.
