drummers who play like this have an advantage that their both hands will develop at the same time so the strength of his hands is equal and they sound so much better as well
Definately a lefty playing a right handed kit. Nothing wrong with that and no need to argue semantics. Hey, Billy's more ambidexterous than most but he leads his left hand when he's playing those badass patterns.
it's called 'open handed' ...and all these guys mentioned are right handed players. But they play open handed, meaning, they lead with the left on a right handed kit.
Cobham just chooses to put his toms in any random order.
Simon Phillips has hi-hats on both sides. He plays open handed. So does Billy Cobham. So does Lenny White. They are all so good that they can play either left handed or right handed. They are ambidextrous.
he's simply playing open handed, for the first two years i ever started playing drums i played open handed on a righty kit. (i am left handed) after a while i explored crossed over playing. I have since kept the cross over, it's more comfortable for me. And one really great advantage is that i can sit down behind any kit and play!
From some information I have read on Billy Cobham, he is actually left handed and plays on a righthanded set up. The set up for the drums would be in reverse for a lefty like myself, but as you said he is ambidextrous like the other drummers you mentioned.Anyhow he is awsome.
Well he may not be ambidextrous, but I look at the way he does rolls on the toms from any direction on other videos I have seen him on makes me think that he is. I havent seen him play left handed and right handed like Simon Phillips, but I think Billy cobham is very talented. Thats just my opinion.
He's not playing left-handed! Many of the best drummers prefer not to "cross over " with their hands when playing! They say it is easier and besides they are so good they really are ambidextrous and could play left or right and switch back and forth! To name a few Lenny White,Simon Phillips,Bobby Jarzombekand of course Billy Cobham! Left handed would have the toms going in the other direction and the hi-hat on the other side! Like Phil Collins!
I think he is equally adept at both sides which would make him ambidextrous but the main thing he has in common with other "ambi" drummers is the fact that he doesn't cross over when playing. If he truly were a left hander then his toms would descend to the left. The only wild card that I've seen is Mike Mangini whose toms descend in both directions! The point is moot because any of these drummers mentioned could play left or right hand setups but you'll never see them cross their hands.
A righty kit has the bass drum played with the right foot. If your dad plays the bass drum with his right foot then he might as well call himself right handed. The cymbal and tom placement can be in either direction and still be played either handed and double basses means you can play either way (which all of the drummers I mentioned do) but we are talking what you usually see. There are exceptions to every rule.
You are all over the place. You're telling me your dad plays left handed but every question I ask you about how he plays you answer right handed! Make up your mind.
Well stew on this Rocket boy. You're dad is not playing left handed. No diagram needed. Right hand kit. Plays with his right foot. Toms in descending order from left to right. He's playing right handed. Keep telling yourself that he's a left handed drummer. You've at least convinced 1 person.
Actually, I read in a modern drummer interview that he is actually right handed, he just worked hard to be able to lead either way.

Just because he plays open handed doesn't that he's ambidextrous.

Billy Cobham plays "open handed" to most right handed drummers and drum setups, but he is left handed to my knowledge.

@rickyon no, hes left handed.
GlitchHalo 1 year ago
Does he play the bass drum with his right foot? He could be like a baseball player who bats right and throws left.

@rickyon i dunno, im guessing that if hes on a righty kit, hed... naturally... play with his right foot, right?
:P *hint at sarcasm*

@rickyon It's not rocket science: he's a left handed person that plays on a righty kit. do you need me to show you a diagram??

@rickyon Except that all his cymbals are in reverse.
Left handed. =)

The only thing that isn't reversed is the hi hat. like simon philips. so yes... again: left handed.
