I love this film and think that it's one of the most overlooked and underrated Fantasy films since 2000 (along with Stardust and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Visual effects were decent. Nicole Kidman was stunning and very beautiful villainess. Dakota Blue Richards and Daniel Craig were great too. Hope they'll make a sequel

they would have had the 800+million movie hoped for, i guess new line panicked, anyway seems to me new line have spent 30 million on the next movie anyway, because of the effects ridden end they took out of this one.
against christianity the golden compass movie does not mention ANYTHING against the church so the answer is that the movie does not I REPEAT not speak of anything unchristian
I would suggest that you either watch the movie (and make your own mind up) or NOT watch the movie (and say nothing about what you didn't watch...)Hmmm. makes sense to me.

He listen to a story that is very similar to Noah and the Flood. my point is that the bible is a story book ADVISNG us on how we SHOULD live our lives
I think it is a shame that people focus so much about the religion part and also dont really seem to get anything right... I really think it would be a great idea if people actually read the books before jumping to conclusions.
The books are about soo much more than religion... basically it is about what makes us humans and who we are and everything that is great in life, first of all love, friendship and individuality...
About Domingo's assertion that people knew that 'human flight is impossible', this is simply not true -- unless you mean physiologically having wings. No real scientist would have asserted that it would be impossible to fly in the future.
Instead, they would have studied the flight of birds and insects and bats, and wondered whether we might replicate these flight mechanisms ourselves.
Just to reiterate, religious people are often so obsessed with their own 'fantasy' that they believe it is the natural and unbiased to take it literally and unchallenged. Obviously this same illogism does not extend to Other Religions. They hail non-commitment to blind guesses as the ultimate sin -- but actually we all support atheism in our lives: None of us believe that mice have a disco in our fridge when we close the door! This is what atheism is: being sane and a bit skeptical.

You're such a close-minded ignorant fool. What in the world do you think you're achieving by telling people to not watch a movie because of something you read through the grapevine. Read the motherfucking books and see that the children don't fucking kill 'god', they kill an angel who fools everyone into believing he's god. Calm the fuck down, quit repeating what everyone says, then come back and present your opinion.
I've always spoken intelligently and objectively. I'm afraid that I don't know about this series to be offended, I fail to see how it would be possible to "kill" a transcendent and omni-present being. From what I know of the author, he is an atheist and perhaps his perception of God is slightly skewed.
While I agree with some of what you said, I feel compelled to point out that God is not forgiving in most modern religions, really only Judaism and Christianity describe God as forgiving. Personally, I have never approved of church dominance. In my opinion the only true authority on Earth is God.
You think that every war in history was started because of religion? Philosophically speaking, I would have to say that people do evil because of their desire for power, and wealth.
Men cause wars not religion. Religion may be used as a false pretext but look at history. What's more likely? Every war from the Crusades to the present day were started because of either, intolerance, or both.
my dads friend said that the movie is basicly about killing god.. but the action in the preview made me kinda jump out of my seat... what if the book was just FICTION!? but really, is it fiction? someone tell me or give me more detail about it, thanx =]
The books are incredible, but the film was mediocre if not poor. It turned the book with all its dark bits and complex characters into a typical Hollywood happy story where everything is wonderful and characters are very easily identifiable as good guys or bad guys.
WHY do filmmakers feel the need to alter stories? There are reasons that good books sell millions, why change them?
A movie is a movie. A book is a book. They are both little things called........FICTION! You don't have to believe a word about them and if you truly believe your faith you will not be "influenced" by them at all.
ok, but don't people have the right to their own opinion. They can choose whether the books influence them or not. They can choose whether to read the books, or go to the movies.
I believe in God, and yes, i've read the books and i loved them. And yes,i am going to the movie someday. I'm not very religious, so maybe that's why i'm not offended by this movie. But maybe it's because you people need to lighten up!! Like really it's just a movie for god's sake! It's fiction! And whatever, you guys have a right to your opinion, but seriously, there's more to life than religion.
I don't know, books teach people and influence people's values; ie, books have a direct influence upon your life, one way or another, small or large, good or bad. So when an author is outright attacking my beliefs, how do you expect me to take well to his book?
Must people always find something to complain about? Honestly, it's a MOVIE. You don't even have to see it if you don't want to! Any one with a problem needs to get over themselves. The Christian religion isn't the only one out there, and you don't need to be getting so offensive when someone else states their views.
Read my other post. Books influence people, the movie is based off of the book; sure, the movie is watered down, but it is still supporting the general idea...oh, and the director says the next to flicks won't be watered down, at all. So hello anti-religion in the next two films.
I don't understand, I think you're only proving my point. Honestly, I just find it annoying when people have to complain about others just for stating their opinion. I feel many times Christians belive their relgion is superior, and that they're very sensitive when others aren't so enthusiastic about their religion. They shouldn't feel that way, because even though I think they have the right to their beliefs, their beliefs aren't better than anyone elses.
Of course, Pullman has the right to his belief, but Pullman is the one who does not like my belief - in fact, he hates it. And honestly, I could care less that Pullman hates Christianity, but the fact that he wants to make money by a trilogy that's whole pupose is to kill God, and influence little children, the most innocent, that does not stand well w/ me.
Funny. The author of the Golden Compass wrote the book because HE WAS OFFENDED by Christianity.
So apparently it is OK for him to be offended and act on that, and complain about Christianity, but not OK for Christians to complain about him and what he writes?
I've only said it's okay to state your opinion. People need to stop complaining over insignificant things. Open your mind a little instead of being so fucking thick.
Well, pudgenet does have a point. It seems today that Christians can be offended but they cannot be the offensive. It is truly unfair if you think about it. But life is unfair anyway. lol.
Philip Pullman was the one complaining first, when he WROTE THE DAMNED BOOK. And now you are bitching because people are complaining about his complaining.
You are twisting my words. I never said I agreed with the movie, you're assuming I do. The way you're overreacting right now is only showing how much you detest anyone who disagrees with you.
And really, I'm not saying Christians can't be on the offensive, to something of actual importance and not an unimportant movie for example, but when you're on the offensive all the time it can get a little wearing. If you wouldn't complain so much maybe less people would have a problem with you. Either way, I'm not going to keep going back and forth with you. I don't argue with idiots.
Shrug. I only pointed out the illogical nature of attacking one group of "complainers" while giving a pass to the other.
As to detesting anyone who disagrees with me ... wow. What bullshit. All I did was disagree with you, and then YOU called me an "idiot" and "fucking thick." Pull the other one.
It's not illogical. A guy made a movie based on a religious book. Some people don't agree with it. Their automatically on top of it, saying it shouldn't be made or shown. Who the hell do they think they are? Right now the people who disagree with this film, are trying to stop his opinion from even being heard, not just voicing their own. Those are the people I have a problem with.
The director already changed the movie to satisfy all who complained and whined. He shouldn't of had to. Last time I checked it's a free country, he has the right to say whatever he wants. In this case, the difference between him and them, is the people with a problem are taking that right away.
I couldn't care less what the director did. The source material exists to undermine my beliefs.
And he DIDN'T "have to" change anything, because this IS a free country. You're making that up. No one is taking anyone's rights away. That simply never happened, and is not happening.
Must people always find something to complain about? Honestly, it's a MOVIE. You don't even have to see it if you don't want to! Any one with a problem needs to get over themselves. The Christian religion isn't the only one out there, and you don't need to be getting so offended when someone else states their views.
grievousfan, that's just false. Pullman is quoted by the Washington Post in 2001 as saying that in his books, "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." Can't be any more clear than that.
And if the newspapers said that the current bishop was drowning babies during christenings and eating them would you believe them? Papers twist words and make up stories. Phillip Pullman actually said that he wrote the story and it was up to the readers to figure out what it means.
Do you have any evidence his MANY quotes saying he is trying to "kill God" or "undermine" religious belief were false?
And on the other hand, we have Pullman saying the end of the Narnia books is "one of the most vile moments in the whole of children's literature" -- an article he wrote, not a secondhand quote -- and calling it propaganda and saying his books exist to counteract that.
Huh? So because he didnt like the end of Narnia makes him automatically an atheist? Its his opinion! If I disliked the end of amber spyglass would that make me a christian? No.And no I have no evidence against his many quotes but I have seen video interviews with him and he said that he does not believe in imposing any particular story on the reader.
It's not merely that Pullman didn't "like" the end of Narnia. He thought the idea of life in heaven being better than life on earth was "vile" and "life-hating."
And he said he wrote his books specifically to counteract such notions.
Them's the facts: he is out to destroy Christianity. And unsurprisingly, Christians fight back against him. Duh.
I think you missread his interview. He just doesn't believe that we all should only believe that the after life will be blissfull when at the end of the day it could be worse than this life. What would happen if we went to the after life and it was a dark misserable place? We would go insane! He is not out to destroy christianity hes just offering a differnat view on life and after-life.
He never said he wanted to undermine christianity in his books. His views of the church are purely outside of HDM.
And he never killed god in the books. The children in the books set otu to save the substance dust which the church think is evil and attempts to destroy. The book is about abuse of power how easy it is to be mistook. Not about how the church is wrong.
You're lying. He specifically said he was trying to undermine Christianity in his books, as quoted by the Washington Post, and you have provided no reason to disbelieve the quote. As you are unwilling to discuss this honestly, I will no longer discuss this with you.
Hehehe I won the fight! You have no true evidence to back your claims apart from an article in a newspaper. You have never talked to him yourself so you cant really claim your evidence is right same as neither can I. Anyway pudgnet finally stood down. Its safe for the fans to come out again! WHOOT!
You "won" the "fight" by claming Pullman did not say something that he was quoted as saying, that he did not deny saying, and that YOU ADMIT you don't know he didn't say.
No I said I cant back my evidence up the smae way you cant. But the only difference is you couldn't even if you had it on you as its from a tabloid newspaper. So no Im as much as a liar as you.
This is crazy as hell somebody arguing over two obvious fairy tails "GOD DAMN".You people can not be serious trust me christianity was never meant to be ...
THERE is no thought you can conceive in your atrophied "christian mind' that i couldnt answer you cant think any deeper than your 'god'. Dont trust me ,look outside then look inside now ask yourself honestly WHERE HAS god gone? and was he ever there remember when you realised santa wasnt real and he never showed up again EVOLVE YOUR MIND ...OH yeah pudge refer to me as HEADBABOON in the FUTURE I AM OBVIOUSLY YOUR ELDER.
baboon, like I said. You couldn't answer. You didn't even try. Instead, you made ad hominem attacks (serving also as red herring fallacies). Thanks for proving my point.
The only reason he has not succeeded is because gOD KEEPS HIDING Iknow he couldnt be afraid of Pullman or did Pullman suceed I havent seen god lately have you?
Be more like Ozymandius117 at least. I have no problem listening to his opinion, he's not being a completely ignorant sounding asshole. He's just saying what he thinks.
This movie sucks. It's got a -20% rating on rotten tomatoes. I don't care about the theme, or the author's intent. The bottom line is that is a horrible movie based off a crap series of knock-off books of the Chronicles of Narnia.
no. NO. NO no. this movie is a lie. dont play dumb. i no what you guys are up to. well im against it! THIS IS AN ANTICHRISTIAN MOVIE! you are all liers! well you dont have my side. quit making fun of us! christians are good people, not evil! i am sick of these lies! i will not stand for it! ive told everybody i no NOT to see this FAKE movie! LIERS!!!!!
And sometimes slow. The book has been around for almost a decade and only NOW people are making a fuss?
If the protesters had had any brains they would have keep their mouths shut. Now all they have succeeded in doing is providing free media for the books and the film -- thanks to them, Phillip Pullman is laughing all the way to the bank.
Mmk.. christians aren't neccesarily good people.. this movie isn't fake...this movie points out facts about how the church has treated heretics, Jews, Muslims, natives of North America, etc..
Most movies are lies.. and it's of course it's fake, it's fictional... there's nothing wrong with this movie... i think that both sides should open their minds..
I go to a catholic school, have catholic friends, take a religion class yadayada but really, you can't poison your mind any more by watching this movie than by not watching it because you believe it is atheist.. the catholic church was really like what they are trying to show.

Religious nut jobs. I honestly don't know why you people think this book is about god dying.

In book 3, God does die, so I guess that's where the movies are going too (unless they leave that out - that would really piss me off lol)

You're such a close-minded ignorant fool. What in the world do you think you're achieving by telling people to not watch a movie because of something you read through the grapevine. Read the motherfucking books and see that the children don't fucking kill 'god', they kill an angel who fools everyone into believing he's god. Calm the fuck down, quit repeating what everyone says, then come back and present your opinion.
sonnyxxxmoore 4 years ago 2
I've always spoken intelligently and objectively. I'm afraid that I don't know about this series to be offended, I fail to see how it would be possible to "kill" a transcendent and omni-present being. From what I know of the author, he is an atheist and perhaps his perception of God is slightly skewed.

While I agree with some of what you said, I feel compelled to point out that God is not forgiving in most modern religions, really only Judaism and Christianity describe God as forgiving. Personally, I have never approved of church dominance. In my opinion the only true authority on Earth is God.
DomingoHMaCoolstein 4 years ago
You think that every war in history was started because of religion? Philosophically speaking, I would have to say that people do evil because of their desire for power, and wealth.
DomingoHMaCoolstein 4 years ago 4
Guess what, these comments? Yep, they're part a religious war too. You can deny it, but then you'd become officially oblivious to fact.
Fact: Wars cause more death than life.
Fact: Religion is the basis for most every war in the middle east, the south, the north and the west (everywhere).
Fact: Religion is the biggest cause of death in the world.
Onision 4 years ago 2
only the oppressing religions.
jaderox007 4 years ago
Men cause wars not religion. Religion may be used as a false pretext but look at history. What's more likely? Every war from the Crusades to the present day were started because of either, intolerance, or both.

Yorkiebar1 4 years ago
yaay.. well said, I totally agree with you...
Besides it is nice to find out that someone is disappointed to. THANKS...
I have no idea why they do it, but just the idea to turn about 400 amazing pages into less than two hours of film it is impossible.

A movie is a movie. A book is a book. They are both little things called........FICTION! You don't have to believe a word about them and if you truly believe your faith you will not be "influenced" by them at all.

It's not our faith we're worried about.

bigfluff73 4 years ago
ok, but don't people have the right to their own opinion. They can choose whether the books influence them or not. They can choose whether to read the books, or go to the movies.
67jOy67 4 years ago
I believe in God, and yes, i've read the books and i loved them. And yes,i am going to the movie someday. I'm not very religious, so maybe that's why i'm not offended by this movie. But maybe it's because you people need to lighten up!! Like really it's just a movie for god's sake! It's fiction! And whatever, you guys have a right to your opinion, but seriously, there's more to life than religion.
67jOy67 4 years ago
I don't know, books teach people and influence people's values; ie, books have a direct influence upon your life, one way or another, small or large, good or bad. So when an author is outright attacking my beliefs, how do you expect me to take well to his book?
Ozymandius117 4 years ago 2

He made perfect sense. You can believe in God/Jesus, yet not adhere to any specific religion like Christianity, Zoroastrianism..etc.
jedimaster9 4 years ago
Must people always find something to complain about? Honestly, it's a MOVIE. You don't even have to see it if you don't want to! Any one with a problem needs to get over themselves. The Christian religion isn't the only one out there, and you don't need to be getting so offensive when someone else states their views.
and seriously...IT'S A FRICKEN MOVIE!
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago 3
Read my other post. Books influence people, the movie is based off of the book; sure, the movie is watered down, but it is still supporting the general idea...oh, and the director says the next to flicks won't be watered down, at all. So hello anti-religion in the next two films.
Ozymandius117 4 years ago
I don't understand, I think you're only proving my point. Honestly, I just find it annoying when people have to complain about others just for stating their opinion. I feel many times Christians belive their relgion is superior, and that they're very sensitive when others aren't so enthusiastic about their religion. They shouldn't feel that way, because even though I think they have the right to their beliefs, their beliefs aren't better than anyone elses.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
Of course, Pullman has the right to his belief, but Pullman is the one who does not like my belief - in fact, he hates it. And honestly, I could care less that Pullman hates Christianity, but the fact that he wants to make money by a trilogy that's whole pupose is to kill God, and influence little children, the most innocent, that does not stand well w/ me.
Ozymandius117 4 years ago
Funny. The author of the Golden Compass wrote the book because HE WAS OFFENDED by Christianity.
So apparently it is OK for him to be offended and act on that, and complain about Christianity, but not OK for Christians to complain about him and what he writes?
Come on, now.
pudgenet 4 years ago
Don't twist my words...idiot honestly.
I've only said it's okay to state your opinion. People need to stop complaining over insignificant things. Open your mind a little instead of being so fucking thick.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
Well, pudgenet does have a point. It seems today that Christians can be offended but they cannot be the offensive. It is truly unfair if you think about it. But life is unfair anyway. lol.
Ozymandius117 4 years ago
I didn't twist your words, "fucking" "idiot."
Philip Pullman was the one complaining first, when he WROTE THE DAMNED BOOK. And now you are bitching because people are complaining about his complaining.
You're a damned hypocrite. Pull your head out.
pudgenet 4 years ago
You are twisting my words. I never said I agreed with the movie, you're assuming I do. The way you're overreacting right now is only showing how much you detest anyone who disagrees with you.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
And really, I'm not saying Christians can't be on the offensive, to something of actual importance and not an unimportant movie for example, but when you're on the offensive all the time it can get a little wearing. If you wouldn't complain so much maybe less people would have a problem with you. Either way, I'm not going to keep going back and forth with you. I don't argue with idiots.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
Shrug. I only pointed out the illogical nature of attacking one group of "complainers" while giving a pass to the other.
As to detesting anyone who disagrees with me ... wow. What bullshit. All I did was disagree with you, and then YOU called me an "idiot" and "fucking thick." Pull the other one.
pudgenet 4 years ago
...wow....XD
It's not illogical. A guy made a movie based on a religious book. Some people don't agree with it. Their automatically on top of it, saying it shouldn't be made or shown. Who the hell do they think they are? Right now the people who disagree with this film, are trying to stop his opinion from even being heard, not just voicing their own. Those are the people I have a problem with.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
The director already changed the movie to satisfy all who complained and whined. He shouldn't of had to. Last time I checked it's a free country, he has the right to say whatever he wants. In this case, the difference between him and them, is the people with a problem are taking that right away.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
I couldn't care less what the director did. The source material exists to undermine my beliefs.
And he DIDN'T "have to" change anything, because this IS a free country. You're making that up. No one is taking anyone's rights away. That simply never happened, and is not happening.
pudgenet 4 years ago
I never saw anyone say it shouldn't be made or shown. If such people are saying it, they are wrong.
I am just saying I won't see it, because its author is a jackass who wants to undermine what I believe in.
pudgenet 4 years ago
If nobody was complaining, he wouldn't of changed it, he would have no reason to waste the time or money.
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
And I could point to a few comments on this video alone saying things like, DONT GO SEE THIS MOVIE IT PROMOTES ATHEISM
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
which brings me back to my original point...
Must people always find something to complain about? Honestly, it's a MOVIE. You don't even have to see it if you don't want to! Any one with a problem needs to get over themselves. The Christian religion isn't the only one out there, and you don't need to be getting so offended when someone else states their views.
and seriously...IT'S A FRICKEN MOVIE!
sleepawayramen17 4 years ago
Um. Which brings me back to MY original point: The Golden Compass was written with the EXPLICIT PURPOSE OF COMPLAINING.
So you are complaining about people complaining about someone who was complaining, and you think you have a real point?
You don't have to be offended when someone complains.
You're a terrible hypocrite.
pudgenet 4 years ago
Um. Saying "don't go see this movie" is not the same as "this movie shouldn't be made or shown."
pudgenet 4 years ago
NO he had no intent ever to undermine any religion its just the way that the bishops have told you to read the book!
grievousfan224 4 years ago
grievousfan, that's just false. Pullman is quoted by the Washington Post in 2001 as saying that in his books, "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." Can't be any more clear than that.
pudgenet 4 years ago
And if the newspapers said that the current bishop was drowning babies during christenings and eating them would you believe them? Papers twist words and make up stories. Phillip Pullman actually said that he wrote the story and it was up to the readers to figure out what it means.
grievousfan224 4 years ago
Do you have any evidence his MANY quotes saying he is trying to "kill God" or "undermine" religious belief were false?
And on the other hand, we have Pullman saying the end of the Narnia books is "one of the most vile moments in the whole of children's literature" -- an article he wrote, not a secondhand quote -- and calling it propaganda and saying his books exist to counteract that.
You're wrong.
pudgenet 4 years ago
Huh? So because he didnt like the end of Narnia makes him automatically an atheist? Its his opinion! If I disliked the end of amber spyglass would that make me a christian? No.And no I have no evidence against his many quotes but I have seen video interviews with him and he said that he does not believe in imposing any particular story on the reader.
grievousfan224 4 years ago
It's not merely that Pullman didn't "like" the end of Narnia. He thought the idea of life in heaven being better than life on earth was "vile" and "life-hating."
And he said he wrote his books specifically to counteract such notions.
Them's the facts: he is out to destroy Christianity. And unsurprisingly, Christians fight back against him. Duh.
pudgenet 4 years ago
I think you missread his interview. He just doesn't believe that we all should only believe that the after life will be blissfull when at the end of the day it could be worse than this life. What would happen if we went to the after life and it was a dark misserable place? We would go insane! He is not out to destroy christianity hes just offering a differnat view on life and after-life.
grievousfan224 4 years ago
Dude. Pullman called Christianity a "life-hating ideology."
He said he wants to "undermine the basis of Christian belief."
He said in his books he is "killing God."
Please stop denying the obvious.
pudgenet 4 years ago
your post are degrading! Im winning lol.
He never said he wanted to undermine christianity in his books. His views of the church are purely outside of HDM.
And he never killed god in the books. The children in the books set otu to save the substance dust which the church think is evil and attempts to destroy. The book is about abuse of power how easy it is to be mistook. Not about how the church is wrong.
grievousfan224 4 years ago
You're lying. He specifically said he was trying to undermine Christianity in his books, as quoted by the Washington Post, and you have provided no reason to disbelieve the quote. As you are unwilling to discuss this honestly, I will no longer discuss this with you.
pudgenet 4 years ago
Hehehe I won the fight! You have no true evidence to back your claims apart from an article in a newspaper. You have never talked to him yourself so you cant really claim your evidence is right same as neither can I. Anyway pudgnet finally stood down. Its safe for the fans to come out again! WHOOT!
grievousfan224 4 years ago
You "won" the "fight" by claming Pullman did not say something that he was quoted as saying, that he did not deny saying, and that YOU ADMIT you don't know he didn't say.
Shrug. You're a liar.
pudgenet 4 years ago
No I said I cant back my evidence up the smae way you cant. But the only difference is you couldn't even if you had it on you as its from a tabloid newspaper. So no Im as much as a liar as you.

Hm. You said:
"He never said he wanted to undermine christianity ..."
Now you say you didn't say that. But you did.
