John Barry stirkes again with a brilliant opening score. I was never a real fan of Chaplin especially so since he s**t on Stan Laurel, but I loved this film.
I'm reading the autobiography the film is supposedly based on and it does bend the facts of his early life quite a bit. However that should not detract drom RDJ's great performance...
"Chaplin" es una de mis películas preferidas, justamente porque se trata de uno de mis actores favoritos.
La vi en televisión, traducida al español, y me encantó. El reto sería quién interpretaría a Chaplin porque él era un excelente actor, Robert Downey Jr. lo hizo muy bien (los dos se parecen mucho)
Incluso cuando actuaba como el Vagabundo era muy parecido a él.
Es tan conmovedor el comienzo, cuando él se saca el maquillaje con tristeza, demostrando que no era tan cómico.
The opening sequence is pure art, so raw, so real. It is my favourite part of the entire film, it just captures so well his success but also his many anxieties in youth. I have read Chaplin’s autobiography and I would recommend it to anyone.
the photos of the real Charlie Chaplin always had a smile on his face. that chirpy cheerful look. Here in this film, he is portrayed not smiling often throughout. always sad. hmm i guess this movie is suppose to look at how he really felt. his true feelings.
@cloudydaiz123 You're right, this film is based on "My Autobiography" by Charles Chaplin, and even if he was a cheerful and nice guy, he was very depressed his whole life through.
I must say thank you for posting this. I heard about this film a couple months back and have wanted to see it since! Quick question, though. What kind of cream is it Chaplin puts on his face during the opening sequence? I couldn't tell.
@TheMadHatterAmI Well you can use normal cream for remove make-up now too... it's more soft for the skin! ;) I never use make-up remover personly... (maybe I watch that movie too much time when I'm a kid, it's look normal for me :P)
@wmasque its called cold cream still available today a well known brand is "ponds" this brand has been around for many many years and i believe was and is still used in the theatre to remove stage makeup... it was very popular in and out of the theatre
@kitkat6026 That's an interesting bit of trivia! Thanks for answering my question. I enjoy seeing theatre, so I'm always willing to learn more about it.
I have to say it was a very very good movie, but its could have focused more on the film making side of it rather than the social aspect, and this scene with charlie doing the song is a bit cringe factor
the first movie I fall in love with... I see that around 6 and I just discover Charlin Chaplin movies around 17! :P Now I have alot of Chaplin movies but not that movie about him so... thank you! :D
Hehe, kinda the same happent to me, was watching Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy so long back than i can remember, then about 4 years ago when i was around 16 i suddenly felt very curious about the little man with a bowler, mustache and cane again. And now i got all his movies, his Autobiography alot of posters and i cant get enough of him ^^ He's the greatest person i know
I'm glad you think so, because so he is, you should see Chaplin's own movies aswell, thats the closets we ever get to magic, he's the greatest artist ever born.
@DesQueJteVois yea I wanna check other of his works, i dont care if they are really old, they are mad funny and he´s just very creative about his characters
what do you do charlie ? smile . enorme . una mirada preciosa marcada por el sufrimiento de una madre esquizofrénica . la sonrisa profunda de quien ha sufrido tanto que conoce en profundidad el alma humana . magistral robert downey jr .
@LitterboxDiorama Your right, Artist's should be paid and paid well !! Run old Movies here on YouTube with a "few" AD's, not as bad as TV though. I would sit through a "few AD's" to watch great old films here on Youtube! Then the Artist would get some money for a film they did many years ago! Plus Youtube would make even more money, say 25% ! Its all about the money in life, true enough.
my family lived down the street from his summer cottage in the 70's. The town tore it down, but some wanted it to be a landmark. It was owned by his wife Oona O'Neil
@Hania454 YEAH!!!! as the list of the cast was shown at the beginning i was like "WHOA!!! this is an all star powerhouse cast they got in here" ... got me more excited to watch the whole movie :)

(And he's great in Jurassic Park IMHO)
