I was 6 y/o, Fall of '52, & I remember hearing Jo sing this on the radio --Station 1280, KTLN, In Denver, like it was yesterday. Guess it made an impression. Wolfsky9, 65 y/o in 12 days.
To this day, this masterpiece reminds me of the late 40's, & early 50's, with the very best voices in all of American Pop music, Lady Ella & Miss Jo, & Mr Nat Cole. I was 6 y/o, in the Fall of '52, & this song brings back those times better than any other--Jo & Paul, We Love you 4-Ever, RIP. Wolfsky9
Without question, the incredible success of Jo's version of this wondeful song so clearly illistrates just how crucial arrangement & orchestration is. Paul Weston made this song to fit Jo'[s voice perfectly, adding his own Big Band arrangement--the rest is music history. To Paul & Jo --we miss you, but know, your music is forever. Wolfsky9
this is the best of all the renditions, by far. stafford's really got a one-of-a-kind voice, and the instrumental arrangement is sublime. i'm curious how sue thompson's original sounds like though. i'd like to compare. anyone would be kind enough to post it?
Wow, wow and wow! What a voice, what technique and controlled feeling...! Yes, I read too that she had the perfect pitch - altho' she herself used to play it down. Thanks for posting this song.
The original recording of ''You Belong To Me'' by Jo Stafford held the no. 1 position on the charts for five consecutive weeks beginning the second week of September 1952.
Just rediscovering her works...turns out she was 2nd cousin to my husband. They have a photo together when she came back to her grandparents roots and visited her relatives in TN in late 60's (early 70's). Her grandfather was regarded as one of the best 5-string banjoists of his era. I'm trying to listen as much as possible to her music...wish I had appreciated her much sooner. (Better late than never having heard that lovely voice).
Paul Weston was not yet married to Jo, when he created this incredible arrangement for her. He was courting her, & he certainly made an impression, when they came together, Columbia studios, summer, 1952, to create this all-time classic. Jo, you were the epitome of musical class, & we will love you forever. Wolfsky9
You have that right. She has perfect pitch, also. I miss hearing this type of vocalist. You don't have to scream to get your point across. A little of that goes a long way!! Doris Day and Sarah Vaughan were other terrific singer and favorites of mine.
I once read, Jo never thought of herself as an " entertainer", she was simply, a singer--indeed, THE singer's singer. My Mom would tell me that just listening to Jo was a close to vocal perfection as we may ever know; yet, she avoided the limelight, perferring, to " just sing". What a talent, &, what a gift her music is . Wolfsky9
A Masterpiece; this is what singing is all about. Jo's flawless delivery, smooth as silk voice, and Paul Weston's perfect arrangement made for music like we used to hear: romantic, easy to listen to, and just plain, Beautiful. This is the 1st song I ever learned to sing, it's my Parent's all-time #1 favorite, and just an timeless classic. Jo, you were simply, the best of your era; you had class, you were beautiful to watch, and we thank-you for all the music you gave us. Wolfsky9
I love everything she sings. Her breath control alone causes me to gasp sometimes. Her artistry is the kind that is often under-rated - not flashy but sincere & deep - but I think her legacy is secure. Just a fabulous talent. There is a wonderful article about her from the
1990s in The New Yorker. Look it up: "Stafford, who may be the least well-known of the great pop singers of the middle part of the century".
This woman was an icon and her voice was like honey strained through velvet. She was a talent from a time when the world was simpler and not as corrupted as it is now. I get goosebumps when I hear her sing "No other Love". Thanks for taking the time to post this......
Truly a wonderful song and Jo's rendition is absolutely beautiful! Loved the song and your video tribute was excellent Mark! Nice work, I enjoyed it very much... FrAnK (★★★★★)
how beautiful!and although valentines day has come and gone and i just finalygot here.. its a beautiful valentine vid/sonng... and boy was she a beautyyyyyyy tooo! i hope u had a great day!
I absolutely love this era of music and this particular song is one of the sweetest ballads EVER written. I once went and got regressed because when i hear this kind of music it seems to awaken really sentimental feelings, as though id been here before, but i wasnt hypnotised and the regression was a waste of time. Anyway, sounds crazy but its true, great post mate lol
Mark, I'm so glad I sent you this song -- just look at what you have done with it. Just beautiful! 5 *s. Happy Valentine's Day. Will send you a proper email soon -- my daughter and stepdaughter have taken possession of the computer this weekend!
