Its so funny because in Korea when kids turn elementary age they are usually armed with a cell phone. Most students have IPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones. There phones are usually nicer than teachers. I will say Americans are behind the eight ball on this and make more of a bigger deal out of a small issue.
i got my first phone when i was 10 because my mom said that she feels safer with me having a phone. My mom went back to school and she got off at 3:05 and my school ended at 3:15 so i might need to wait for 15-25 minutes for her to pick me up. And my dad was working and didn't know his schedule everyday. So my phone was for emergencies and my parents said that i could add friends too. Its a side-kick phone

I got a cell phone at 10 but it was not a real cell phone. Actually it was but my parents gave me a test to see how responsible I am with one I passed the test and got a real one at 11 and my lad phone bill said I only used six minutes of talk time.

wow, many americans are over-protective... i believe the parents should provide their child with a phone that they can talk and text (limited) with, in case they get lost or feel sad when they reach an age were they are not supervised. then, when they want a smartphone with a data plan they should pay, at least partially, for it themselves. while a parent should interfere if technology is used way too much, i think we need to learn ourselves. knowledge of how to keep safe is important.
@jaaguitar phones do emit radiation, however, it uses radiowaves - the same ones that provide us with wireless data connections and tv, and surrround us all the time. it is not particularly harmful as the radiation is not ionizing.

I have a regular Verizon Lg. My fiance has a prepaid phone where he buys the minutes. I disapprove young kids these days getting cell phone. Not just the track phone or prepaid ones. Elementary schoolers DO NOT need cell phones! It's ridiculous! Even a fourteen year old is too young, phones cause nothing but trouble sometimes, especailly with texting! Some children DO need cell phones. The reason I got a cellphone is because my parents wanted me to be able to contact them and it's really come in handy, you're only looking at one point of having cell phones, not the main reason most kids get them which is to be able to call their parents.
Like I said, you are only looking at ONE PART of having a cell phone! I didn't get a super expensive cell phone to call my parents, all I'm saying is that some kids DO need cell phones ( Notice I didn't say smart phones or whatever ) so that they can contact their parents when they need to. Also notice that I didn't say contact their friends during class. Having a cell phone doesn't mean you're spoiled.
I got my first cell phone in the 7th grade at age 13 when I had a bus I needed to catch that I had missed a few times before and got stuck at school....thats the only reason I got one now I'am 18 and have had 5 phones since then on my 6th one now never lost or broken any of them, I think 13 is a reasonable age
I got my first phone at 8. Only bc my sister was 11 but i was more independent than her and my mom thought it would be easier to just call me instead of making me come home every 15 min. Just not even 4 years later and i am on my fourth phone. I got the Samsung Juke at 8, and a year later I got an enV Touch but that was stolen so I got the Samsung Rogue and a year after that my parents made me replace it because it was a really bad phone and now I have an LG enV3
I got one my freshman year of highschool (iPhone!), and I am now a senior :) I never really needed a cell phone in middle school, but it would have been a lot more convenient to have one in certain situations. My 6th grader sister wants one (she's 11), and my parents won't let her yet because she really has no use for it. Sure, kids claim to need one for "emergencies," but that is definitely not the only reason ;)

It's really handy...so i think middle school is a good age. also my cousin has a phone and she is 6!!! She can't even read her text. She doesn't call her friends or text or anything.there is no reason for a phone at such a young age.
I think the appropriate age is around 10 -11.... especially if their parents are divorced, they may need contact with their other parent. Or for emergencies, especially if their alone with their friends, with their friends and their friend's parents. But if their the kind that may never go out much, or are capable of keeping in contact with their parents without phone, it's not necessary. That's only my opinion though... But the kids may also have to be responsible enough to carry a phone.

Parents, DO NOT count on a cell phone to do the parenting for you!!! If you're too lazy to supervise a young child, except when you are at work, in which case your child should be looked after by a responsible adult caregiver, you should not have kids to begin with.

9 year olds can have cell phones, some way to communicate with their friends, its good to have a cell phone with you, if you dont wanna waste ur minutes on your cell phone, Heres My Advice: On the weeks use your cellphone after 9:00 at night, and at weeknds like Saturday and Sunday, You can be able to use your phone, texting is free but calls are causing minutes. @cdiokno I agree. I think it depends on the child. If they're responsible at 8 or 9, you can get them a phone but nothing to high-tech and expensive. Just a simple one. And then maybe when they get a little older and they have a good reputation like good grades and good behavior then they can get even nicer phones. It really depends on the child themselves. So yeah, have curfews and stuff so they don't go overboard.

wow, many americans are over-protective... i believe the parents should provide their child with a phone that they can talk and text (limited) with, in case they get lost or feel sad when they reach an age were they are not supervised. then, when they want a smartphone with a data plan they should pay, at least partially, for it themselves. while a parent should interfere if technology is used way too much, i think we need to learn ourselves. knowledge of how to keep safe is important.

@jaaguitar phones do emit radiation, however, it uses radiowaves - the same ones that provide us with wireless data connections and tv, and surrround us all the time. it is not particularly harmful as the radiation is not ionizing.

I have a regular Verizon Lg. My fiance has a prepaid phone where he buys the minutes. I disapprove young kids these days getting cell phone. Not just the track phone or prepaid ones. I'm talking the famous I touch. or I phone what ever it's called. Seriously why do kids young as middle school or elementary need famous I phone? I mean, protection's great n all but really? I mean I should at least get a phone! I had a cell phone when i was 12 years old but didnt have texting. I'm 17 now and im not obsessed with my phone, i DO text often but not obsessively. My parents gave me a phone because they wanted me to be able to call them when i was at school because i had severe health problems. Though in my opinion i dont think my child would get a phone until she was older.

Elementary schoolers DO NOT need cell phones! It's ridiculous! Even a fourteen year old is too young, phones cause nothing but trouble sometimes, especailly with texting! You want to know why kids don't write well? They're taught through text speak and then they loose their grammar and spelling! And social networking is just stupid and causes trouble...Plus I think it's just asking to be stalked. I didn't get my phone until eigth grade 9I've had it for four years) and all I do is make calls...

Some children DO need cell phones. The reason I got a cellphone is because my parents wanted me to be able to contact them and it's really come in handy, you're only looking at one point of having cell phones, not the main reason most kids get them which is to be able to call their parents.

I didn't get a super expensive cell phone to call my parents, all I'm saying is that some kids DO need cell phones ( Notice I didn't say smart phones or whatever ) so that they can contact their parents when they need to. I got my first cell phone in the 7th grade at age 13 when I had a bus I needed to catch that I had missed a few times before and got stuck at school....thats the only reason I got one now I'am 18 and have had 5 phones since then on my 6th one now never lost or broken any of them, I think 13 is a reasonable age

I got my first phone at 8. Only bc my sister was 11 but i was more independent than her and my mom thought it would be easier to just call me instead of making me come home every 15 min. Just not even 4 years later and i am on my fourth phone. I got the Samsung Juke at 8, and a year later I got an enV Touch but that was stolen so I got the Samsung Rogue and a year after that my parents made me replace it because it was a really bad phone and now I have an LG enV3

I got one my freshman year of highschool (iPhone!), and I am now a senior :) I never really needed a cell phone in middle school, but it would have been a lot more convenient to have one in certain situations. My 6th grader sister wants one (she's 11), and my parents won't let her yet because she really has no use for it. Sure, kids claim to need one for "emergencies," but that is definitely not the only reason ;)

I have to call my mom when I get out of my clubs and dances so she can pick me up
It's really handy...so i think middle school is a good age. also my cousin has a phone and she is 6!!! She can't even read her text. She doesn't call her friends or text or anything.there is no reason for a phone at such a young age.

I think the appropriate age is around 10 -11.... especially if their parents are divorced, they may need contact with their other parent. Or for emergencies, especially if their alone with their friends, with their friends and their friend's parents. But if their the kind that may never go out much, or are capable of keeping in contact with their parents without phone, it's not necessary. That's only my opinion though... But the kids may also have to be responsible enough to carry a phone.

9 year olds can have cell phones, some way to communicate with their friends, its good to have a cell phone with you, if you dont wanna waste ur minutes on your cell phone, Heres My Advice: On the weeks use your cellphone after 9:00 at night, and at weeknds like Saturday and Sunday, You can be able to use your phone, texting is free but calls are causing minutes. @cdiokno I agree. I think it depends on the child. If they're responsible at 8 or 9, you can get them a phone but nothing to high-tech and expensive. Just a simple one. And then maybe when they get a little older and they have a good reputation like good grades and good behavior then they can get even nicer phones. It really depends on the child themselves. So yeah, have curfews and stuff so they don't go overboard.
