I suspect that the director deliberately used an extra who resembled Chairman Mao in the scene where the parents see their son's dead body. You can see the extra who resembles Mao beginning at 3:13 and ending at 3:17. The camera even pans to the right slightly to keep him on screen a second longer. I've never seen anything written to confirm this, though. But I find it likely that a director knows everything that goes on in every shot, and it would be a helluva statement to make.
Highly doubt it. Chinese film directors don't make their films the same way as the stuff you see in Hollywood. Also, the person doesn't look even remotely like Chairman Mao save for the fact that he's Chinese.
