  • WHAT!!!! that looks beast!!! i hate mellophone though. it mixes my fingerings up with double horn fingerings.

  • @24luvmonkey95 ME TOO!!! I don't like it at all!

  • @foureveryoung99 It's a 1920's indoor concert Mellophone. Weather there were marching Mellophones as well far back then or not I don't know..

  • haha that instument is funny

  • @velaeagle Yeah it's different..

  • yes?! then visit my other channel =D

    -Search: TheBaritonDudes

  • @Stormbubi That shall be my entertainment for tonight.. :-)

  • sounds a litel bit like a baritone or euphonium

  • @Stormbubi I'll have to hear one them to see what you mean.. :-)

  • @ukspankedyank @ukspankedyank yes? then visit my other channel, man =D

    here it is : TheBaritonDudes

  • I was just switched from marching Baritone to Mellophone, and I sound pretty okay on it, but would like to get to the advance level that I was on Baritone, any suggestion youtube videos I could look at that might help..sadly marching season is just around the corner lol..

  • @Liytastic All I can say is that anything you're curious about just type it out on a search and see what comes up.. Good luck..:-)

  • @Liytastic Oh my god I feel bad for you hahaha. The mouthpiece for the mellophone (french horn countepart) is extremely tiny compared to the baritone. Your lips would probably not get used to it until after a very long time

  • @mukraf Been like three years since I even pull that thing out of it's case..

  • I am just learning too, I just bought mine at a garage Sale, thanks to you i know how low its supposed to be on the scale. Thank you

  • @chrissa1984 No problem.. Haven't played that thing in so long now.. :-)

  • I practice french horn too

    一緒に頑張りましょう!

  • I practice french horn too

    一緒に頑張りましょう!

  • well i want to play one of those, i have just mastered french horn.

  • If you've mastered french horn then I can only supposed you'd have no problem with one of these pending you can find one in the same configuration other wise just use a regular modern mellophone that sticks straight out..

  • @ratsplayingbasketbal I think once you've mastered one you can play any of the brass instruments other then the trumbone I imagine..

  • keep at it dose not happen over night

  • Thanks.. I'd have to dust if off.. Haven't played it in two years now.. :-)

  • sounds like u r trying to spit up a cat

  • It fell out after awhile..

  • Never mind.

    Practice makes perfect. :)

  • Very True..

  • Well keep at it.. :-)

  • when playing low, drop your jaw and push your jaw out a little bit to make a tiny underbite, and use more air in general. It'll make your tone much better and playing easier.

  • That's the first time anyone has ever suggested that to me.. Thanks..!

  • More air! More air!

  • Agreed

  • The horn is so cute!

  • Thanks.. My horn thanks you.. :-)

  • Why would you make yourself look stupid on youtube? LOL Thought you were cool with the truckin vids and sick bike but i guess not....

  • I still am cool.. Nothing has changed.

  • douche

  • Don't know what that means..

  • i called MrBioshocked up there an semi offensive term meaning "someone who is mean and or rude".... best way i can describe it

  • Thanks

  • Hi, I play french horn in the wind ensemble for my high school.

For hitting higher notes try the exercise that you do your Chromatic scale. On each note, hit the lowest note on that key, and then up next, and next, and next as high as you can go. Then switch to the next key. Great for horn "chops" :)

  • Thanks.. Haven't played that thing in a year though.. May get back to it..

  • dont pucker the lips

this causes u to get a very weak sound

  • Thanks..

  • wow never new there was an alto horn do they have alto forms of other instruments

  • That I don't know..

  • wow. your embochure is badd. good enough for a weeks practice though

  • Thanks.

  • nice flag ;)

  • I like it too and brought it back with me to America..

  • I don't understand. Why bother posting something that sounds like first week of begineer's band practice?

  • Because there's not many other videos of a 1920's mellophone on here to begine with.. Also it's my most viewed video.. Go figure..

  • You gotta start SOMEWHERE, no? Hey, I like your horn. Do you have any extra crooks that go on that? I have one similar but mine does not have the curly one by the m/p and seems to have been owned by someone in the service (says US below the Holton brand). Maybe I will post a video of it if I can play it anygood. Wish there were more mello videos of users not in a band like this.

  • Very true.. I think I still have a video on here I did doing a show and tell of it..

  • Mine's my ceiling fan =/

I took the video while testing my camera & accidentally uploaded the video.

    Cool horn btw.

  • You can always remove the video if you want.. Thanks..

  • just a tip.....

find your comfortable embochure and you wont have to keep on resetting your lips and your tone will improve

    but not bad beginning sound

  • Thanks for the advice..

  • lol I have been playing French horn for about 6 months now u sounded way better then me . My band director asked me to switch from trumpet to f horn I was first chair yay but it was funny because c d e & f is played differently on trumpet I kept forgetting (But I made 3erd chair at region band)

  • Thanks for your vote of comfidence.. ;-) And congrats on the 3rd chair..

  • Thanks ;-)

  • There is beauty in imperfection. Great vid. I liked it.

  • Oh, I've never seen one of those!

Looks difficult, but with practice you'll get it. :]

  • There was one video that has one in it.. Forgot the name of it but it was under mellophone..

  • Naucz się grać a potem pokazuj w internecie...

  • Any chance you could type in English.. Or Americonish??.. ;-)

  • Sorry for that comment but it write my sister she play on horn :P

  • It wasn't in english so I couldn't understand it anyways.. ;-)

  • Good! Go ahead, but I think you would practice more. I've played french horn. Brass instruments are very difficult to play.

  • Yes I would definately need a bit more practice.. ;-)

  • agreed! i play french horn and i used to play trumpet, it is way harder! but brass in genneral is pretty tricky

  • lol try transitioning from baritone to french horn! It's HARD!!!! lol it really is!

  • Now that my lazy butt has finally got a job doing local trucking perhaps I can get me a used French horn off ebay now.. ;-)

  • you too eh? lol

  • Yeah I thank God I have a job now so I can get things every now and then..

  • Barisax ---> French horn.

    Pretty tricky :) lol

  • basura.

  • Dare I asks for a translation of that?

  • it means trash in spanish

  • Ah.. Thanks for the translation.. ;-)

  • just keep trying =) you can get it

  • Thanks..

  • dont worry you might sound a bit crap but lets face it you just started to play so of course youll suck. i play french horn and ive been playing for about 4 years and i've got to admit when i first started i sounded worse than that now im doing extremely well and im doing Amus next year (10th grade)

  • I hear you man. I'm actually not playing it any more. I was only getting into it to join with the Salvation Army band as my Wife and her kids went to the Salvation Army Church over there in England. We're separated now so I'v no desire to play it anymore.. I do admire the sound of a French horn though.. Very cool, especally in and large room where you can get some echo..

  • dont worry you might sound a bit crap but lets face it you just started to play so of course youll suck. i play french horn and ive been playing for about 4 years and i've got to admit when i first started i sounded worse than that now im doing extremely well and im doing Amus next year (10th grade)

  • embouchure.....dude.... embouchure.....

  • Agreed..

  • get your lips tighter and dont put so much pressure on the mouthpeice the more pressure less sound u get

set your ombaschar and do it!!

    good job keep it up

  • Thanks for the advice..

  • 2 much pressure on your mouth don't push...the more you push the less sound you'll get..but over all nice job keep it up...& you'll need a lot & i mean a lot of practise to play in salvation army i hope you achieve your goal...i already play solo cornet for salvation army & it's very challenging...but i love the warm sound of brass good choice of intrument go brass!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the wise tips.. I'm no longer practicing. My ambition was for the SA band in Gorse Hill Swindon in England.. I'm now back in America.

  • i think you have a "French french horn". the horn that is refered to in the US as the "French" horn was actually made in Germany, with rotary valves. the kind that it looks like you may have (although i've only read descriptions of what they look like) was smaller with piston valves and actually made in France. But i'm pretty sure that's not a mellophone (but i think you've already established that)

  • Closest it comes to a French horn I believe is one of the crocks which puts it in the same key as a French horn but.. Doesn't sound like one to me though..

  • Oh well I play French horn and it does sound similar to a French horn. but since it isn't an exact French horn it wouldn't sound the same.

  • I don't think it's a mellophone, either. Mellos are the marching version of an alto horn. However, it does sound like a mello, so I'd have to say that it is and alto horn. Look up a mellophone online. They look quite different than that.

  • I did look up some stuff.. The one I've got is a regular mellophone of the 1920's 30's, then supposedly the mellophone of today was the marching version that came out. Mine was basically for indoor band preformances.. You can see one exactly like mine on Youtube being professionally played

  • Oh, okay. Got'cha. That's pretty sweet! Have fun learning. :)

  • no offense dude you suck im sry but im 13 have played trumpet for 3 years and 1 day my band director told me to learn french horn i went home that weekend learned to play it and have been playing it for 3 weeks and i can play a Bb scale with nothing but moving my hand around in hte bell

  • No offense taken.. I really don't care if others think I suck even if I do suck.. Most people if you haven't already realised it normally do suck when like me they're just starting out. I commend you for your experience. The point then is that there's not many Mellophones in this configuration on youtube and it's more of a show and tell of the instrument itself and roughly how it sounds.

  • omg the same thing happend to me cpt i suck at the trumpet but i cant play any scale just by moving my hand in the bell

  • this isnt a Mellophone. This is a french horn. the mellophone is pretty much a french horn but is for marching.

  • Maybe you should try clarinet or possibly a violin..

Kidding about they violin.. but maybe a snare drum.. yea a snare drum

  • I've got videos on here with me doing the violin.. I've not tried a clarinet.. I've actually had a pair of snairs once that I'd brush on an antique flour tin.

  • i have one of those.

instead of using crooks, mine has a knob that you turn to change the pitch from Eb to F.

i stopped playing the mellophone about 4 years ago, and i've switched to french horn, but i still have it.

my mellophone was made in the early 1930s.

    it's really cool.

  • Sounds very cool.. I haven't played this one in awhile. Still just learning. I'm hoping to join a Salvation Army Band with it.. I'd sit in with the Tenor/Alto horn section with the Eb crook in place.. Does yours sound anything like the French horn when in the same key or is it nothing like it?

  • It sounds like it somewhat yes. I think if you got better I could really tell ya but! lol ;-)

  • I know that when I have someone that really knows what they're doing have a go at it that it then has a really nice sound to it..

  • ya this is not a marching mellophone. those look like big trumpets.

  • I forgot to tell you - this is not a marching mellophone which is a straight instrument, but a mellophone, in it's original shape. The marching mellophone came out in the late 1950's.

  • Maybe...

  • The smallest, whatever it is, but I believe that it might be able to play also in F. Most mellophones can play in F and be a substitute for the french horn.

  • On this one the smallest loop does E-Flat and then there's two bigger ones and one straight one which would be smaller in length then the smallest loop if it were straightened out. Does that sound right? Might then that straight one be the F?

  • Cool.. I'd love to play some of the old Star Wars scores on french horn.. That would be fun.

  • (cont.) The tuning slides of the three valves should be all of the way in to play it in "F", and they should be almost drawn out in "D". The insides of the tuning slides may have markings on them. Now you know what they mean. Good Luck.

  • Thanks for the info.. Which one makes it sound like or close to a french horn? The smallest loop is supposedly an E-Flat.

  • It is not an alto horn, it is a mellophone. It looks and sounds as if it is in "E". If you have another lead pipe (where the mouthpiece fits into) which is straight (without the loop), it will become an "F" mellophone. If you put one of the longer curves in the middle section it should change to "Eb" or "D", depending on which lead pipe you use.

  • Thanks.. I can get it going fairly well at times but then starting up I seem to mess it up at first. Am wanting to be able to pick it up and straight away do the scale flawlessly, when I can do that then I'll start memorizing notes.

  • keep trying:-) you can make it

  • Thanks..
