A 480 vs a 5970? I own a 5870 2gb and it can outperform a 480 most of the time(but not always). The tessellation is the only thing that gets it, and that will change soon, once the legal crap gets out of the way. Most bang for your buck is definitely ATI
For now only i love Nvidia because of their new Gtx 560 and above using the new FERMI Tessellation engine to make those Tessellation while sacrificing less FPS then Ati. I'm waiting for the new Ati 7000 to be release on 2012 and compare Ati 7000 (Graphics Core Next Gen (GCNG) architecture) with Nvidia gtx 600 (Kepler architecture).
@arautbr almost everything you said is not true. the only real pro for nvidia users now adays is that their cards run quieter. ill stick to radeon to support a more ethical company and for the far superior anti aliasing options.
@arautbr - Actually it's pretty opposite... ATi/AMD have usually much lower power consumption and heat generation than nVidia's cards. There are no compatibility issues with Win 7, sometimes there are issues with new games though as they usually take their time with making support with new drivers (a bad thing). GTX 460 is a much faster and more expensive card than 5670 so that's why it seems that nVidia is that much better to you. If money is not a problem, nVidia is faster at the moment.
Also, these companies are always trying to one up the other. Nvidia leads today and ATI leads tomorrow, and Nvidia leads the day after and so on. Each having successes and failures under their belts. They are both good cards, Pick the one most compatible to your games and be done with it. I currently have 5 different Computers with 7 different operating systems and 5 different graphic card set ups. All of them look great and run like a dream.
The computer set up isn't the same. You tested the Nvidia card on a more powerful i7 960 and the ATI on a less powerful i7 920. The only way to truly compare test results is to have the cards tested on the same exact system like the professionals do. That way, the only variable is the graphic card.

my first opinion on this was 'ATI are the best' because my pc has an ATI hd radeon 5670. but after going on game debate and comparing Nvidia's GTX 470 against ATI's 5970 they said the gtx 470 is 15% more powerful, and after checking the prices the 470 is around £200 where-as the 5970 is over £400. i dont understand why you'd pay double the price for a less powerful card

@Jammydodger58 Where did you hear the GTX 470s are faster than the 5970s? The 5970 WAS the world's fastest card, until the 6990 came out. We'll see on March 24th whether or not the GTX 590 will be the world's fastest.

@shahrezansickander your talking about comparing a duel gpu graphics card vs a single gpu graphics card. The fastest single gpu card is the gtx 580. When the duel nvidia card comes out, Im sorry but with the tessellation and physx capabilities, the gtx 595 will blow everything away
@Nfinity4231 Nvidia can't make a retail card with 2 580's on it. Physx is practically redundant already, and it was never that good to begin with. ATI however WILL bring out a card with two 69xx cores, and it WILL blow everything away. Until NVidia take the crown again by a long margin, I will fail to be impressed with their hot noisy cards and stick with ATI. I don't have loyalty to either ATI or Nvidia, I just know whats worth it and whats not.

Go watch the world record Heaven benchmarks at PAX or any other competition. If you listened to The Doghouse Podcast or even PC Perspective, they all agree that nvidia is better but for the price they say ATI has better price points. In other words, if you can afford it, nvidia is better.
@Nfinity4231 I am not rich, and I work a lot of hours for a pretty average wage. With the odd exception such as the 6600GT or 9600GT, ATI have been way more value. They also have the fastest cards. Noise is also a factor for me. I don't want to break any overclock records, I play games I don't sit and benchmark all day :D

@iris030380 Haha this is sooo true, ATi HD6000 are out already, with much improved tesselation performance and EVEN LOWER power consumption and people still comment about the HD5000...not to mention that the HD5000 series were 1 year older tham the GTX400 series, that means that nvidia had 1 year ahead (this is a lot on the computer market) to research about DX11 effects and tesselation.

Either way the differences seem negligible....I must say though that Nvidia does better and less bloated drivers....while ATI has generally better image quality.....I still use Nvidia...as a blender user it is the best choice for openGL....just my experience though.

@uphill248 - 5970 has 1024MB (1GB) of VRAM per GPU. VRAM is not shared. It has two GPUs so 2x1GB of VRAM. But if that ''can you run it'' thing said that it is a 714.4MB card then they're simply lieing to you.

@juanga251 - For sure 5970 performs better than GTX 280 with any driver and ATi's AA quality is and always has been better than nVidia's (picture quality is the same).
i dont think ati is great,my ati hd mobil. 5470 runs 3dmark 06 at first graphic test only at 6 ~8 FPS but NVidia 8600 GT have 20~25 FPS at the graphic test. (I,m not Nvidia fanboy)
The 5470 is a low end card in it's series. That's why ati 4000 series cards can beat some 5000 series cards. The 8800 GT is supposed to be pretty high end in it's series.

I loved this. I had to return my 2 new 480s after only 4 days of use after they started causing crazy crashes and visual wierdness. Turned out they was heat corruption to the memory. They also heated up my PC so much they have taken my brand new Rampage III down with them (damaged the VREG). So thanks but never again. This was with a spare slot between them in a modified coolermaster stacker case. Dont get me started on the noise. They should be sold with waterblocks and some honesty.
Im not a fanboy, but right now, nvidia and intel are better. Nvidia has the best GPU and Intel the best CPU. AMD products are always behind in top performance (GPU and CPU). The only way to compete for AMD is in price performance. On the other side, the only problem of Fermi are the unabilitie to make a dual gpu card in 40nm, because each GPU are huge and power hungry. Intel Cpus are better too. Just like i have said, im neutral, and i have AMD and Intel. AMD needs a new K8 against intel.
@rcarkk Most analysts feel Nvidias future is very uncertain as most people predict more and more integration of CPU and GPU for combined processing. Nvidia are the only company competing in this space that have no license for processors. Given my experience with dual 480s I can honestly say I think they botched the development with a very hot power hungry card. Just to add insult to injury its not even the fastest card! Even more annoying performance of these hot cards drops alot with heat
@Makadonska27 Well, i know about X86 license. Don´t worry! Nvidia will handle the CPU GPU integration (Intel or IBM). As for heat issues, im wayting for 2 EVGA GTX 470s, so lets see what luck i have. I have a well ventilated Lian Li case (full tower). I like ATI too, but they need to increase the Tesselation performance (they were the first introducing it) wich wont happen in 69xx series. Maybe the analysts are right, but they can be wrong two. Look at the companies that nvidia have acquired!
@rcarkk The 470 is a better buy. nvidia have been spreading their development too wide in recent years and the 480 is the result. A lot of power and heat to deliver what is essentially the same result as a rival. They need to decide what market is important to them. If the 495 turns up and isnt hamstrung by cutting back individual chip performance it will be a nice surprise, but a year too late. ATi are already talking about another generation of cards by then. consumers need valid competition
@DenlilleT3ddy none of them suck, it all depends how much u get for price eg i get more then 2/3 perfomance of i7 980x in gaming with amd's 1055t (980x = £900, 1055t = £160) now tell me whats better? ok to ati i get about 20-30 more fps in gaming with 5970 then gtx 480 (gtx480 = 450, 5970 = 410). in rendering with video cards nvidias cuda cores help alot so therefor 480 deserves its price but still....it all depends what u get for wot u pay and wot you need.

@arvutihull what a shame. i've watched a few video games bench mark between these two cards seems like the ati 5970 beats the 480gtx in frame rates by a lot like the game crysis. However i do notice depth in colors in 480 gtx especially in racing games. Do you think it matters or make any major difference the FPS. btw you have my subscription if that matters

At the same point you in time from the same angle of look at the dragon the GTX 480 shows 45 FPS & ATI 5970 shows 35 FPS, also when you turn all the triangles on the GTX 480 shows 36 FPS & ATI 5970 shows 15 FPS.
But also you might not have noticed that his procesor is a 960 and yours is 920 I think that matters aswell, even thow your core is clocked at 3780 Mhz his is only 3337 Mhz

@Nfinity4231 Nvidia can't make a retail card with 2 580's on it. Physx is practically redundant already, and it was never that good to begin with. ATI however WILL bring out a card with two 69xx cores, and it WILL blow everything away. Until NVidia take the crown again by a long margin, I will fail to be impressed with their hot noisy cards and stick with ATI. I don't have loyalty to either ATI or Nvidia, I just know whats worth it and whats not.

Go watch the world record Heaven benchmarks at PAX or any other competition. If you listened to The Doghouse Podcast or even PC Perspective, they all agree that nvidia is better but for the price they say ATI has better price points. In other words, if you can afford it, nvidia is better.

@Nfinity4231 I am not rich, and I work a lot of hours for a pretty average wage. With the odd exception such as the 6600GT or 9600GT, ATI have been way more value. They also have the fastest cards. Noise is also a factor for me. I don't want to break any overclock records, I play games I don't sit and benchmark all day :D

The last time NVidia were leading the race was in the times of the Geforce 79xx series and (briefly) with the Geforce 88xx series. Since then they have been playing catchup. And will continue to do so for most of this year - FACT. People are comparing nVidias newest hardware with 16 month old ATI and saying - LOOK NVIDIA IS BETTER! ...

@iris030380 Haha this is sooo true, ATi HD6000 are out already, with much improved tesselation performance and EVEN LOWER power consumption and people still comment about the HD5000...not to mention that the HD5000 series were 1 year older tham the GTX400 series, that means that nvidia had 1 year ahead (this is a lot on the computer market) to research about DX11 effects and tesselation.
Anyone here remember about Nvidia FX series? The DX9 cards that does not handled DX9?

Either way the differences seem negligible....I must say though that Nvidia does better and less bloated drivers....while ATI has generally better image quality.....I still use Nvidia...as a blender user it is the best choice for openGL....just my experience though.

@uphill248 - 5970 has 1024MB (1GB) of VRAM per GPU. VRAM is not shared. It has two GPUs so 2x1GB of VRAM. But if that ''can you run it'' thing said that it is a 714.4MB card then they're simply lieing to you.

I had to sell my 5970 because the ati drivers is socks I install my old GTX 280 it perform better quality and frames than ATi's card atis is good cards but drivers bad very bad keep guys with your nvidia cards!

i dont think ati is great,my ati hd mobil. 5470 runs 3dmark 06 at first graphic test only at 6 ~8 FPS but NVidia 8600 GT have 20~25 FPS at the graphic test. (I,m not Nvidia fanboy)

The 5470 is a low end card in it's series. That's why ati 4000 series cards can beat some 5000 series cards. The 8800 GT is supposed to be pretty high end in it's series.

Guys ! remember that fps not always is important ,if you want fps a lot ,than play on lowest :D , i mean by that ..... nVidia is going to performance , to great quality ,that's why games are on low fps , but you expected more fps because its some kinda GTX480 , the wuality is better in nVidia way , but ATI is going more on power or something like that , they need more fps , but have a bit lower quality . I loved this. I had to return my 2 new 480s after only 4 days of use after they started causing crazy crashes and visual wierdness. Turned out they was heat corruption to the memory. They also heated up my PC so much they have taken my brand new Rampage III down with them (damaged the VREG). So thanks but never again. This was with a spare slot between them in a modified coolermaster stacker case. Dont get me started on the noise. They should be sold with waterblocks and some honesty.

Im not a fanboy, but right now, nvidia and intel are better. Nvidia has the best GPU and Intel the best CPU. AMD products are always behind in top performance (GPU and CPU). The only way to compete for AMD is in price performance. On the other side, the only problem of Fermi are the unabilitie to make a dual gpu card in 40nm, because each GPU are huge and power hungry. Intel Cpus are better too. Just like i have said, im neutral, and i have AMD and Intel. AMD needs a new K8 against intel.

@rcarkk Most analysts feel Nvidias future is very uncertain as most people predict more and more integration of CPU and GPU for combined processing. Nvidia are the only company competing in this space that have no license for processors. Given my experience with dual 480s I can honestly say I think they botched the development with a very hot power hungry card. Just to add insult to injury its not even the fastest card! Even more annoying performance of these hot cards drops alot with heat

@Makadonska27 Well, i know about X86 license. Don´t worry! Nvidia will handle the CPU GPU integration (Intel or IBM). As for heat issues, im wayting for 2 EVGA GTX 470s, so lets see what luck i have. I have a well ventilated Lian Li case (full tower). I like ATI too, but they need to increase the Tesselation performance (they were the first introducing it) wich wont happen in 69xx series. Maybe the analysts are right, but they can be wrong two. Look at the companies that nvidia have acquired!

@rcarkk The 470 is a better buy. nvidia have been spreading their development too wide in recent years and the 480 is the result. A lot of power and heat to deliver what is essentially the same result as a rival. They need to decide what market is important to them. If the 495 turns up and isnt hamstrung by cutting back individual chip performance it will be a nice surprise, but a year too late. ATi are already talking about another generation of cards by then. consumers need valid competition

Gtx 480 doesnt go under 27 frames ati 5970 goes as low as 18

@DenlilleT3ddy none of them suck, it all depends how much u get for price eg i get more then 2/3 perfomance of i7 980x in gaming with amd's 1055t (980x = £900, 1055t = £160) now tell me whats better? ok to ati i get about 20-30 more fps in gaming with 5970 then gtx 480 (gtx480 = 450, 5970 = 410). in rendering with video cards nvidias cuda cores help alot so therefor 480 deserves its price but still....it all depends what u get for wot u pay and wot you need.

This video was done before the release of GTX 480 so it isn't the best thing to choose the cards by anymore.

@arvutihull what a shame. i've watched a few video games bench mark between these two cards seems like the ati 5970 beats the 480gtx in frame rates by a lot like the game crysis. However i do notice depth in colors in 480 gtx especially in racing games. Do you think it matters or make any major difference the FPS. btw you have my subscription if that matters

At the same point you in time from the same angle of look at the dragon the GTX 480 shows 45 FPS & ATI 5970 shows 35 FPS, also when you turn all the triangles on the GTX 480 shows 36 FPS & ATI 5970 shows 15 FPS.
But also you might not have noticed that his procesor is a 960 and yours is 920 I think that matters aswell, even thow your core is clocked at 3780 Mhz his is only 3337 Mhz
