@MrSkullxd It should be on your original box where you bought it a manual o in the hard drive, instructions saying where to put jumper to put it as slave or master...
what if, 1. theres one ide controller 2. im connecting an optical drive with a hard drive 3. the optical drive is gonna b on top 4.the hard drive is gonna b set to master drive,
i dont see this happening unless i set the hard drive to slave. i do want to install windows on this hard drive. will this still work? if set to slave?
is it dangerous ti instal a hardrive myself? on the pc inside, i took it out of my old pc my 20gb drive and im planing to put it on my new pc is it dangerous can it like burn it?
by the way, why slave? does that means is an extra one? cus i took my old hard disc from my xp pc, andim going to install it to my windows vista pc
I want to connect my ide but i dont want to use it as a master it has an operating system on it and i just want to wipe it out but i dnt want my windows 7 2011 rig to get corrupt when i plug it in as a slave?
but if i have a new computer with newer motherboard and psu i have only one IDE port on motherboard and 6 sata i want to keep my Samsung as primary and want to put my other ide hdd in as secondary will it work?
@YamaKazoo No actually I build computers, I am always upgrading things in it, but tbh the reason why I have had to open up my main is because the power supply atx cpu connector got damaged during a psu stress test. ( I am assuming that is when it happened) so the female connector pins are loose and have to be refitted alot.. No matter I have a new corsair PSU on the way...
@YamaKazoo I know how to keep static shock out of a case, you think I just started doing this shit yesterday? These static wrists are over cautious. You can simply grab a hold of a metal part of the case with one hand and ground yourself that should get any static you have on you off before you mess around with the parts in your computer.
@Crystalballer274 i know you can hold the case. but so many people ive seen think like you, that there is no bother and dont worry about it only to see them in a few weeks wondering why their graphics card is running games with only 3 colours or they're having random system crashes. I didnt use one building my own computer, but i was extra careful. Static is a major problem when building electronics, you cant be over cautious.
Idk if u still respond to comments but here goes nothing.... I recently lost my MOBO of a old pc and I need to try and extract some files from the HDD. I got a diferent computer hook the Hdd how it was shown in the video. But after it starts windows jumps into Startup Recovery mode and spends hours there doing nothing... I got scare for a sec and took out the new Hdd and now the PC works normally...what could be going on wrong?
Um, what if you dont have a jumper? All i have are the pins with absolutely nothing connecting them to eachother. If im going to setup my HDD as a permanant Master could i just soder them together???
Thanks, i'll be intalling my old pc HDD in no time.... it was a close call when installing my new/old pc HDD..... I almost broke my f***ing graphics card NO LOL!
Hi, I just installed a hdd on my desktop, the pc recongnize the hard drive but it not show on computer property or reading the new memory size. What can i do?
@xXxDiukexXx dude also i wanna ask i dun have two ide slots on my mobo . i have one ide slot in which my hdd is primarily connected . and my dvd rom is connected as a secondary device. so i was thinking can i connect a new hdd in place of dvd rom [as a slave hdd] and then tranfer all files from primary hdd to it and then make my new hdd as primary and and reconnect my dvd rom as secondary device. i wanna tranfer all my new files to my new hdd and this method seems good . wat do you think?
is there any problems with having a SATA as well as an IDE drive in your computer? my computer came with a SATA one and i have an IDE one and i was wondering if it will stuff up my system in any way
@TimTheTallMan1....I was just about to ask the same thing..I have both connections on my MB, and want to use the ide as a slave to the sata...I believe all you have to do is have the SATA at the #1 spot, and change to the slave connector on your ide ribbon, jumper set to slave on the ide drive. Ide connector to slave input on the MB.....Mabye some bios swapping too...IDK somebody correct me.
@31jda hey i was planning to buy a new 320 gb ide harddrive. i am having an 80 gb hardrive which i m using currently. so i wanna ask if i connect a new hdd to my system then how its gonna look. i mean does it automatically increases the space i mean when i log on the computer i will see increased memories or i will see another hdd options? thanks .
@discobubbles to your first question no hehe, let me explain, if you go to My computer you will see you have a disk unit (maybe called C) that is 80 gb, if you install a hdd you will have another letter (maybe D) that will have 320gb, so you will have 2 for example C and D.
to your second question, you can only have 2 devices connected to 1 IDE slot (one master and one slave), so yes, you can make what you say.....
@xXxDiukexXx thanks for the info mate . now i know :D . yeah i know PCI IDE extension cards. they can be connected to the pci card slots and serve as an additional ide slot. i was just asking cuz i only wanted to copy my all files to my master hdd [old one] to new hdd . thanks again mate for replying and helping :D

THANKS FOR THE VIDEO NOW I GOT AN IDEA HOW TO SET UP THE MISS PART OF THE SECOND HD, I ADAPTER A SATA INTO A IDE MOTHER BOARD USING THE ADAPTORS I'LL SEE IF I CAN GET IT RIGHT & THANKS
how to fix my computer? i need to reformat. i inserted already my O/S xp and set-up bios but when i start up it wont configure my O/S xp. Before it works but i wonder why? it wont work now..please help...
Are all pcs with Vista running SATA's? If so, do you have a video on how to add an additional harddrive (IDE) to a computer running with an existing SATA. Talking about adding the IDE to a HP Pavillion Slimeline...
I try to do this, but I on my mother board the ATA IDE cable has only two plugs only- 1.- Goes to my Main Hard Drive and 2.- goes to my DVD/CD Burner so I don't have an extra Plug what to I do ? (my Motherboard has only "Blue" Plug- do they make a ATA IDE "double insert" ?
Because you need to connect your DVD/CD Burner apart with another cable on the secondary controller of your motherboard. Then you can connect your second HD. The dude on the video explained it clearly @ 5:25
Another thing is to ensure you wear a wrist band to absorb static electricity or an alternative will be to touch the metal case to empty eliminate any static electricity from your body. Bear in mind to not to forget to turn off the power.
Jeez, I can't seem to get the Master drive to work (I unhooked all that stuff thinking there was a problem but it was really the video card). Then again my computer has like 3 IDE slots and none are labeled as master/slave. On top of which there are so many 4 pin connectors IDK which ones are supposed to connect to the harddrive :P
to add a second HDD to your computer carefully remove the screws then remove from the device then carefully install your second HDD and your first HDD and there you have it
I brought an 80gb second hard drive but my computer had a 40gb sata hard drive and the 80gb i got was ide so i replaced my cd drive with the hard drive and on the data cable it has the symbol of a cd so will anything happen wrong, right now im formatting the drive.
Question: My hd is a slave device (has no jumpers). I want to install a second hd; do I have to get a jumper and make one of my hd's a master device, or can both be slave devices?
By the way, is there a difference in being a slave device or a master device?
My bad.. that is what I meant, PRIMARY/MASTER for the OS HDD... I am sorry, I was talking to a hundred different people and thinking about 100 different things more.. Yes, your Master HDD should be the one with the OS on it. The newer one, or the one with nothing on it, goes as a slave. You can take a HDD with a OS on it and make it a slave to your main OS HDD and still be able to access the files without complications. Once again, so my mistake on the last answer.
One last question. Are the jumpers universal? Can I buy 2 at a computer store and apply them so them to make my current HDD my master and my new one my slave? Or does each HDD have specific jumpers?
Pretty sure they are universal. I sometimes take some jumpers from my old ( and I mean OLD as in 1gb HDD =\ ) and use them on my newer ones ( they got a bit more "meat" on them .. they are usually 750gb [ 1tb+ doesn't come in IDE yet from what I've seen so my 1tb+ are usually SATAs] ) and they seem to work just fine.
I put in a second ram stick, hard drive, and cd drive. I had no experience or knowlege with internal components whatsoever and im 12 and i did this with no help or experience. Damn i love emachines.
hey , i understand your instruction, but i need to know , if i Install a Second IDE Hard Drive, did my local disk drive will appear a new local E or other local disk in my computer
nice i still confused how to do it lol. i have a 500gb harddrive in there and i wanna install a 1.5 tb for alot of music and photos and things in my 500 gb one. i have a M3A78 Motherboard i think it has more cables and things but i think i gotta put them in and i got no clue how to do that
Where did he connect the secondary cable/ribbon? i mean, i know one end he connected it to the slave drive, but my computer only has a primary and a secondary controllers. the primary is being used by my hard drive and the secondary is used by the cd-rw drive. where did he connected the other end of the ribbon connected to the slave drive?
help please how can i use my slave hard drive as master i don't have a xp disc so the question is can i transfer xp into the slave hard drive? show me how? thanks
Thanks for the help on install. I am still having a problem. The drive is seen in BIOS, but not when I start windows. *NOTE* I installed on pc still running WIN ME. Is the problem the ancient operating system? I wanted test on old pc b4 moving to pc with xp.
I have a sata in my computer and i want to hook up an IDE from an older computer, i looked that the cables r different on the sata so how do i connect IDE as a slave?
You add the IDE drive to an IDE channel, not to the SATA connection. SATA does not have Slave/Master. THey only allow one device per SATA connector. You do not chain SATA devices.
i installed a second hard drive. after i powered the computer up. i had no video,an my usb ports don't work either. whats up with that?

Slaving a hard drive allows you to access files from an old hard drive that might otherwise be lost.

Question: My hd is a slave device (has no jumpers). I want to install a second hd; do I have to get a jumper and make one of my hd's a master device, or can both be slave devices?
By the way, is there a difference in being a slave device or a master device?
Thanks.

Hm? But shouldn't the one I have now (with the OS) be the main device and the new hd the slave one?
otakughost 2 years ago 2
My bad.. that is what I meant, PRIMARY/MASTER for the OS HDD...

Thanks dude, it was really helpful.
One last question. Are the jumpers universal? Can I buy 2 at a computer store and apply them so them to make my current HDD my master and my new one my slave? Or does each HDD have specific jumpers?
otakughost 2 years ago
Pretty sure they are universal. I sometimes take some jumpers from my old ( and I mean OLD as in 1gb HDD =\ ) and use them on my newer ones ( they got a bit more "meat" on them .. they are usually 750gb [ 1tb+ doesn't come in IDE yet from what I've seen so my 1tb+ are usually SATAs] ) and they seem to work just fine.

SATAs FTW man :)

Couldn't have been more knowledgeable or helpful, you explained this very well.
Also the second HDD that I am installing is a Western Digital WD1200, your's is a WD200, its like you made this video for me.
Thanks for the upload!

Where do you get the "Jumpers"?
ArnoldHC 2 years ago
two questions..
1) is a slave device your second hard drive?
2) Im running vista and i have an old IDE hard drive from my dads old server and ive lost the drivers. Does Vista automaticly install it ?
recordmasta001 2 years ago
1.) On a single IDE cable you can connect 2 hard or disk drives, you will have to set one drive as a Master and one as a Slave.
So basically, yes, a Slave drive is in some sence a second drive.
2.) Of course it will! There is almost no hard drive that Windows won't recognise, you don't need the original drivers.

Thanks for the help on install. I am still having a problem. The drive is seen in BIOS, but not when I start windows. *NOTE* I installed on pc still running WIN ME. Is the problem the ancient operating system? I wanted test on old pc b4 moving to pc with xp.
Thanks again...

I have a sata in my computer and i want to hook up an IDE from an older computer, i looked that the cables r different on the sata so how do i connect IDE as a slave?
ExKon3 3 years ago
You add the IDE drive to an IDE channel, not to the SATA connection. SATA does not have Slave/Master. THey only allow one device per SATA connector. You do not chain SATA devices.
