  • i installed a second hard drive. after i powered the computer up. i had no video,an my usb ports don't work either. whats up with that?

  • That was truly helpful, many thanks.

  • where do i put the jumper for a slave hard drive?

  • @MrSkullxd It should be on your original box where you bought it a manual o in the hard drive, instructions saying where to put jumper to put it as slave or master...

  • What a loud computer.

  • latex gloves make grate antistatic protection

  • What is the cable select feature for? My main harddrive is set like that? weird...

  • what if, 1. theres one ide controller 2. im connecting an optical drive with a hard drive 3. the optical drive is gonna b on top 4.the hard drive is gonna b set to master drive,

i dont see this happening unless i set the hard drive to slave. i do want to install windows on this hard drive. will this still work? if set to slave?

  • i think my old hdd is going bad, can i put in another new hdd and install a OS in case my old one doesnt work anymore but not as a slave?

  • Thumbs Up, if you find this video useful in 2011.

  • @gcasey2010 I FOUND IT USEFUL IN 2012 OH GOD WHAT DO I DO

  • @adsdfadfs maybe press the caps so you don't look retarded.

  • great video tnx

  • excellent video very informative on how to do this

  • is it dangerous ti instal a hardrive myself? on the pc inside, i took it out of my old pc my 20gb drive and im planing to put it on my new pc is it dangerous can it like burn it?

by the way, why slave? does that means is an extra one? cus i took my old hard disc from my xp pc, andim going to install it to my windows vista pc

  • hi can i post your you tube videos on my website i own a computer repair business called "Computer Pros Pro Users Pro Fixers"

  • @TheBat2741 no make your own

  • I want to connect my ide but i dont want to use it as a master it has an operating system on it and i just want to wipe it out but i dnt want my windows 7 2011 rig to get corrupt when i plug it in as a slave?

  • is it ok if im going to install an ide HDD in a motherboard with sata ports?

  • lol

  • is it okay to separate the 2 HDD and set them both as masters? and set the ODD as primary slave.?

  • but if i have a new computer with newer motherboard and psu i have only one IDE port on motherboard and 6 sata i want to keep my Samsung as primary and want to put my other ide hdd in as secondary will it work?

  • sweet

  • A bit redundant but good vid

  • Great video for sure. I have a second drive in the mail and plan on doing this.

  • great!!!!! unfortunately i still use IDE on my computer.... even this is 2011 already.. :)

  • @peterFans is it any slower because of this?

  • great tutorial

  • hai this is do ud vedio see must

  • lmao i never use this anti static shit and never have a problem with my computer and i open it up almost every day for some reason or another...

  • @Crystalballer274 mabye thats why you have to "open it up almost every day for some reason or another" derp

  • @YamaKazoo No actually I build computers, I am always upgrading things in it, but tbh the reason why I have had to open up my main is because the power supply atx cpu connector got damaged during a psu stress test. ( I am assuming that is when it happened) so the female connector pins are loose and have to be refitted alot.. No matter I have a new corsair PSU on the way...

  • @YamaKazoo I know how to keep static shock out of a case, you think I just started doing this shit yesterday? These static wrists are over cautious. You can simply grab a hold of a metal part of the case with one hand and ground yourself that should get any static you have on you off before you mess around with the parts in your computer.

  • @Crystalballer274 i know you can hold the case. but so many people ive seen think like you, that there is no bother and dont worry about it only to see them in a few weeks wondering why their graphics card is running games with only 3 colours or they're having random system crashes. I didnt use one building my own computer, but i was extra careful. Static is a major problem when building electronics, you cant be over cautious.

  • Idk if u still respond to comments but here goes nothing.... I recently lost my MOBO of a old pc and I need to try and extract some files from the HDD. I got a diferent computer hook the Hdd how it was shown in the video. But after it starts windows jumps into Startup Recovery mode and spends hours there doing nothing... I got scare for a sec and took out the new Hdd and now the PC works normally...what could be going on wrong?

  • Thanks for your wonderful video!

  • thanks man great tutorial really helped me out

  • @xXxDIUKExXx

Lol yeh but im lazy and have a ton of soder layin around ;D

  • Um, what if you dont have a jumper? All i have are the pins with absolutely nothing connecting them to eachother. If im going to setup my HDD as a permanant Master could i just soder them together???

  • @incinerator4995 lol I dont recomend you to do so.... idk maybe it works, but man, jumpers are cheap ;3

  • Thanks, i'll be intalling my old pc HDD in no time.... it was a close call when installing my new/old pc HDD..... I almost broke my f***ing graphics card NO LOL!

  • Hi, I just installed a hdd on my desktop, the pc recongnize the hard drive but it not show on computer property or reading the new memory size. What can i do?

  • @cruzmarga30 it appears under, My computer? if not something is bad, tell me how you connected it, and how you setted the jumper ;3

  • @xXxDiukexXx dude also i wanna ask i dun have two ide slots on my mobo . i have one ide slot in which my hdd is primarily connected . and my dvd rom is connected as a secondary device. so i was thinking can i connect a new hdd in place of dvd rom [as a slave hdd] and then tranfer all files from primary hdd to it and then make my new hdd as primary and and reconnect my dvd rom as secondary device. i wanna tranfer all my new files to my new hdd and this method seems good . wat do you think?

  • @discobubbles but there is other solution, you can get a PCI IDE, this is like an extension card (google PCI IDE so you see what Im talking about ;))

but it have a IDE slot, so you should be able to connect all your devices with that,

but I would suggest you keep the hdd that have the Operating System in the principal IDE slot and ofcourse, as master

  • hey, you can show me how to install a new hard drive on motherboard g31m-s2c

  • is there any problems with having a SATA as well as an IDE drive in your computer? my computer came with a SATA one and i have an IDE one and i was wondering if it will stuff up my system in any way

  • @TimTheTallMan1....I was just about to ask the same thing..I have both connections on my MB, and want to use the ide as a slave to the sata...I believe all you have to do is have the SATA at the #1 spot, and change to the slave connector on your ide ribbon, jumper set to slave on the ide drive. Ide connector to slave input on the MB.....Mabye some bios swapping too...IDK somebody correct me.

  • @31jda hey i was planning to buy a new 320 gb ide harddrive. i am having an 80 gb hardrive which i m using currently. so i wanna ask if i connect a new hdd to my system then how its gonna look. i mean does it automatically increases the space i mean when i log on the computer i will see increased memories or i will see another hdd options? thanks .

  • @discobubbles you will have a new unit like D, C, A, etc...

so in your case you will have 2 units, C with 80 gb, and D with 320gb, ofcourse the names can change,

  • @xXxDiukexXx hmm. one more thing is it gonna look like folders C, D ,E ,F for 80 gb

and again separate four folders C, D ,E ,F for 312 gb hdd?

  • @discobubbles to your first question no hehe, let me explain, if you go to My computer you will see you have a disk unit (maybe called C) that is 80 gb, if you install a hdd you will have another letter (maybe D) that will have 320gb, so you will have 2 for example C and D.

to your second question, you can only have 2 devices connected to 1 IDE slot (one master and one slave), so yes, you can make what you say.....

  • @xXxDiukexXx thanks for the info mate . now i know :D . yeah i know PCI IDE extension cards. they can be connected to the pci card slots and serve as an additional ide slot. i was just asking cuz i only wanted to copy my all files to my master hdd [old one] to new hdd . thanks again mate for replying and helping :D

  • @TimTheTallMan1 Same here, i have the same issue

  • my secondary HDD's legend say that SLAVE had no jumper. is it different for every hardrive?

  • Thank you u realy helped me i had no clue what i was doing thanks for your help

  • @Stgopena1212 what do you mean spam

  • @treymaster100

    TROLOLOL

  • Thank's

  • thank you

  • Thank you VERY VERY MUCH

i want to thank you very much for this video

  • excellent video..! Thanks

  • thanx a lott

my pc work's great with my new second hdd

  • @adriantjuuh

So how does it work or get picked up on ''my computer'' as? when you do it the slave way

  • I understand that this video is a bit old, but I have a question for you...Here it is: I installed my motherboard, checked everything over and over...when I go to turn it on it turns on, but nothing happens, nothing comes up on the monitor.

The fans are running etc etc. I checked the gfx card, went through all my cards, unplugged them then plugged them back in, same for the RAM. THe computer does not beep or anything.

If you are so inclined to help a brother our that would be great, thanks.

  • @MisterKirkby Have you tried unplugging the processor and then plugging it in again then booting up your system?

  • Thanks for this vid man!

  • Thanks so much for the video. I've never messed with the inside of a computer before, but your video showed me how easy it is. I installed a slave hard drive with no problems on my first try! :D

  • Thanks so much for the video. I've never messed with the inside of a computer before, but your video showed me how easy it is. I installed a slave hard drive with no problems on my first try! :D

  • i have a ide cable hard drive, and want to buy a sata hard drive,i have sata connections on my mb and at the moment i have ide plugged in..can i do this ?

  • Good video, but do you have to buy extra cable supporter cables to attach a slave HD. or is there spare ones in the motherboard?

  • helpful but the last few seconds why did you bother

  • pffft 60 gigs

  • THANKS FOR THE VIDEO NOW I GOT AN IDEA HOW TO SET UP THE MISS PART OF THE SECOND HD, I ADAPTER A SATA INTO A IDE MOTHER BOARD USING THE ADAPTORS I'LL SEE IF I CAN GET IT RIGHT & THANKS

  • Very informative, and well demostrated...

  • how to fix my computer? i need to reformat. i inserted already my O/S xp and set-up bios but when i start up it wont configure my O/S xp. Before it works but i wonder why? it wont work now..please help...

  • tanxz man very well explained i love it

  • if i hook up a second drive, can i access its data and recover it?

  • why would u need to partition and format in order to use?.........

  • I have got an IDE n a SATA drive how should i make the IDE one slave?

  • Are all pcs with Vista running SATA's? If so, do you have a video on how to add an additional harddrive (IDE) to a computer running with an existing SATA. Talking about adding the IDE to a HP Pavillion Slimeline...

  • how much the anti static wrist strap in the us today

  • thankz.......

  • I try to do this, but I on my mother board the ATA IDE cable has only two plugs only- 1.- Goes to my Main Hard Drive and 2.- goes to my DVD/CD Burner so I don't have an extra Plug what to I do ? (my Motherboard has only "Blue" Plug- do they make a ATA IDE "double insert" ?

  • @kevin26tx

Because you need to connect your DVD/CD Burner apart with another cable on the secondary controller of your motherboard. Then you can connect your second HD. The dude on the video explained it clearly @ 5:25

    optical drive = DVD/CD Burner

  • lol get a new computer

  • thankz a lot ................!!

  • Another thing is to ensure you wear a wrist band to absorb static electricity or an alternative will be to touch the metal case to empty eliminate any static electricity from your body. Bear in mind to not to forget to turn off the power.

  • Make sure when you insert a second hard drive to your computer everything MUST be turned off and do NOT overtighten the screws

  • Jeez, I can't seem to get the Master drive to work (I unhooked all that stuff thinking there was a problem but it was really the video card). Then again my computer has like 3 IDE slots and none are labeled as master/slave. On top of which there are so many 4 pin connectors IDK which ones are supposed to connect to the harddrive :P

  • @MAZZ0Murder lol try them all =]

  • thanks bro

  • to add a second HDD to your computer carefully remove the screws then remove from the device then carefully install your second HDD and your first HDD and there you have it

  • what do i do if my second HD doesnt have any jumpers to cover the pins ?

  • depends on the hard drive make but is normally slave

  • thanks alot i did the sucsessfully thakns to this vid XD

  • mine dont have that little white thingy :( so my hdd dont work?

  • thanka a lot

  • Glad you showed where to find the master/slave info when there isn't a legend on the hard drive sticker. Very informative video.

  • so i need another power cable connector?

  • thank you a lot, very helpful

  • thank you very clear pictures and sound.

  • I brought an 80gb second hard drive but my computer had a 40gb sata hard drive and the 80gb i got was ide so i replaced my cd drive with the hard drive and on the data cable it has the symbol of a cd so will anything happen wrong, right now im formatting the drive.

  • @X1Bit1X you need either both ide or both sata you cant mismatch the two

  • where can i get that little jumper thing?

  • do you have to format the drive?

  • Awesome video, you know your stuff

  • Is the IDE HDD the same as a SATA HDD?

  • no.!!!!!

  • @Legified yea but different cables ide uses ide cables and sata uses sata cables and ide is old and sata is new but no difference ive seen

  • umm yeah, a lil to reply... got a laptop now xDDD

  • very helpfull video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is EIDE the same as IDE? If it isn't, then what is the difference???

  • what is EIDE :S i only heard of IDE or Pata that means the same

  • is that computer compaq evo? i have one and it looks exactly like main

  • whats the benefit of slaving a hard drive

  • @milieubluez

Slaving a hard drive allows you to access files from an old hard drive that might otherwise be lost.

  • more space since it doesnt need to have the computer's OS on it

  • extra storage....

  • its like raid... i guess

  • um in the last part of the videos wen the screen is on how what r the steps to check for the second hard-drive ?

  • Question: My hd is a slave device (has no jumpers). I want to install a second hd; do I have to get a jumper and make one of my hd's a master device, or can both be slave devices?

By the way, is there a difference in being a slave device or a master device?

    Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • Hm? But shouldn't the one I have now (with the OS) be the main device and the new hd the slave one?

  • My bad.. that is what I meant, PRIMARY/MASTER for the OS HDD... I am sorry, I was talking to a hundred different people and thinking about 100 different things more.. Yes, your Master HDD should be the one with the OS on it. The newer one, or the one with nothing on it, goes as a slave. You can take a HDD with a OS on it and make it a slave to your main OS HDD and still be able to access the files without complications. Once again, so my mistake on the last answer.

  • Thanks dude, it was really helpful.

One last question. Are the jumpers universal? Can I buy 2 at a computer store and apply them so them to make my current HDD my master and my new one my slave? Or does each HDD have specific jumpers?

  • Pretty sure they are universal. I sometimes take some jumpers from my old ( and I mean OLD as in 1gb HDD =\ ) and use them on my newer ones ( they got a bit more "meat" on them .. they are usually 750gb [ 1tb+ doesn't come in IDE yet from what I've seen so my 1tb+ are usually SATAs] ) and they seem to work just fine.

  • SATAs FTW man :)

  • Couldn't have been more knowledgeable or helpful, you explained this very well.

Also the second HDD that I am installing is a Western Digital WD1200, your's is a WD200, its like you made this video for me.

    Thanks for the upload!

  • Where do you get the "Jumpers"?

  • two questions..

    1) is a slave device your second hard drive?

    2) Im running vista and i have an old IDE hard drive from my dads old server and ive lost the drivers. Does Vista automaticly install it ?

  • 1.) On a single IDE cable you can connect 2 hard or disk drives, you will have to set one drive as a Master and one as a Slave.

So basically, yes, a Slave drive is in some sence a second drive.

2.) Of course it will! There is almost no hard drive that Windows won't recognise, you don't need the original drivers.

  • thanks ;]

  • i did it and with my computer is was easy as hell i used... a screwdriver

  • yep, i just finis install mine... so it did... ths ...

  • I put in a second ram stick, hard drive, and cd drive. I had no experience or knowlege with internal components whatsoever and im 12 and i did this with no help or experience. Damn i love emachines.

  • best way to learn is to get the info and get in there. just like overclocking

  • thx

  • amazing

  • hey , i understand your instruction, but i need to know , if i Install a Second IDE Hard Drive, did my local disk drive will appear a new local E or other local disk in my computer

  • Thank you so kindly.

  • wow thanks tech skills now i know the problem of my hard drive :]

  • umm i got a question i only have one IDE slot how do i get more?

  • new mother board or new ribbon cable i think

  • Thanks for the help

  • where does he connects the other end of the ribbon connected to the slave drive?

  • Where did he connect the secondary cable/ribbon? i mean, i know one end he connected it to the slave drive, but my computer only has a primary and a secondary controllers. the primary is being used by my hard drive and the secondary is used by the cd-rw drive. where did he connected the other end of the ribbon connected to the slave drive?

  • he had a mutli ribbon cable

  • Why would it be static? theres no cord in it..

  • can i switch the primary hard drive to the center and my slave hard drive is in the end of the cable

  • hi this video was much help and i will subscribe

  • help please how can i use my slave hard drive as master i don't have a xp disc so the question is can i transfer xp into the slave hard drive? show me how? thanks

  • Thanks for the help on install. I am still having a problem. The drive is seen in BIOS, but not when I start windows. *NOTE* I installed on pc still running WIN ME. Is the problem the ancient operating system? I wanted test on old pc b4 moving to pc with xp.

    Thanks again...

  • what is the pause break key so i can look to see if my computer shows both Hard drives?

  • one of the most comprehensible tutorials i had ever watched.. thank you, you helped me so much

  • thank you it worked a treat for me

  • Thnx a ton works perfectly fine.

  • how u doin i followed ur steps but it saids its not responden i might be doing some thing wrong if u can help i would appreaciate it thanx

  • Thanks man u make a my day.

  • I have a sata in my computer and i want to hook up an IDE from an older computer, i looked that the cables r different on the sata so how do i connect IDE as a slave?

  • You add the IDE drive to an IDE channel, not to the SATA connection. SATA does not have Slave/Master. THey only allow one device per SATA connector. You do not chain SATA devices.
