bullshit! Peter Gabriel provides the much needed male perspective. Plus he chose this song for another duet with kate, because he felt that this song by Roy Harper captured his feelings perfectly at the time.(his wife had just fucked off) amazing song both the original and this version.
I love this. Not just because it is a fantastic song by Roy Harper but also because two great singer-musicians of the day created this amazing 'event' on TV. I feel that it has been overlooked by music critics somewhat. There are some serious postmodern qualities in the video that I can't see reference to when I've researched it, e.g. the staggered images (the stage space occupied by the two characters and then the video on the wall representing something else), for instance.
Nice to see 2 amazing singer songwriters doing this beautiful duet together we need more musicians like this now, not the rubbish that exists in the charts now.
That's a truly incredible duet indeed! I love Kate and I also love Peter! They both are artists that produce albums hard to be properly enjoyed by pop audience, specially on these days when pop music has become something like fast-food.
a beautiful and sad song...since yesterday I thought that my true love and I would break up after eleven years of affair.I listened to this song endlessly for 8 months and he listened to it as well. Then we realized we wished we had one of his/her children and decided to be together again...Thanks to a strong song, we remembered love.A little story, a little nothing for most...but for me it is very important....A special , true song...
I love this version as much as the original Harper version. Ifirst heard this version on ITV,Xmas 1979 .I had just split up with my girlfriend so I felt its impact, lovely to hear it again.Thank you
@foxynickers I so agree with this.Elizabeth and Kate singing this in unison would have sounded so much better and capture the real ethereal beauty of this song than having a male voice on it.
Theo were lovers and it shows. The Coil version might have been great if it had been recorded without all that reverb. I can barely hear Liz voice'. Kate has the ability to make you weep without warning. As for Peter... I mean seriously, Peter ? He's the master of telling a story.
@Westernprovince I also prefer this version. The strings plus reverb give it totally different character - a timelessness and a Baroque sort of meatiness.
Still absolutely stunning after all these years. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush singing Roy Harper. It really doesn't get any better. I too can't believe BBC4 haven't done the honours and made a programme about Roy.
Well, it is a crime not only against music but poetry. Those pathetic middle aged mags that come out banging on about dinosaur bands like Floyd etc. rarely mention him, though move often. You are right BBC4 you would think should get involved. His story is so brilliant and songs lend meaning to life. Maybe we should write in!
First time I've ever heard this song and the tears are streaming down my face. So sad and beautiful. Kate Bush is a divine goddess in human form. Love it...
The song is a very male song. I'm sorry but Roy sings it with real heart. I like this version but it never touches the sentiments of his version. I have seen Peter Gabriel and know how talented he is. Kate Bush is brilliant, though she thinks Roy is a genius.
I use an 'out-of-10' rating in my music collection - '9' is 'really excellent' and '10' is reserved solely for those tracks that make my hairs on my arms stand on end - Roy's version is a '10' but this is an '11'.
I cant get enough of this. Just love it. But what can you expect when you put two musical geniuses in a room together? Pete is so intense in this, both his voice and performance visually. Heart breaking stuff.
A truly beautiful song - I recently bought 'Flat baroque' for the original, but this version is totally perfect and, though it's 20 seconds shorter, it seems to be less rushed. Not an easy song to listen to without blubbing.
I saw this for the first time on the telelvision last night. Was not aware they even preformed this tune. I am most familiar with the This Mortal Coil version. That is sung beautifuly by Elizabeth Frazer.
Thanks so much for reminding me where I had heard this song before. I too watched this on BBC4 the other night. What a wonderful journey back in time it was. I was only 10 at the time, but a huge Kate fan, as I remain today. Unfortunately, the This Mortal Coil album this is on vanished along the way somewhere. Wonder if I can still get it?
The allbum is called "It'll end in tears" and is still available on Amazon at least. It also includes a stunning version of Tim Buckley's "Song to the siren" also sung by Elizabeth Frazer.
Thanks very much. I used to have it at one time and played it to death. Im very familiar with Song to The Siren and love it still. Im listening again to Peter and Kate and so glad to have caught it on TV the other night or else I may never have known of it. Its a real treasure.
I LOVE this version, tho its amazing that a song about a man disgusted by his past relationship with a desperate junkie who he once loved, becomes such a moving story of familiar alienation. I recommend people who like this, track down Roy Harper's original version from the album Flat Baroque and Berserk (or youtube it)
Oh My God! this is preety FAB U LESS never seen this before gabriel is so damn hot in this video, kate - as always - is awesome, and the song is pretty damn cool, shoulda been a single back in the day......
I now prefer this to the This mortal coil version. No I don't. Yes I do. No I don't....... Damn it! I can't make my mind up - Both are different, both are beautiful :-)

interesting to hear this... is it the original?
Sorry, but i still LOVE Liz singing this much more..
If it was'nt for Kate here, i think it would have been a complete disaster!
But then, how do you match such strong vocal talents as Elizabeth Fraser and Kate bush!.. maybe they should of done it as a duo :)

No, the original is by Roy Harper. He wrote it and released it in 1970 on his album "Flat Baroque And Berserk".

This is light-years better than the original, simply because it has Kate Bush in it, and Kate Bush turns everything she touches into heavenly gold.

Couldn't agree more.
I've been longing to hear this song again for about 20+ years, that line of regret "never had one of your children", incredible.
Could you imagine someone doing a "CHRISTMAS SPECIAL" of this content or magnitude these days???
Many thanks for posting this vid x x x

That is the talent Roy Harper. So, why has the BBC not ever sung his praises, neither of these two touch his brilliance.
