  • cher atfata..Je ne suce pas ni je mange le fourrage ensile..NOW fuck off or va te faire foutre salaud!!

  • Love seeing Maddie and the band live - I shall take my little granddaughter to see them soon. She loves to see Maddie's swirly skirts.

  • I'm glad to see that Maddy still has happy feet

  • good clip, love steeleye span, i thought that they executed it well!!

  • @ryonni123 she should be executed there is no greater crime than to let old fogies like maddy prior show everyone just how useless and now untalented due to old age and out of touch with reality she is

  • At the end you can see Peter Knight sweeping away smoldering sawdust and wire fragments...

  • Excellent!! nice improv on the original version.

  • @atfatw I might like to make a reply to you but assume you are far too stupid to understand words of more than one sillyybubble..I would like to say that you are Neanderthal but that just might seem to be a compliment to you..If you have an objective opinion on her singing ability, then make it - Just please do not make idiotic unintelligble statements..

  • @atfatw Well at least you can spell - apart from "he queen?" that is ..Anyway i am not english!! All my love & best wishes haha............

  • @danvers0549 you suck danvers eat silage!!!!!!!!

  • killer.

  • That was a face melting ending!

  • THAT FIDDLE IS ENOUGH TO TAKE YOU TO FAERIE

  • OMG MAKE IT STOP! WTF?

  • I was introduced to Steeleye Span when they opened for Jethro Tull / "A Passion Play" tour in Denver ('72, I think). Can't think of a more appropriate band to segue into the genius of Ian Anderson.

  • What a fine performance! Awesome.

I'm glad to see SS is still producing good folk music after so many years.

  • This song sounds nothing like The Rocky Road to Dublin.

  • @ShakaUVM

    yea.

    So what?

  • Maddy has lasting talent and personality - something that modern 'pop stars' sadly seem to lack...

  • What a lovely marriage between Ireland and Scotland How I love this****

  • @ludo281160 the tune is scottish written in 1715, the irish song Rocky Road took the song and changed the words in 1840s as it became a popular vauderville song. The song is scottish.

  • Lovely ... Love that fiddle :0)

  • I am- not admitting the English part- but, it's there, generations ago. And what happened on Culloden still makes me tear up. We were exiles, moving to the north of Holland, fled Scotland after the Hugenot persecution- then fled to the north of Ireland to escape again. That is how my family ended up in America! Or so goe the geneology records of the churches we fled. Good luck to you!

    Best to you-

  • Excellent version of this piece. Maddy's voice is better than ever. I also like when they go into the Tam Lin reel at the end of this.

  • "Steel" in wonderful shape!

  • I love the energy in this song but....I imagine horses galloping over the countryside......but what is it about?

  • @elephantbarbiegirl I think it's about George IV of England - about him and his dissolute life and is from a Jacobite point of view. Jacobites were supporters of James II and his descendants whom they regarded as the true Kings of England. James II was dethroned for being a Catholic King, but his descendants had support of the Scots. The Jacobite claim to the throne was eventually defeated and the Scottish Jacobites paid a terrible price. This song is in Scottish dialect.

  • @heliotropezzz333 - two kings. "Come over from France" was an appeal to Bonnie Prince Charlach, the pun about "Geordie´s whelps" was about the followers of a German on the English throne who had, in the eyes of Scots, no right to rule them.

  • @Pitfossil Thanks for the info. I was wrong about George IV. That was too late I think, and it would have been George I or II who was being referred to..

  • @heliotropezzz333 1745. In the BBC´s "Battlefield Britain" series there was a docu about Culloden that still makes me shudder all these years later - and I´m not even Scot or English.

  • @heliotropezzz333 thanks for this! I can hear the odd name and bits and pieces but it didn;t make much sense to me. Now I understand it better

  • @elephantbarbiegirl I've listened to a few versions on youtube and sadly nobody seems to articulate the words very clearly. The Corries version is probably the clearest on youtube. We used to have an album by the Johnstones, years ago, and it was a very clear version but it's not on youtube.

  • klippspringer, where's your version. Link would be appreciated.

  • Alright if you've never heard the original album version, otherwise thisdeserves a big raspberry!

  • Hello atfatw! Still infesting posts with your semi literate comments? You madly attractive fool you!

  • qwertyuiop....I'm speechless ty magic d:)

  • @nanettejtolbert they did tend to sing some of there songs faster at live concerts than on record

  • First thank you replying to what I had said and yes I to still love her voice, but at my age 57 when you hear something you had not listen to for a very long time is it faster or is it that age thing that my childen tell me I have. Steeleye span in a round about why help me get my PHD as they always gave a lotbof info on the LP which seems to not be on cds. (yes I do wear glasses)

  • Bravo Maddy legend - Welcome to Croatia.

  • @crorocker43 Hrvatska

  • is it me or had they made this faster their is something not right I know it live but its sounds like they are in a race with someone or somerthing, or may be its just me be a lot older from when I first hered this

  • Sadly, and I know it is going to be an unpopular comment, I have to agree with "at". The magic is gone. Maddy no longer has the angelic voice she had. it's been 40 years. Things change. Tim Hart (RIP) was at least 50% of the band. The counterpoint between Tim's gnarly baritone and Maddy's supersonic soprano was the foundation of the Steeleye Span sound.

"Cam Ye" is one of my favorite SS tracks, but not like this :(

  • I don't like how she's talking through some of the song. I preferred it when the lines were sung. It sort of destroys the immersion. I still love the song, but I preferred it when they sand it in earlier titles and records. Give them credit for trying to improve on a perfect formula. Plus, I really did not like the loud metal-esque ending. Very impressive playing, but did not sound good at all.

  • wow ! Immer wieder total Hammer

  • pooh, thats what i hoped not to hear. first somewhat interesting and yes, maddy is very ok, but then the whole thing turns into a poor jig instead of a heavy monstersound. this one was great in 73, a haunting tune which was one of my most played songs in the 70s and also 80s. some people who never heard of them became fans, when i played this tune in some sets. but the thrill is gone here. this tune needs electronics, not acoustics....sniff

  • why ami reading about a atfatw? Any way Maddy comes thru no matter the backing band.

  • Wow! She's the 40-year single malt in oak. Unbelievable -- and I've been away from this music since the 80s. More fool me!

  • @manthasagittarius she smells like it too

  • She sounds better than ever.

  • Great group. I especially love the sounds coming from the violin, they are so haunting. Thanks steeleyefan1, for sharing.

  • Maddy is pure class

  • really great and dynamic (tho I slightly miss the powerful sub-bass? long notes from the record).

  • Fantastic line up, this!

  • LOVE it.

  • These cats jam in ways I can't even imagine. Complete masters of their instruments and their music. And Maddy sings notes that don't even exist. This is big talent.

  • no one has strangled atfatw, cause only GOD knows what vile diseases you will acquire on your hands, so if you must strangle that no good subhuman atfatw, please use gloves!!!!!

  • @atfatw I strongly disagree -- I think she sounds (and looks) brilliant in this clip.

  • @atfatw

How has no-one strangled you yet you obnoxious little man?

  • @atfatw

Well, in that case it's even more of a miracle no one has strangled you.....

I'd be quite happy to remedy that oversight if required....

  • this is just great or better said : more than great ..

  • Disappointed not to have heard this on the recent tour but not to worry this video is brilliant

  • This voice is perfect. Nothing to compare with.

  • bickerandrue -- Glad to hear that. Saw them in concert once, at least 10 years ago but not more than 15.

  • It's Friday and I am thinking of how lucky you are!

  • Maddy as always carries the tune - poorly served by the band imho- ach i love ya still

  • Wonderful group and a wonderful lead singer. Hypnotic.

  • excellent!!

  • A few more pounds, a few more wrinkles - and still invincible.

  • Maddy only could sing this song. Love you Maddy.

  • Plz make a video of yourself singing and letz see it!

  • I love these guys, just bought my ticket for The Stables in MK on 1st December, GREAT !!!

  • Where´s the whisky, where´s my claimore - gralloch the redcoats! (Only joking, I´m not from Scotland)

  • Can anyone say when and where this gig was? Thanks in advance..

  • It is from the Pioneers of Folk Rock tour of 2004. Can't say which venue though but not Tunbridhe Wells (no cameras there).

  • Loved Steeleye since the mid seventies and think its wonderful that they sound so good today--- Maddy especially

  • Years ago as a young lad I saw Steeleye Span when they backed up Jethro Tull on one of their American jaunts. I believe it was the Passion Play tour. Anyway...when Span did this song it was at a much slower tempo with an almost haunting feel. Very cool. This exposure opened up the world of English, Irish, and Scottish folk music for me! (Thanks gang) For those interested check out the American group THE BALTIMORE CONSORT, speciffically recordings with the wonderful soprano Custer LaRue

  • Cool, I saw that concert too, mine was in Oakland California and it was the first time I ever saw Steeleye Span. I went out and bought all of their albums and have been a fan since. I love their stuff, the acoustic and electric evolution of the band! They are fantastic.

The go too fast in concert, maybe for those who are unfamiliar with their music. They are reallt great. Of course so it Tull!

  • Maddy looks better now than she did in the 1970s...and the song is awesome...

  • This sounds quite like the song "Bella Ciao"

  • I admit Im a Yank and have trouble sometimes with slang for the UK, but damn. lol what the hell is she singing? I like it never the less.

  • It's Scots dialect, you dumb schmuck!

  • I figured that, friend. I just couldnt understand it. Anyway a friend from Scotland sorted it out for me. I thank you for your help.

  • Basically it's about various titled people having sex with each other and people who work for them weaving with poor quality cloth. They say they're not too bothered as long as they get paid for it. Hope this helps a bit!

  • It's a Jacobite song making fun of the Hanoverian monarchy of England. King George II is "Geordie Whelps" from George the Guelph and "goosie" refers to one of his mistresses.

  • Comment removed

  • It was written to encourage the rebellion of 1715 against King George I.. several of the leaders of that rebellion are named (by their nicknames).

  • @s0ulrider: It must be hell for you at New Years Eve then trying to sing Auld Lang Syne, or perhaps you flog your anthem - again!

  • @s0ulrider: it's in Lowland Scots. It's more than just an accent, it's a dialect derived directly from Old English. I'm English and I can't understand it either, so you're not alone there.

  • @KateFan I'm a Scot and can understand what she says but this Steeleye Span version of Robert Burns song is really watered down quite a bit actually. The Corries sing it with more of the original lyrics :-)

  • Steeleye span for me our the best british folk band in the youth and even now!!!

  • bella kanzone.....

  • das hat was!! Einfach super!!!

  • They're still great, I think. What have you got against performers getting older? I'm sure they enjoy it, that's why they carry on.

  • Not at all - I just saw her on Electric Proms, she was as brilliant as ever....and why should she not get old...we all will

  • GrannySea, Jack Lalanne at 94 years old almost a century is still as young and strong as he was when he was 30. we all age of course but we need not get old. which means to be of great age and all worn out and basically no good anymore.

  • Time to carry on.

  • Hell yeah!
