I've been listening to this song for 40 years and I'm still not tired of it. To my ear it is the perfect voice singing the perfect song. I feel like I'm right there in the boxcar in the rain with him. Thank you for making it available.
I heard this one so long ago, on a rainy night during my drive from work. It has always stuck with me, and I still listen to it during rainy nights. Love this one, and Clarence Carter's Patches (and Slip Away). They don't make songs like this anymore.
Brings tears to my eyes.., those old memories flash..., heart aches.., out of work, down and out on the road of life but somehow made it. No body seemed to care at the time, but then ....there is that one often missed little nod from the Big Man himself, an angel sent by God to rescue me. Oh my Lord, bless this woman who has stuck by me for 42 years...and please... Bless Brook Benton, no body brings out those feelings like he did.
I've never been in Georgia....most likely I'll never be in Georgia...much less in a rainy night...and i can't help thinking what tony Joe white must have felt when he wrote this song...loneliness...sadness....a need for a warm place...whatever the case, brook Benton with his silky voice, as he sings this song, can make one feel all those things that tony Joe must've felt..in a lonely rainy night in Georgia.
By far one of my most favorite songs. This is probably the best version being the origional but I also enjoy watching the 1982 on stage video. I have loved this man and his music from back in the late 50's with my next favorite of his "Endlessly". It's Just a Matter of Time" and "Think Twice" One of his Greatest Hits Albums was mostly old standards. Brook is just great in my eyes and ears.
Thanks for posting! This is my favorite version of the song. I think Brook really hits an emotional vulnerability that the other versions simply don't have.
yes this is the best version I've found so far, but there's another one that I can't find :(((, they used to play it on the radio when I was in cyprus and since then I just don't like the others
YES! I like because it is the one that was on the radio... Not the 'live' version, or 1982, or so and so doing a 'cover' of this song... The original is still greatest! Thanks for putting it on here. When it rains here in Georgia, I frequently put this on and stand at the window and let Mother Nature speak to me through Mr. Brook Benton! I appreciate your putting this on here!
I upload this in October, but WMG owned it and subsequently it was taken off by YouTube, then equally oddly put back on a couple of days ago....enjoy, whilst it stays....thanks for taking time to comment, bro....
Thank You: It goes well after The Cornelius Bros "Don't Ever Be Lonely." Now, if you can find out who arranged the strings, I'd be grateful. They are incredible
Do you mean for this song or 'don't ever be lonely'? All I can say, Peter, is that Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin produced this so I suppose they were responsible for the arrangement too - with Mike Lewis doing the arrangement for the Cornelius Bros song. Hope that helps....
Wonderful to have such a knowledgeable dude. I actually saw Cornell Dupree on CPW in NYC in the 80s, when I was walking with my gf. I stopped him and told him how much the licks on that song meant to me. He set the standard for soul guitar for years after that. PG
I never saw anyone famous when I was walking with my girlfriend Marilyn, although she set the standard for soulful girlfriends for years after that.....Mike

Good work! Captures the rain element in the movies very well using a much-loved tune.
