could you also just jump start the psu with for example a paperclip and then just use that power for example fans so you could have more power for a gpu?
@rhblakeman because alot of ppl have plenty of room in there case and also have an old power supply laying around why not just get some sleeving throw on it put it in and save some money
@572dwayne Doing it the way presented here is just asking for a fire that no insurance company will cover damages from is why you don't want to do it like that. But it's your home or business and your equipment so have fun. When you blow things or have a fire you will see that you didn't save anything. 500W brand new PSUs are dirt cheap.
@rhblakeman thats why u jump start it instead of connecting them together u can just turn it on and off when ever your not using the lights or cathodes
You need to connect the green and a black wires together to the same color wires on your other psu. Or you can go to FrozenCPU(dot)com/products/5637/cpa-167/Lian-Li_Dual_Power_Supply_Adapter_Cable.html and get a ready made adapter to connect both PSUs together.
can you connect the 2nd psu to any component you want, because i want to buy another videocard and connect the 2nd psu to that one? does it matter if they are not the same model with the same power? last question, do you still have 2psu-s and have you ever had a problem with it
@pedinoway2 i wouldnt do that, unless the powersupplies were exactly the same, i mean exactly the same. because what can happen is that the different voltages and current from the supplies can short circuit the rest of your components since they are all conected electrically. i would only use the second powersupply for cd drives and cooling fans
it doesnt work that way if you have a vid card that needs 30 amps on the 12v rail side and one of those supplys dont have it your not gonna do anything to help it
nice vid man! great help, idk why more people dont do this, i mean people that bought generic computer that feel like buying a graphics card can buy a cheap 250watt power supply from ebay for similar, (newegg has 480watt for $15) instead some people buy like $80 for 200watts more rofl!
The 2 power supplies tha u hv connected r they of same kind....i mean ,,, i have 1 ps of 400 W n Other of 300 W cn i connect them,,,, N thier voltage r also nt same !
@Az00799 u can use whatever you like... ive used 3 power supplies in one computer. one was an okia 550watt, a logisys 480watt, and a server power supply 180watt, to run gtx 260 sli hahahaha but was my freinds which later bought a proper 850watt psu. but hey 550+480+180=1210 watts which is amazing hahahaha btw all those powersupplies where cheap generic crap power supplies
@neonzion7 Thnx Budy,,,, Buh,,, The Computer person said thats In possible,,, And I would burn,,, My pci slot,,,if I use two Different power supplies with different Ampere,,,, What u say about this bro,,,???... I hv 1 with 300 Watts N other of 400 W
@Az00799 rofl no, the power supplies will not share anything.... they will not share volts, watts, amps nothing.... they are 2 seperate units.... right now as im talking to u i am running a 550watt power supply with a 250watt power supply powering my graphics card, there is no problem and idk who told u such a lie
i just made a quick switch system to turn the second one on. Doing this is kind of risky bc of the free hanging wires left in your case, that may rub and ground on something. if you take the green wire (PS_ON#), and the nearest black one (COM) and link them, a PSU will turn on. All you have to do is make a switch between them with 12 gauge wire. its an old SLI tip really.
I have a question please, I have an ATX 400W built in my case and another one in my old case which is 230W, if i will do this method, i will have a total of 630W or each PSU will work independently ?
@ipullstuffapart if your overclocking you use practically double or triple even when using dual gpu or if your motherboard has 2 8 pin connectors it uses 600 watts on the board.. the point is to overclock or if you have 2 crappy psu's then hook em both up and have some power eg 2 250 watt make a 500 watt. instead of buying a new one but theres probably a million different explanations to the point of dual psu's
Acually its called the ATX form factor, every case, motherboard, power supply, and component must comply with it to ensure compatibility, the cable colors are the same on all ATX power supplies.
@destructelectronics it's an output signal. I would suspect you may damage some supplies hooking it to green. You are hooking two different outputs together.
@k3nshin21 The gray cable in the power supply is called the Power Good Signal and it tells the computer that all the voltages and current are operating at their correct levels. If the levels different a bad signal will come out and tell the computer not to power up, to prevent damage to the components from higher than normal voltages.
i have done this for my GC = (graphic card) and it didnt work please help me ;S in any way ! my GC is HD 5750 it use 75 watt ! and i have two 350 watts
This is pretty crude but I suppose it would work. You can also put a switch on the 2nd power supply and turn it on separate from the other. This would probably be safer when it comes to short circuits etc. but may cause problems when posting. Unless turned on right after boot.
Because the PSU's only share the power-on signal, they function as two seperate systems. And so their stress tolerance depends purely on the qulaity of the power supplies
IF anyone is doing this for their video card be aware that if you use your normal power supply and an extra one that you will need to break the ground pin off the extra power supply otherwise your graphics will have horrizontal lines like a crt which is due to the electricity having two ground paths.
That's could be a solution to use 2 electrical cords to do a " Y " or at least make sure the power supply with the broken pin get a good contact metal to metal with the PC case . Tighten metal screw could do, but make sure to use a short one and be careful of where you choose to put it . Always solder hand made connections to avoid connectivity problems .
You also have to connect at least one black wire between both power supplies. In your case the ground return is being done through the computer's metal casing or the IDE/SATA cables which is pretty unreliable and could mess things up. Remember that when mixing power supplies, both must be at the same ground potential.
