  • This is such rich gold. The making of Ain't No Way. Look at Aretha and Carolyn. Look at them.

  • FYI, Cigarettes were not looked down upon during the time this was recorded. Smoking was not only accepted but was encouraged. Thank God that in the early 90's a campaign against smoking caused such an uproar that now you can barely smoke outside. So it is not surprising that she is smoking but what is surprising is just how fast our society's outlooks can change in just a matter of a decade or two!

  • I think Aint No Way was such a hit. I dont know anyone thats never felt that way

  • I cant believe that she was smokin that cigarette

  • absolutely fabulous.... what a great honor ... hear aretha in studio....nowadays nobody can sing like that... what a pity

  • Really good stuff...and what I gather from this is that Carolyn's idea of what the song REALLY was, was very much Gospel influenced. The handclapping is how we "keep time", with a call and response.

  • her sister was just so amazing and just talented i mean damn when you hear the finishes product its like her sister knew that aretha could deliver

  • This is beautiful.

  • I'd like to thank the producer God and his co-producers (Rev. C.L. Franklin and Barbara (nee' Seegers) Franklin for sharing these wonderful prodigies and offspring : ARETHA, Carolyn, Erma, Cecil, and Vaughn. Rock and soul!

  • the beautiful creative process!

  • Pure moment of perfection! Would have paid to be in that studio...

  • Her husband Ted White....A Real Winner

  • When will there be a movie about this great woman????????????

  • Amazing!! I wonder if there is still a copy of the rough draft of "Ain't No Way"?

  • I love this video so much!!!...What song is that @4:00

  • @piinkdollTX

I guess it's "Groovin'" from her 1968 album "Lady Soul"(in which you can find "Ain't No Way" :D)

  • Ain't No Way - no doubt - is one of the most beautiful songs Aretha's ever done.

  • seeing geniuses like this at work is pretty amazing

  • Sister Carolyn may you rest in peace thank u for being a lady-in-waiting supporting Our Queen and thank you for the wonderful songs

  • i love the way she held the cig lol

  • She kind of looks like Jennifer Hudson in this clip. Nice to see Carolyn

  • Sweet!

  • We all know Aretha could sang like it was no tomorrow....but she shows that it runs in the family.....just listen to Carolyn

  • I first saw Aretha singing at her fathers church New Salem Baptist Church in 1958. Man! She had a great range with no trouble hitting the high notes either. The word in my neighborhood was that Aretha will soon be singing rock 'n roll. I also heard that Berry Gordy REALLY wanted Aretha for the new Motown organization but she turned them down because of how they paid their artists (almost nothing).

  • That was very smart of Aretha Franklin, and I really love her.

  • thank you i really enjoyed this ...nice to see early aretha as well as a candid side to a real person

    god is love ...

  • Aretha, you're gorgeous! : ) I'm still feeling this version of 'Aint No Way'. Hopefully, it's an alternate take that may be released one day.

  • Atlantic Records multitracks tapes burnt up in a warehouse fire in the 1970s. So for the most part there are no alternate takes available nor re-mixes for artists on Atlantic. Too bad huh? The main exception is "The Coasters". The tapes were being remixed in Stereo for a project when the fire took place.

  • LOL @ Aretha Smoking a damn cigarette!!!! while in the studio recording in and out!! Only the queen!

  • That gospel background allowed Aretha and Carolyn to communicate with her fellow musicans create these masterpieces. Today's so-called American R&B artists are secular singers who don't have a musical building block to build thier style of music and that's why they suck so bad and lack Soul. The U.K. Soul scene has stayed to those roots and added loops and beats to create a modern/roots hybrid of Black American Music but we have relied on to much digital technology.

  • Nother thing...Ree and Carolyn know they could sport them some short looks...they would ROCK a short do and it looked FABULOUS on them.

  • Ree sure canplay that piano...and When exactly did Carolyn pass away...she as a great songwriter...didn't she write Angel also?

  • Yes sister Carolyn did write Angel. Carolyn sadly died in 1988 and their brother Cecil dies a year later.

  • Thanks for respoinding..I thought she wrote that one.

  • No problem.

  • the last few seconds of that was real cute, of Aretha doing the choreography lol

  • This is soo priceless thanks! I just wish Carolyn was still alive to enough the sucess of that song.

  • Carolyn is doing some beautiful singing here. Can anyone tell me if this is from a larger documentary of some sort?

  • I'm not sure because I have seen one on Aretha but it did not have this in it.

  • Yes this was a 1968 documentary during the Lady Soul sessions it also shows her singing at her dads church & playing piano with her brother..also it shows a concert in in detroit...

  • @vhsorbeta35 , Yes, this is a clip that was broadcast by PBS years ago , the 70's, i believe you can purchase this through pbs. they have a website for such purchases of documentaries.

  • This is hot! I love it.

  • that note at 1:36 was priceless

  • whats the song they singing at the end while they're dancing?

  • It's Aretha's cover of Groovin' The Rascals did it 1st I believe. I can't believe they didn't mention Cissy Houston's contributing vocals to Aretha's Ain't No Way. That's Cissy hitting those high notes in the final version of the recording of the song.

  • they might not have planned on her doing that just yet

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! To the one and only Queen in American music. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. She is 67 today. By the way it was 1967 that she recorded her ultra hit R E S P E C T.

  • nice video, thanks for posting.

btw, i didn't know she use to smoke

  • CAROLYN CAN SAAAAANG!!!

  • Not only is Aretha a Brilliant recording artist but she is so intelligent and articulate . i really enjoyed listening to her speak.

  • Aretha vouging at 4:59. You go girl!!!

  • This is it! Cant imagine music minus Aretha Franklin. Tom Dowd.

MAN! to see Aretha Franklin & Carolyn Franklin like that; witnessing the creation of what blossomed to be 1 of the great soul classics of all times is some heavy stuff.

BTW... Aretha wasn't satisfied WITH THAT. I'm really feeling this version of 'Aint No Way'.

  • At 0:55, that's Aretha's ex-husband and songwriter Ted White. She filed for divorce in '69 after his abuse on her went too far. He was the Ike Turner of her life

  • True but unlike Tina,Aretha fought back and from what I read Aretha left Ted towards the end of 1968..

  • That is very true.

  • Ummm. Tina did fight back

  • That's true at the end of her and Ike's marriage...

  • Damn Aretha was Pretty as a young girl

  • Does anyone know the last song that Aretha is singing at the end of the video clip? I would love to try and find it. I never heard it before.

  • The name of the song is Grooving. There is a clip of her singing Grooving live on Youtube.

  • This is a different version on the song on youtube. Is there anyway I can find this version or was this a practice session? I love this version better.

  • I think they were practicing to the record.

  • Well darn! I wish they would have song it that way. I LOVE that version.

  • @yafe70: the song you heard at the end is called "groovin". You heard the recorded track. the recording of groovin is incredible. you will be able to find this song on a sixties album she did. the girl was bad.

  • Off topic here, but while I do agree that Aretha is one of the greatest singers around today, I'm beginning to wonder what in the world is going on with her 'health-wise'? She seems to be gaining more and more weight as the years progress, and I was just wondering if something is going on, and why she refuses (yes, it is her life and her business, but with diabetes and other diseases out there it makes you wonder.) deal with her weight issue? Not 'dissing' just deeply concerned.

  • i totally agree.

  • Aretha is losing weight more and more each time i see. She is determine to get healthy and stay a a good size.

  • TheQueenAretha, That's a good thing to hear, and I was just asking because I saw her on a program recently where she was being interviewed from a couch (not sure of the date), and she looked as if she was having trouble sitting up, maybe she was just lounging I hope. If she's losing weight than that's a good thing and I will keep her in my prayers and wish her the best. Thanks for the update.

  • Yes i was worried about Aretha's well being as well. But she is losing weight, and don't worry Aretha is walking find. She still doing shows and just recently was in New York on Dec. 14, singing Touch MY Body and she was looking great. The video is on Youtube right now.

  • omg this is gold here. magic I love it

  • what's the name of the first song (only a few lyrics) in this video pls?

  • Hey Dylan, the song featured at the very beginning of this video is "Chain Of Fools"

  • from another Capricorn...Tonight I was just going thru my media player, putting this where that goes, stuffing that into this folder....came across some old Franklin songs...man..I just sat there listening to some of them, just...sat there and listened to her. Yeah, I got a little weepy. She's that good. Aretha is the pinnacle of the human voice's ability.

  • from one Capricorn Soul to another, thank you for posting this scene so it could come to life for me / I have been looking at a picture of her smoking that cig in my box set for 15 years, and now I know why she was so damn sad

  • the queen asbsolut. heard her again today on allmemphismusic

  • a fantastic record of the creation of some of the 20th century's greatest music. what a pleasure and a privilege to watch it! thanks for uploading!

  • Carolyn was a genius! her backing vocals are lengendary!

  • Tightest Backing band eva!

  • Thats the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. My grandmother used to babysit the drummer. Aretha's music was never the same after they parted ways.

  • Roger Hawkins? is that his name? It's at least a bit of them muscle shoals alabama boys, the only Aretha tune that was actually recorded in the muscle shoals studio was "never loved a man", but i think the atlantic guys got the shoals band to fly up alot and record in new york, due to personal conflicts with atlantic and fame.

  • Yes that's Roger Hawkins. They played on all of Aretha's Atlantic records. Jerry Wexler slipped them out of town and up to New York, right out from under Rick Hall's nose.

  • kperk014 Aretha continued to do some great recordings up until 1973. Her music just changed and grew into a different direction.

  • Even after 1973 Areha continue to make great music. With the exception of her You Album, which is still a great album.

  • you don't like the you album

  • I do like the You album but half the songs i like and the other half i don;t care for.

  • intramontabileeee!

  • What the name of the music she's singing before playing piano?

  • Sounds like "Chain of Fools" to me

  • It's my grandmama favroite song. Thanks ReRe for this tune Rest in peace "Ethel Mae Garrett" aka "mama"

  • Aretha's sister Carolyn can sing too,

  • i agree her family is so musical thats such a blessing.

  • Personally, I've always thought that Ain't No Way is by far, her best vocal moment caught on record. Sure she had higher & more powerful songs, but it's just that this song was sung so real, so graceful, light - yet soulfully packed. Not to mention she included some pretty difficult notes and moments to reach and give justice to - even for seasoned (and extremely gifted) vocalists such as Whitney Houston or Patti LaBelle (both I also love & respect). Aretha owns this song. Thanks for sharing. =D

  • I must agree with you on this one. Her vocal is sublime on this song. (Too, this is a great bit of what I'll call "gut bucket' R&B songwriting. That is, the raw, highly emotive R&B we saw from James Brown, Ray Charles, Etta James and Sam Cooke among others. That is, when "Pop" radio allowed that more edgy sound to get onto the radio.)This vocal, I think, paved the way for Whitney and not a few of Patti's later successes. It's just gorgeous! I nominate, "Day Dreaming," as her 2nd best.

  • Ah yes, the Golden Age of Soul and R&B. =D Truly, such beautiful vocals on this song. And yes, "Day Dreaming" is sung beautifully as well - classy yet profound. I also like her rendition of "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" - such Gospel infused, spine-tingling vocal performance. If only Radio and Retail can pay attention more to real singing and music than mass appeal, a lot of well-deserving musicians will shine. But then again, commercial success is also a must. Irony. Wishful thinking.

  • Janis RIP was great in her own way but she was not the Queen.

  • janis joplin's soulful musical influences came from lesser known black artist not UNlike aretha's style

  • fishfoodlad Aretha did that the very first time she picked up a mike.

  • Boy, You NEED TO HEAR ERMA FRANKLIN (damnit!!) Aretha' other sister, fucking RIP "Piece of My Heart" a brand new ass...FIRST!!! BEFORE you go and say some else is better than the Franklin Sisters of Detroit!!!

  • heheh...i know that's right...I just got one of her really Rare singles it's called "I just don't need you (at all)"...OMG i listen to it everyday ...Erma RULES!!!!

  • what's the name of the song containing the first lyrics of this video pls?

  • she did and she has.

  • Groovin! Look at that bastard sittin up there.. Mr. White aint know how good he had it! Look at Aretha Standin up there like cat hair voguing. Her royal sexyness...

  • was that him. i wonder is he still alive.

  • in your opinion yes :)

  • Thank the Lord for Aretha Franklin and her family!

  • its amazing to me how after watching this piece, history in the making and not feel the music and how he was created, that people would come away from this and change the subject and start commenting on smoking which she given up and talking about her outfits,WOW i was so blow away by the singing and the making of aint no way i didnt see anything else some people just focus on the negative and then wonder why theirs so much negativity in their lives.

  • Aretha, Girl can you sing! And Carolyn too!

  • Yes, Aretha stopped smoking years ago. In an article in Jet or Ebony she talked about when she stopped smoking that's when she really start having the hardest time with weight issues. We all have our own struggles in life.

  • i didnt know arethat smoked... im sure shes quit by now

  • She quit in 1992.

  • Yep, Aretha stopped smoking to salvage her voice. Food consumption has since become her

addiction. She had on drapes during her recent

Grammy Awards show appearance. Why she goes around bra-less is a no-brainer. Spaghetti straps are for skinny women only. Somebody tell Aretha!

  • thats was rude... like u said it is a addiction she just needs to get the will and the drive to beat her addiction

  • To see Aretha get her head around this incredible song as it's being born. Wow! That's made my day.

  • Oh wow!

  • Still getting her kicks at 66. Happy Birthday, Aretha. To the Queen of Soul. 3-25-08.

  • Happy Birthday Aretha

  • Tom Dowd has a great voice. The last 11 minutes...too cute!

  • aretha really has messed up her voice with all that smoking. im glad she finally stoped in the 90's but the damage was already done. whitney has damaged her voice also....if you listen to gladys knight she sounds the same from now to back in the day

  • You know who still sounds pretty good?

    Etta James...

  • Love the way they was dancing at the beginning, looked like fun..takem to chuch with them chords..

  • p.s stephanie if I was you I;d get rid of him to announce who he is to the world. Fire him he means you no good! No good at all.

  • What an amazing piece, watching a master at work putting together a masterpiece. Her voice was in it's prime.

  • i know one thing and one thing only she is the true queen .

  • this is so amazing to me. thanks 4 posting!

  • that crazy how all her sisters could sing.

  • Singer of this day need to go back to this type of standard....this may have seemed crude to some...but look at what it produced.

  • I must say so. Maybe it's my time. A today singer with yesterday style, I love it.

  • BREATH-TAKING SHOW OF MS. FRANKLIN'S GOD-GIVEN MUSICAL BRILLIANCE!!!!!

Tom Dowd has a good teaching voice.

  • GREAT...

  • They were getting the song down in a very hands- on crude kinda way...amazingly it worked.

  • that was an amazing clip... i need more!

  • Hudson is the logical choice to play Aretha at this time. She's the hottest singer actress out there right now. She looks like a young Aretha and I bet her weight can flutuate like Ree Ree's. Why would Aretha want Holly Berry to play her when Jennifer Hudson would be a perfect fit.

  • i'm sorry, but hudson ain't got nothin' and i mean nothin' on fantasia. fantasia will run circles around jennifer. jennifer is bad, but just not as bad as fantasia...that girl is dangrous, especially with a gospel song..

  • chile, are you deaf or you like the sound of a platypus squaking like Fantasia! Fanny is okay but JHUD??!!! Jennifer Hudson is the Damn TRUTH!!!!

  • @nubianmanmusic Why be rude and call Fantasia names?

  • I think Regina King would be the perfect fit.

  • WoW!!!!

  • They forgot to show how Cissy Houston came in and put da finishing touches on *Aint no way*

  • SO TRUE cissy made the song!!

  • They just dont understand...lol! i am glad u know.

  • Is Cissy on the album version singing Soprano??

  • OH YESSSS

  • Cissy Houston is the operatic soprano in the background

  • yes go to the song itself. there are some facts there.

  • does anyone know the name of the film of which this clip was taken? I would really appreicate it very much, thanks

  • I've seen this video a number of times and find it facinating to see the creative process behind one of my favorite Aretha Franklin songs, Ain't No Way. It's good to see part of Aretha's genius had much to do with her sister Carolyn's talent and input.

  • Unbelievable footage! Where is this from ????

  • At the end of groovin Aretha appears to be voguing, she was thirty years ahead of madonna.

  • for sure

  • STOP SMOKING GIRL !!!!!!!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL VOICE, BEAUTIFUL WOMEN!

  • What rasp are you talking about? This film is from the 60's. She's so amazing. I love love love ARETHA.

  • smoking didn't ruin her voice!!!

She didn't get that rasp from eating Yogurt!

  • Hey Everybody,

This is Victor Antonio that works with Stephanie Mills she doesn't pay me much of anything she does feed me at her home but i don't feel its worth it because the food is nasty.

  • how in the world did Screenedit commet get on here with out being deleted !!!! Its a disgrace and a shame brother I feel sorry for you you don;t have nothing better to do with your time than write nasty commets. Even if its true which I think it anit ,How could you repeat such filth. Get A Life!

  • Get a sense of humor.

  • Aretha Franklin is an amazing singer but smoking severley damaged her voice like Whitney Houston they smoke too much and it destroys there incredible voices i can't believe that they can be so fuckin stupid.

  • If it damaged her voice, how comes she still sings amazing, lots of singers smoke and still sound good.

  • She st6ill sings amazing because she's Aretha Franklin. However, she sounds nothing now like she did when she was in her prime. And it has alot to do with her singing. Do some research on the way the lungs and voice box are constructed. Toxic smoke will really mess things up after a while.

  • smoking is bad and im sure she knows it but there is no need for the term you used she is in no way stupid . remember respect respect respect.

  • Everyone,

Please learn as much as you can about Tom Dowd, the guy with the beard. He was one of the most prolific producers, arrangers and engineers of the past 50 years, especially in his capacity as an Atlantic Records producer. His genius is not to be missed!!!

  • the queen in her at her best!!

  • Wow, thanks for this clip, its fascinating! Aretha we love you! I'm really curious about that Carolyn import too...

  • Aretha has a library of great songs. But I believe "Aitn't No Way" is the one song that defines her as the Queen of Soul. Aretha's sister Carolyn was a great singer in her own right. Carolyn was also a great song writer as this song reflects. Carolyn was not above singing background and performing with Aretha. Carolyn has a incredible import cd on Kent records.

  • what's the song at the end of the video? I love it!

  • The Song At the end of the Video is called Groovin....I love it too!!

  • Thank you ;)

  • What's the song at the end of the video? I love it!

  • Imagine her voice if she didn't smoke!!
