  • It is great that they covered the racism and hate people went through in the 60s. I get a feeling that some of the people here commenting are pissed that they covered this part of southern history. I love you journeyman pictures! Brilliant!

  • muah the racism i see from the comments for this video is too a perfection. hmm good ole AMERICA. You have to make everything out to be a racial issue. I love how they covered many facets of AMerica but didnt sugar coat the racism there. Alabama is beautiful as it is my home but the racism there combined with the bible beaters is absolute bigotry.

  • If the African americans had taken up Lincolns proposal of setting up their own colonies outside of the USA they would have been better off

  • Comment removed

  • @khalilahinjapan i know you deleted your comment but my comment was not directed against african americans, im just saying if they had all migrated to haiti or something they would have been better off there than they would in the usa,

  • NOTICE THE BLACK MAN DOESNT METION THE WHITES OPRRESSED IN AMERICA BEFORE BLACKS AND ALSO THE CHINESE SLAVES THAT ALSO BUILT OUR RAILROADS THIS IS A 2001 BLACK RACIST HE ONLY ACKNOWLEDGES WHAT WAS DONE TO HIS COLOR AND NOT OF ALL THE SLAVES IN AMERICA

  • Um the difference between the "white side" of town and the "black side" of town is you get to live in projects for free while you usually have to pay for a nice house.

Maybe in 40 years you should have gotten a job and bought a house instead of sitting around waiting for one to be handed to you by the Government.

Wanna know what to tell you kids? Tell them to do good in school so they can get a good job. Or they can sit around doing nothing for 40 years like you.

  • u people are missing the point - what camera is this guy using? that's what i wanna know. And btw, Australia is pretty behind in the openness to racial diversity. Ever see non-white people on Aussie TV (ads, serials, news)? yeaaah. thought so.

  • @powerhungrymice. I see diversity here in Australia every day. Maybe you should get your over fed ass away from the tv ,and see for your self ,that you cannot help people who do not want to help them selves.

That applies for all races and cultures.

You seem typical (American) in that you are looking for fault with others (Australia) to justify your misgivings, rather that looking inward, and fixing the mess you have made as a culture and country.

    .....Aussie Jim

  • @jimbothegarbo i'm not American. I live in Australia and I am Chinese. I feel misrepresented when I don't see any of my people on TV. If TV is for the masses, what is australia saying where there aren't any non-white people on Home and Away-type TV serials, on our news desks, on our TV ads? It's saying that australia is dominated by a culture that doesn't include me. Sure you 'see' diversity when you walk around every day, but racial tolerance is quite different to racial acceptance.

  • @powerhungrymice Your chinese, go back to China stop inviting all the illegal chinese to australia we know you do it, dont beg to have chinese on TV we have your news on thats enough Aussie tv is shit as it is

  • so sadddened to hear the preference of the younger generation for mindless, violence and mysoginistic themed rap music over the power, beauty, eloquence, sheer skill and utter artistry of blues music. i dont understand it and never will. dont let the blues ever die.

  • whats the song at the beginning

  • i think american govt. want to invest more in iraq now

hahahahah poor americans good luck to them

  • it's obvious when an individual superimposes his misconceptions upon a work before it is finished.

  • It's always so obvious when someone starts a project with a sinister objective. This is worse than Borat. At least Borat doesn't take himself seriously.

It's worthless. So pretentious. A total waste of our time.

As is the case with most bad art, this tells us more about the artist than it does about the subject.

    epic fail.

One of the many amazing things about America, is it's ability to examine itself. This half-ass effort is pathetic. It's been done before, better.

  • so harsh!! lol...*thumbs up*

  • The video states that there are "amazing differences between blacks and whites" in the South; however, I don't feel that we are all that different. I'm white, and I grew up near Highway 61. I generally feel like I have more in common with black people from this area than white people from outside the South. We eat the same foods, have similar accents, and share many of the same beliefs and traditions. I can't say the same for many non-southern white people.

  • Have to agree. Southern whites and blacks have much more in common with each other than yankees. The land hasnt half the ills yankees think it does, but we'd have less if blacks and whites here realised that fact.

  • I agree with you whole-heartedly, pelicanpride. I am from the South and have many times expressed the same sentiments as you have written. It still amazes me when non-Southerners will classify certain foods or customs as being distinctly "soul-food" or "African-American" when they are in fact shared by the larger Southern populace (void of race or color). I think to truly understand the complexities of our wonderful region, you must live here and observe objectively the life we share.

  • ya... agree i have alot more in common with the blacks from here than i do with whites (yankees) from up north

  • I live near Boston....I would love to go down in the deep south. I am a 3-D photographer and this looks like a fantastic place to get some real earthy American pictures

  • too true, europeans think american south, and they immediately think racism

  • Mississippi is a land that does not follow trends, Mississippi has its own culture that doesn't need to be changed just because some white liberal who never lived near non-white thinks so.

  • I was born raised and still lives in Mississippi. This is a really good documentary on rural Mississippi I am however sadded to no end that they only show black civil rights activist and only seem to show beaten down black people as if to say it's only a black problem in Mississippi to be broke and hopeless with a life of shattered dreams. It sucks no matter who you are down here.

  • wtf as soon as Europeans go to the south the only thing that enters their mind is black people. They really will never understand the place.

  • @NJRocks281 That's an extremely well-founded general sweeping swipe you make here... Europe comprises of 50 countries, many of its citizens are open and intelligent and speak several languages (how many do you speak?), are interested in other cultures and travel to to get to know other countries and cultures - all of them know the difference between Switerland and Sweden. Do you get me?

  • @NJRocks281 lol a lot of the so called pro-europe Americans are not happy at all to see the full coverage of a certain type of people from the south ahahaha rather than the southern belles and Paul Bryant. I am from ALabama lets just say that I love my home but its great to be away from the racism. now living overseas and its wonderful how i dont have to deal with the racist crap. I only see it when I try to watch videos on youtube. sigh good ole america. I love this video...its brilliant.

  • booker T booker JR.. i want that name!

  • I'm certainly glad that the "south" everybody refers to is the Southeast part of the US, as the Southwest is completely different. Very dry and hot though, unfortunately.

  • Oxford has the same high school fight song we have. Its good too!

    Gonzales, Tx

  • I love this. I've never been to the south, but I always wanted to - this only confirms that wish.

  • hicks land

  • What do you mean by this? You know, 'hick' can be interpreted in a multitude of ways...

  • Mississippi is the poorest state in the country

  • Really, I thought it was Kentucky!!!

  • Americans - you need to do all you can to try keep the blues alive.

  • can anyone tell me what's the name of the first song? i love it! thanks

  • what bothers me the most about southerners is not their ignorance but their arrogancy.

  • Soon (may be before 2025) This Nation of ASSHOLES will be called a country of beggars. Curse on you pigs. Thriving on the poors money. Nation of corrupt moralless leaders (George W. Bush, Dick & Condi). You all will burn in the fire of Hell.

  • bramrati......now there's a good southern name.

  • It's so obvious that guy is from New York, or at least the urban northeast. He says "Look at these people, they're so interesting and strange!" while taking pictures of things familiar to 90% of Americans. OMG football and cheerleaders! What's this strange homecoming queen phenomenon?? A gravel road! A black man playing a guitar! Church!

His perspective is so twisted to think that rural America harbors more contradictions than "normal" urban America when in fact the opposite is true.

  • funk:

You completely miss the point of this photographer's work. He's recording life as it is in the South. Interesting and strange? Well..I would hope you find everything you encounter in life interesting. And strangeness can come on you at odd times...it is wherever you find it. The photographer does not have preconceived ideas about the South...which is what you are suggesting with your comment.

  • funk:

"His perspective is so twisted to think that rural America harbors more contradictions than "normal" urban America"

Every place has its contradictions. What place can be said to be free of them? That is not what I see in his photos at all. His photos are quite realistic. Full of emotion and intelligence.

  • Southerners, never be ashamed of your heritage. I love this country and many things the world has to offer, but there is no other place in the world like the south. Sure there are crazy Baptists, but there are crazy religions all over America. The majority of Southerners are helpful and friendly, just like the Mexicans in Arizona!!! Unlike the snobs in some other snooty places I won't name here.

  • are they beatiful women in southern usa?

    Then i have to visit!

grand canyon i have heard has beatiful sceneary

  • Southerners = Chest beating nationalists who prevent America from living up to its true ideals.

  • Poor as shit, Southerners vote Republican. Let them leave the union and everyone in America will sigh a sigh of relief. Good bye and good riddance. Anyone with a political IQ will be allowed to move north or west. End of story.

  • this isnt anti-american

hes just saying what he has been observing

  • ethnic diversity = chaos !!!

  • "ethnic diversity = chaos" ...in your mind.

  • it is genocide and ethnic cleansing!

  • Mississippi in my opinion is one of the most racist states in the nation. I live in the state of mississippi and I can tell you that because I was born and raised there. I have lived and Visited other parts of the U.S and there is nothing like the "Good Old Boys" of Mississippi. Yes, I said it and and the reason why I said it is because I am a Woman that's strike number 1 and to be black at that with a dark skinned father and a mother that is French creole.

  • Folks, Mississippi is the best place to live in the USA. SEC football and hot women. I would rather live there than any other place. Much better than Britain or New York. Unless your a multi-millionaire a New Yorker lives in a 700 sq-ft box and no car. In Mississippi you have 3000 sq-ft house with a pool and lawn. Plus, the ghetto people all live in a corner of town and the cops keep them away.

  • Who are "the ghetto people" and why do the cops keep them in "a corner of (your) town"?

  • hahahahaha

  • Mississippi is the best place to live? sure.. as long as you arent slightly tanned... or support those who are...

  • Still wainting for a reply jgv1.

And New Yorkers don't have cars? That's the basis for a comparison between New York and Mississippi? Hell, you don't need to have a car in New York City! The subway gets you wherever you need to go. They have one of the best mass transit systems in the world. Dolt.

  • New Yorkers not having cars is not the worst thing, but you missed my point. NYers live a life in the middle of high inflation, concrete, ugly crowds, and clutter.

Further, this video does not mention how the south has a higher standard of living than the rest of the nation. Same wages, but way lower inflation. The poor people of the US actually live in the urban North. This video focuses on how a poor minority live (not meaning blacks only), not the neighborhoods where professionals live.

  • Look: Explain this comment:

"the ghetto people all live in a corner of town and the cops keep them away."

You wrote this comment one month ago on this video. Don't believe you wrote it? Look at All Comments and find it. You tell me: What does it mean?

  • Bapyou: It means that instead of having dangerous people wondering just outside your door, sitting by them in the subway, or rubbing shoulders as you walk down a sidewalk...a family can live in a sub-division that keeps them and their property safe

Don't interpret this as racism, middle class black people live away from danger also. Interpret "Ghetto" as anyone that does not participate constructively to society and does things that you would not want your kids to emulate.

  • Oh come on. How can someone read your comment and not conclude that your use of the phrase "ghetto people" is a euphemism for black folks? A little disengenuous are we?

And "ghetto" means "anyone that does not participate constructively to society"? Ummm ... you mean like George Bush? Couldn't be any more destructive than that asshole. LOL

  • I do not like Bush either, I don't get your point? Sort of a worse credit crisis, the world would be better if Gore had won in 2000. Replace "Ghetto" with Drug-Enthusiast, Meth-Enthusiast, Sub-Primer, or whatever else.

My point is that Mississippi is a great place to live. Since I did live there and I lived in the "advanced" slum of NYC, I have authority to say so. I don't need a documentary to explain my home to me.

  • The point: "ghetto people" is a euphemism for black folks. You're being disengenuous if you say otherwise. If you don't like black folks, that's fine. Not liking black folks is standard American racism; good old American values. Stand up and be proud of your racism. Quit trying to weasle out of the true intent of your original comment ("the ghetto people all live in a corner of town and the cops keep them away"). I'm not the PC police. Be what you are, not what others think you should be.

  • Thank God I am from the North, Minnesota in particular.

  • why is this doc making the usa look bad?

  • You say that as if the usa wasn`t.

  • BBC...lefty...mmm, guess it depends how far right you're coming from.

  • Not far at all.

  • Fay kill your self....you dont know anything about 9/11 or living in the south....TEXAS....Everyone know Miss is the shit hole of the south right below Arkansas..

  • Here is your typical Anti-American "news" report from the BBC or some such lefty group. You have to make a big effort to find anything like this story. You have to pass up all the wonderfulness of this great country. The Europeans have managed to start two wars within fifty years, killing millions and who, by the way, still have rampant antisemitism, yet they come to America looking for the typical anti-American story. Taking these stories at face value, is pathetic.

  • fayofVA:

This film was not made by the BBC. This film was made by journeymanpictures, an Australian company. And if you think that Australians are all a bunch of "lefties", please watch another journeymanpictures documentary called 'Dangerous Ground - 44 min documentary' here on YouTube. It should make you feel right at home. They are as anti-Australian in that film as they are "anti-American" in this film. Cheers.

  • hooray for ignorance... The Americans have managed to start 2 wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) in 10 years... 2 in 50 or 2 in 10.. hmm whats worse?

  • Correction. The war on terrorism was started by monsters on 9/11. It was a very stupid move.

  • lol.. the war on terrorism wasnt related to 9/11, the war on terrorism was related to Bush wanting to finish his father job in Iraq... I cant believe there are still people who think that either wars were justified, but then again, thats why the South exists ;)

  • Middle Eastern extremists flew planes into bldgs. killing innocent people on 9/11, thus starting the war on terrorism. It was a foolish decision.

  • ...Have you even read, or been interested in other versions of the story? Or did you just listen to Fox and say alright that's the truth? The official story is full of holes.

  • Whatever why even comment on this if you're going to badmouth the US and the South.

  • 9/11 was a set up by the US governement to start a war against 'terror' and the middle-east so Halliburton (chaired by Cheneye at the time) could sign a multi-billion dollar deal to rebuild Iraq.

  • war on terror = sham! Don't be so stupid!

  • yeah and america has started 2 in 10 years

i guess that makes americans much more productive

  • If Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas were one nation, economically independent of American monetary policies, then it would be the world's poorest nation! It would be poorer than Moldova and Sudan.

There are no value added skills or human resources in those 3 states. Even blues music is a dead music full of cliches, toupes, and three-pays. Blues is *DEAD*. Please embrace the future!

A typical half-way decent white girl in the South is like that "geographic champ" beauty queen on youtube.

  • thats some real blues!

  • Please Google. Herbert Meyer What in the world is going on? A Global Intelligence briefing for CEO's by Herbert Meyer

  • Academia's conditioning of Americans to view judgment as being wrong. The Politically Correct nation is no longer discerning, no longer able to accumulate evidence, connect those things which are related, and form reasoned conclusions. They have accepted a crafted mirage in its place. Academia and media's perceptions, deceptions actually, have shaped an illusion. That's why Politically Correct Fools are so accepting of ..........................

  • True

  • Muslims and Egyptians had black and white slaves long before we did. We abolished slavery 135 years ago. But Academia and media want us to have white guilt.

  • Exactly. Saudi Arabia didn't abolish slavery until 1962!!!

  • they werent called slaves you fool. No the black history before you go running you mouth!! Muslims and Egyptians did not steal there slaves from another country!!! my god what crap are you saying

  • Of course were called slaves:) Slavery is a slavery, would it be in british, roman, egyptian, assyrian, iberian or other empires. Purpose is the same - free labour. Sadly still exists in other forms...

  • My comment was what you stated about Egyptians had slaves and they were not called slaves. Thats what they want you to believe! You really need to read some black history books to understand the root name and the beginning of the word of slavery. You are misinformed mister. Stop reading there his-story and read the true meaning of history.

  • To continue look up the word Mandingo look up the word slavery in the strong concordance on three greek and hebrew. Dont ever us the webster dictionary for its bias. Remember Webster himself owned slaves

  • slavery continued after the civil war in the form of forced labor by putting trumped up charges on blacks and locking them up, then farming them out to various companies - Fact! Read Douglas Blackmon's book. He makes it simple so even dullards will understand what DID HAPPEN.

  • this is effin america where our four fathers wanted to create a nation where "all men are created equally"

we are supposed to be better than some white racist rednecks. The saudis sell out their people for money and power what do you expect.

  • Yes, Australia is pretty racist even today and whats worse is that most people dont even know it. My great grandfather used to go kill abos for fun on weekends and my other great grandfather was an abo. At least I have the balls to speak the truth instead of lie of invent falsehoods to cover up what a shit holr you come from.

  • I don't come from there, I'm just telling you what I know from my experiences. There's racism north, south, east, west...and certainly in Australia and Europe. That's my whole point. However, I've never found a greater sense of hospitality anywhere in the world than in the South (and I am not white).

  • "My great grandfather used to go kill abos for fun on weekends"

And you are no more responsible for that than any Southerner living today is resposible for slavery or JIm Crowe, or modern Germans for the Nazis. Forchristsakes at what point are people responsible for their own actions and not those of previous generations? Pride in one's country or birthplace does not always have to be tempered by the history we cannot change.

  • but to not acknowledge what happened and pay for it speaks volumes. Clearly many in society have benefitted from slavery and systematic racism "after the fact". When wrong is acknowledge and ammends are made, we will all be better off. If you cannot understand that, you are a part of the problem.

  • "but to not acknowledge what happened and pay for it speaks volumes."

Are you kidding me? Every white American is forced to acknowledge it every friggin day, and if the trillions that have been poured into social programs, aimed mostly at blacks, is not "paying for it", then I don't know what you expect. At some point people need to ask THEMSELVES why they are not prospering. Having children that you can't afford to feed is a huge reason, as is addiction.

  • which social programs? the ones where the gov't pays 200 dollar a nite hotel bills to rich business owners to house an entire homeless family in that one nasty room. Or is it the one where the political croonies get the big 6 figure salary to be the administrator of some wacky program? That is weak and not an acknowledgement to what went down. blacks pay for those same programs with taxes too.

  • the Southerners are still racists towards African Americans. One of my college TA told me his cousins and his cousins' friends discriminated African Americans.

  • "One of my college TA told me his cousins and his cousins' friends discriminated African Americans."

I hope they're teaching you in college that judging an entire population based on anecdotes is bigotry. They obviously aren't teaching you how to write a sentence.

  • Don't attack every criticism

  • the....are....all.... One person is one person. There are millions of people in the South and, cannot be stereotyped, or generalized by such statements. Trolling for bate, are ye?

  • It seems as if this guy was attracted to unique areas, with traditional culture, such as the two areas in Mississippi. How about visiting the apartment complexes and, new neighborhoods cropping up all over Southern suburbia? I'd guess that the film producer would just see the same view of creeping suburbia as in the rest of the county and, would think nothjing of it, but that's where the people are, in far greater numbers than Oxford and, Clarksdale.

  • I know an elderly woman from Alabama, now in Massachusetts. She goes back often and says the South is far more integrated than New England. Up here very few whites have black friends beyond younger people who have one or two token black friends as trophies to show their supposedly open mindedness. In the South, however blacks and whites of similar social status live side by side, unlike Massachusetts, where they invariably CHOOSE to segregate themselves.

  • I live in a Southern neighborhood of small homes (averaging 1,000+ square feet- mostly brick) and, there are four black families living on my street. As I have driven around my town (about 60,000 people), I see a fair number of blacks living in majority white neighborhoods. There are also apartment complexes tucked in to these majority white neighborhoods with larger numbers of black and, hispanics. More hispanic immigrants are also moving into nicer homes. Does this happen much in the north?

  • "There are also apartment complexes tucked in to these majority white neighborhoods with larger numbers of black and, hispanics."

Very rarely - Northern liberalism is all about perception. While they love the outward appearance of tolerance, they move as far away from black areas as they possibly can. If you want to see the whitest areas of Massachusetts, look for the towns with the greatest concerntration of liberals.

  • People in the northern metropolitan areas don't move away from black areas to get away from blacks. A lot of it has to do with the urban decay starting in the 60s and 70s. People with the economic means to escape the deteriorating conditions in cities largely due to the influence of drugs, crime and economic depression were the majority white. Unfortunately, many blacks in the 60s and 70s did not have the means to relocate and were stuck in the cities. The economic rift has caused this division.

  • I don't know about that. I grew up in PA and, heard lot's of talk that when the blacks moved in the neighborhood went to pot. That attitude semed to be fairly among people of an earlier generation living in PA, NY, NJ, Massachusetts, etc. There were riots over forced busing in Boston in the 1970's and, whites clashed with Blacks in Chicago over the blacks wanting to move into white neighborhoods.

  • Haha, keep telling yourself that buddy. Anything to convince yourself you are not wrong I guess. Pretty pathetic.

  • Last I heard the north didnt import slaves and hence less blacks in the north. Are all southerners as dumb as you too?

  • Those slaves to the South all came through New York's harbors. The North had huge riots being drafted into civil war they thought was fought for blacks. Racism exists everywhere. I mean EVERYwhere. And Australia...wow, are you serious. I mean I think Amaerica screwed over natives, but Australians used to hunt down aboriginals for sport.

  • Oh really, they all came through New Yorks harbors eh? OMFG, I am never surprised how stupid you Americans are. You dumb fuckers don't even know yer own history. How utterly pathetic. Actually nearly all went to the Caribbean, Brazilian and Louisiana ports WHERE THE MARKET ACTUALLY EXISTED. Haiti and Cuba were where the first slave ports that existed in the NEW WORLD. You are either a liar or a dumb piece of shit. PWNED

  • "I am never surprised how stupid you Americans are."

An incredibly bigotted statement. Are YOU an example of how bigotted Austaralians are? Fortunately, I know enough Australians to know that you are not the spokesman for the country, just as no one you run into on a discussion board is a spokesman for America. Have you ever considered that the anti-American propaganda you are fed by your media is not accurate?

  • easy chopper!

  • Like i said too much pride too little education.

  • "Like i said too much pride too little education"

Keep telling yourself that while Northern cities disintegrate into slums while Southern cities are gleaming beacons of prosperity. Liberal arrogance knows no bounds. Too bad the world doesn't see the slums in Australia where the native people live over there. I have, and the racism in Australia is equal to the worst in America.

  • just keeps gettin' better and better? strange words after that vid. he seems to romanticize "the South" and obviously doesn't identify with any of its people, who are suffering or racist or what have you.

  • those poor black folk sure know how to make good music.

  • Wow, this video is kinda stupid. Instead of interviewing the 70 year olds that grew up in segregation, how bout he interviews kids and teenagers? The south today is the most integrated part of the country. Can't say the same for northern cities. He should have spent longer on ole miss (not "old" miss). And as far as Ole Miss, we won #2 party school in the nation again this year. Hotty toddy.

  • WTF are the kids going to say? "I like candy"; "Pokemon is the best". Man are you an idiot.

  • I love Al Jezerra and Journeyman pics. This is so much beyond the usual Hollywood, Washington DC, corporate paid for word! Bravo for true independance. Down with the propaganda networks and the sameole.

    Thank you for this.

  • LONG LIVE THE CONFERACY!!!!!

  • Haaha, yer right buddy. The south In America is synonymous worldwide with racism at its zenith as well as too much pride and too little education. Dumb ass rednecks.

  • You've obviously never been there then, dipshit.

  • Oh cointreau, Ive been and it disturbs me how many churches their are in the south. Reminds me of the middle east. Any who, don't be angry at me cause yer grand pappy had a shot gun shoved up his ass by the northerners. Sour grapes.

  • That would be stupid. The non-SOuth was just as "racist", but in a different way. The education of the North was also little more than preparing the young for life in an office, or factory. Consume and, spend.

However, it's interesting that to this day, the Southern states have a far greater percentage of black people living there than in any other area of the US.

  • I agree. If it was so bad, they would've left. No one was stopping them.

  • Closed minded bigot, just because you watched a video doesn't mean you know anything about the south. The civil war was over 200 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Claiming that everyone who lives in the south is a redneck is as ignorant and stupid as claiming that everyone who has a dark shade of skin is a nigger.

  • Haha, Ive been their and from what I say most people were uneducated bafoons and about as extremist as Iranians when it came to religion. Everyone in the south may not be a redneck but they sure are ego inflated hypocrites.

  • long live the union.

  • great vid! thanks!

  • Beautiful video; great documentary of a disappearing art...a crying shame! Thanks for the share James!

  • Good video, thanks for uploading!

  • Great music & photography!

  • tut tut tut incest

  • fabulous video wonderfull blues music, thankyou for an insight into the southerners life, from this side of the world. - val.
