French is also very expressive and beautiful, and to hear it sung is amazing. Also, because this is the original production, none of the casting is based on reputation of the part or starpower or anything, they simply chose the BEST THERE WAS. And they got it.

@bangbangmrwang La version originale restera toujours la meilleure et la plus extraordinaire (la version anglophone je parle et non le concept original français de 1980 qui est douteux) mais pour une histoire se déroulant en France et étant si significative pour ce peuple, venant du père de la littérature française, Victor Hugo, je crois que c'était essentiel d'en faire une version francophone.

If you go to the wikipedia entry for Les Mis (musical), then translate the page to the french entry it has all the details from this 1991 revival. Albeit in French but the cast is there.

Je crois que la première version date de 81. A l'époque on chantait dans la cour de mon école primaire la chanson de gavroche sans savoir d'où elle venait. Je ne l'ai découvert qu'au début des années 2000 en achetant un 33 tour.
Si nous voulons toute l'histoire il vous faut les deux version française. La plus ancienne commence au pénitencier, de valjean, alors que la deuxième commence directement avec la chanson "Quand un jours est passé"

I'm Italian, and I know very well the English version. But French...it has a musicality so...moving.

I thought the French lyrics would be better than the English ones, but oddly, they're not. They sound even more forced to correspond with the music.
The music itself is awesome, obviously.
I really think the anglophone casts (especially London) brought this musical to life, even though it's the French who wrote it.

Je suis tout à fait d'accord.
C'est un signe positif d'un bon spectacle quand on peut le chanter dans n'importe langue et il a quand même l'air bon :-)
