@ECST4C Listen to Death Cab and especially Dntel, these artists are no strangers to dark and depressing music. That concept informs the rest of their work as I see it. This song fits in very well with the album.

I recommend listening to The Dream of Evan and Chan by Dntel if you want some creative context.
