When the UK said it could not allow that trade agreement to be conditional on soverignity it was at that point Argentina backed out. There is no proof that the Falklands were inhabited by anyone before 1690.
Britain claimed the Islands, named after Viscount Falkland, and left signs on the Island advertising this fact.
Britain did leave the islands for a period which allowed the French, Spanish and Argentinians to illegally occupy British territory. The British Ambassador in Buenos Ares protested all of these landings as did the British Government. The Americans ejected the Argentinians and the UK retook them.

When the UK said it could not allow that trade agreement to be conditional on soverignity it was at that point Argentina backed out. They wanted to effectively manipulate and black mail the UK into giving up the wishes of the islanders and it was a resounding NO WAY from the UK.
