watching this 6 years on - its still a case of seeing what you want to see. im a lankan supporter and ill say it looks out. an aussie supporter will look at it and say that there's inconclusive evidence. meh, thats cricket - only way we'd know for sure is if there was a super slow-mo camera available. however i do agree with one of the comments below - if a guy demands that the batsman take the fielder's word when he's in the field, yet doesn't do the same when he bats, he's a spud.

Actually it seems nothing carries if you look for close catches in TV replays ...it always seems to be bouncing ...even though in some cases it is a genuine catch. Which I guess then only a catcher would know, unless he is a Clarke or Ponting ?

The replay is inconclusive. Many replays show the ball may have bounced just before so ponting had every right to stand his ground. The umpires were not sure and even richie thinks it didn't

This is not cheating in the slightest. Inconclusive video footage. In the current DRS system it would probably remain not out as they give batsmen the benefit of the doubt, or keep the umpire's original decision in tight situations like these.

The issue here is Ponting not asking if the catch was taken. If he thought he may have been out, then he's a hypocrite for not asking. But for all we know, he could have thought he was definitely not out, so didn't ask.

Even if he did get his fingers under it, I think that at least some part of the ball would have touched the ground, so therefore not out.

This is the same Mark Benson who gave Ganguly out in the infamous Sydney Test in Jan 2008 on Ponting's word. I'm sure Rob has that as well. In any case, it was a classic case of double standard by RT Ponting. He can claim to be a great batsman, but unfortunately not so good as far upholding the spirit of game goes

No other international captain agreed to this, so he simply went along with the status quo and waited for the umpire to make a decision. If Atapattu had agreed to Ponting's suggestion before the series, he would have walked. The Sri Lankans only had themselves to blame in this instance.
