watching this 6 years on - its still a case of seeing what you want to see. im a lankan supporter and ill say it looks out. an aussie supporter will look at it and say that there's inconclusive evidence. meh, thats cricket - only way we'd know for sure is if there was a super slow-mo camera available. however i do agree with one of the comments below - if a guy demands that the batsman take the fielder's word when he's in the field, yet doesn't do the same when he bats, he's a spud.
NO CHEATING, (coming from and Englishmen) just bad camera work meant they didn't know so couldn't say if he was out or not therefore 'not out'. Just like in any game.
Actually it seems nothing carries if you look for close catches in TV replays ...it always seems to be bouncing ...even though in some cases it is a genuine catch. Which I guess then only a catcher would know, unless he is a Clarke or Ponting ?
@spookavision At the SCG in 2008 against Ganguly was given to Clarke in similar fashion, everyone said it was not out, so I'm guessing anyone who thinks that was out, should think that is out as well, otherwise they are just biased.
@bulltiger18 Just looked that one up - doesn't have the same side-on view as this one but yeah probably out. Not sure why you think I'm biased, given I'm Australian. Some of us call it as we see it.
@spookavision I wasn't calling you biased, I was saying anyone who thought one was out and one was not out, I would call biased, but since you're an Aussie and thought both were out, you're not biased, I was kind of directing it at the Indians
The replay is inconclusive. Many replays show the ball may have bounced just before so ponting had every right to stand his ground. The umpires were not sure and even richie thinks it didn't
u should probably change the title rob, i mean it clearly didn't carry, therefore ponting was not cheating, and even richie said it was not-out. Richie is always right. Don't listen to tony greig he's a boofhead who's often wrong
fingers are underneath the ball and its out. listen to what Tony Greigh says.1:40. Pontin cheats more than your momma. type Pontin cheating on youtube and you'll find many videos. No spirit, no cricket . Typical aussies !
As a Sri Lankan fan I have nothing against Ponting staying and I don't think hes cheating. But one I hate about Ponting is that he always expect others to walk and in these kind incidence.
I admire Ponting as a player and captain. But he always whinges that the batsman should take the fielders word when his side are on the receiving end yet he himself never walks!
Rob this is shite. You aren't doing us Aussies any favour by uploading these shitty arse videos. Indians are just going to use these videos as weapons to attack on us. And how the fuck is this cheating? He thought it wasn't out and so he didn't walk? I don't really think that's cheating?
This is not cheating in the slightest. Inconclusive video footage. In the current DRS system it would probably remain not out as they give batsmen the benefit of the doubt, or keep the umpire's original decision in tight situations like these.
The issue here is Ponting not asking if the catch was taken. If he thought he may have been out, then he's a hypocrite for not asking. But for all we know, he could have thought he was definitely not out, so didn't ask.
It is not cheating but then remember what ponting always say? if the fielder says he caught it then the batsmen is to walk. Looking at the replay i feel the fingers were well underneath the ball.
@vindaisatossermini2 They are cheaters from every county's point of view. Its part of their of their sporting culture I think, and that is because THEY PLAY TO WIN.
@H3nDrY147 Well, I think that others' comments have justified my opinion. In my mind, it quite clearly bounced a couple of centimetres before bouncing up high into the hand. Even if he did get his fingers under it, I think that at least some part of the ball would have touched the ground, so therefore not out.
This is the same Mark Benson who gave Ganguly out in the infamous Sydney Test in Jan 2008 on Ponting's word. I'm sure Rob has that as well. In any case, it was a classic case of double standard by RT Ponting. He can claim to be a great batsman, but unfortunately not so good as far upholding the spirit of game goes
@poobodh As pointed out by Tony Greig, Ponting tried to get other captains to get their teams to take the fielders' word on any catches like this. No other international captain agreed to this, so he simply went along with the status quo and waited for the umpire to make a decision. If Atapattu had agreed to Ponting's suggestion before the series, he would have walked. The Sri Lankans only had themselves to blame in this instance.
@Swannerator - I was more referring to Mark Benson, and to the contrast between this incident and the Sydneygate, where there was a role reversal, Ponting gave "HIS WORD"
@poobodh If you're referring to the incident in (watch?v=7L_LkGtXsgs), then Ganguly was given out by Benson. So the decision was out of the hands of the fielders and the batsman Ganguly, as it was given by the umpire.
@Mummify00 - I'm not getting into that carry/ did not carry argument at all. I was just pointing out the umpire and player involved in this incident - Benson and RTP
