  • Radioshack is overpriced bullshit. Screw you. :DDDD

  • also i think you could use a more reflective material like a plastic or a metal dish for better results

  • SKIP the radio shack ads 2:24

ad starts at 2:13 ends 2:24

    thumbs up!!!

  • nice, but who is going to hold an umbrella to listen louder?

  • nice intro

  • light the chimmeny 2:50

  • can i order parts to lituhania to construct that cool things

  • Epic

  • oh yeah, one more thing: you can't beat the price but you CAN beat the cost-perfomance ratio with a few dollars more and a waaaay better sound quality by using a metal salad bowl instead of the umbrella ^^

  • kipkay, you're the best! of course, you do realize what you make available for us with your clips, don't you?

  • at the start you looked like a div lol..

  • what if the bird got closer when you recorded with the parabolic mic? ;)

  • do you think homeland security uses these

  • real smart- bash the quality of the sponsor's microphone- after you told everybody where you got it...

  • @swimmerB0B I think he meant better quality Mic from the sponsor

  • gather round kiddies

  • Metal Shaft...

  • There should be a sub-playlist for all the great audio/video recording mods that he's put on here, for low-budget wannabe filmmakers like myself (also really liked the headrest camcorder mount). I seriously wanna try something like this myself very soon.

  • this is great

  • is this like spy megaphone hack?

  • i hate those radio shack ads!!!

  • I don't think that he will use it only to record the birds

  • OUR CHIMMNIY U SAY

    (lol spelled wrong)

  • Gaffer's tape, perfect for the person who makes frequent mistakes.

  • See those weird optical illusions with the umbrella

  • I bet this would work well with a wok. I have a wok from the thrift shop I was going to use for a wifi antenna. I may have to try using it as a parabolic mic.

  • the bird was singing in the air tonight the second time

  • I don't suppose this will allow you to hear through a glass windows, would it?? Like in the movies.

  • ppl next dor prolly think hes a fucking idiot!!!!!!

  • at first i thought this was jurassic park!

  • the radio shack site is offline =/

  • Too many double entendres!

  • This guy is awesome!!!

  • If you need the real thing. Try a Telinga parabolic microphone.

    This is Fake.

If your listen to the comparision, the one WITH the parabolic thing got more hiss and noises.

Meaning: They just turned up the volume.

    Nice try.

  • @Linda25swe Did you make one?

    Probably not...

  • that isn't gaff tape

  • u remind me of god...

  • @WirSindRocker Dumbass, the whole point of this video was that the Parabolic Microphone would capture MORE sound -_-

  • Was that file a sparkler? And those headphone the Howard light ones you made before?

  • I'm not a native english speaker but I would like to know what is the thing with him saying "shaft"...

  • @kaum it means PENIS

  • @kaum it means penis or dick

  • Its Fake.

If your listen to the comparision, the one WITH the parabolic thing got more hiss and noises.

Meaning: They just turned up the volume.

    Nice try.

    -.-

  • haha..... he said shaft. :p

  • Attach this parabolic microphone to a painter's pole, and you got yourself a boomable parabolic microphone which could be useful in shooting a video.

  • The dish needs to be a rigid as possible to reflect the sound. Thats why the pro version is made of lexan. The fabic will absorb sound waves.

  • This video is powered by Radioshack?

Oh, well at least there was no lies this time. The Mic came from RadioShack.

  • awsome

  • What happens is that the fabric on the umbrella is virating and the microphone is catching those vibrations.

  • I'd like to bring that to a concert

  • hahaha so inconspicuos

  • @dominic14061995 heh heh. I tried that. what, mom? my cow go to the mirror flopper? oh, time to go to the hearing doctor. bye!

  • i tries this with a cheap pilipc microphone i have with a 25w amplifier.. microphone is way to unsensitive tough so didnt work at all

  • lol, Kip-Spy-Kay...

  • Coool :)

  • I'd like to see him use a real parabola, instead of a dollar store hat that is similar in shape. The whole basis that the amplification works on is in the parabola being...err..a parabola.

  • id put foil tape in here or something

  • are those the same headphones that are those soundproof ones?

  • i dont need a mic i use my ninja stealth and hearing powers to spy

  • @zker666 DIPSHIT!!! ...dumbass

  • @SuperToto5 y call him a dumbass when you're probably cant do any of the things he can?

  • dude...I could totally see this in like, a 007 movie or something...guy in a Ghillie suit in the jungle who whips one of these out and listens in on the badguys...

  • where can I buy YOU!?

  • i love the tune at the begining of these vids thumbs up if you agree

  • yeah, 500th video from makemagazin!

  • @Mooohrhuhn no its not

  • that umbrella also camoflages u while u hide in the bush's outside that hot girl in ur classes house

  • the dollar store where i live charges $1.62 for the umbrella hat.

  • awesome

  • set a fire on in the chimney the bird will fly away!

  • @spongebob1872 or he had roasted bird for dinner.

  • "use a file to clean that hole up" hahaha

  • I looked like 1:30 minutes at the umbrella thingy, but only at the end I understood the shape :D. it totaly visualy mindfucked me :D.

  • sup

  • If you're wondering where exactly to place the microphone - then measure the diameter, W, of the parabola (in this case, the umbrella) and the height, H, of the parabola, at the center. Place the microphone (W^2) / (16H) from the vertex of the umbrella. Voila!

  • sad mp3 lol

  • parabolic surface needs to be solid kip not fucking flexible like fabric.. it needs to be plastic or metal that dosent vibrate when sound hits

  • 3:38 fucking optical ilusions i can't tell wich side is the umbrela

  • @scoverzi wow yea

  • Comment removed

  • i wish my dad was like kipkay.. (hes a builder and he has heaps of tools and electronics but thats not bad)

  • Kip kay just slamed his sponsor, Radio Shack, by suggesting viewers get a better quality microphone.

I agree with Kip Kay. Don't bother with a overpriced piece of crap Radio Shack microphone.

  • sweet Parabolic mic thingy :D::D

  • shoot the bird withe the spudgun! 8D

  • how do you know if its a true parabola and if so how do you know where the focus is?

  • HAHA you said shaft :)

  • Me too, i will try this using a behringer B2 mic and a big umbrella...we will find out

  • make a shotgun and blow up those pesky birds

  • nice and cool

  • get a ginormous satelite dish and a studio mike, now you can hear all the terrorist's plans LOL

  • yay for zip ties

  • yay for zip ties

  • hehehehehe... shaft...

  • u r awsome

  • i have those headphones. are they the $300 or the $80 ones.

  • @freakin1random im thinking the 80 lol

  • that's dumb I heard the bird louder before he even recorded it with the mic thing.

  • He would be the BEST dad ever :D

  • my mp3 doesn t have mic input =[

  • Its a y=x^2 microphone!

  • beginig lol!

  • THREE INCHES UP THE SHAFT YOU SAY?

  • @dustin12388 In my case you hit solid air then ;)

  • here we go use a shootgun mic instead

  • kipkay is really up-to-date

  • Anyone know what mp3 player he's using? It's too blurry to discern the manufacturer/model. It's damn difficult finding an mp3 player with a mic jack. Any ideas?

  • maybe a good old ngage :P, although it uses one small size than standart 3.5mm jack.

  • @trollthief

    It's an old iRiver.

  • well if your mp3 has a "record" feature then just put the mic in the headphones thats what i did and it worked

  • seems like the mic is mounted too close...you'd have to measure the angles of reflection from various parts of the 'brella, then figure out exactly how close to put it...3 inches is probably about half of what it needs. (that's what she said)

  • The umbrella fabric will absorbe the sound. You want the sound to reflect off the walls and into the mic.

  • FAIL!!!

  • no need to get nova. simply get your beach umbrella from your garaz

  • I would like to attempt this on a MUCH larger scale to see if it would work.

I'm talking patio umbrella, with a highly reflective material overlaid, with a studio mic attached to it.

  • @Yourebuying ...dang....

  • @Yourebuying See if you can hear aliens with that.

  • There used to be a guy that was hired by the government every so often. His specialty was using large parabolic microphones to hear conversations at a distance.

With a 10 foot dish and an ultra high gain low noise amplifier that had tunable filters that allowed different voices to be tuned in or made louder similar to being able to tune in different radio stations he was able to record human voices out to a distance of 1.6 miles or more under favorable conditions.

  • @Yourebuying

i bet that would have better results then this video

  • @Yourebuying if you're gonna go for it, choose a better parabolic shape than an umbrella... for example, you might as well make it by cutting pieces of wood to parabolic shapes, arranging them in a flower petal pattern, and overlaying your reflective material on that.

  • @Yourebuying now that would be bad ass

  • @Yourebuying If you've got a couple hundred dollars lying around, do it.

  • @Yourebuying i did this a while ago with a rely old microphone but with like a 15 foot satellite dish and silver paint

  • @Yourebuying u wanna spy alien communicate ??

  • intro fail

  • he said "clean the hole" lol

  • @bug6819 You're Beavis or Butt-head?

  • He is Butt head. Cos he likes holes.

  • its ned from south park 0:00-00:29

  • this one is not fun.....

  • Very cool, but it would be better if it could be collapsed again for storage.

  • lol about three inches up the shaft

  • like a satelite

  • this whole project was 4 abt just 5 bucks...

    nice

  • hahahahaha imagine this guy being your next door neighbor

  • @salasrcp90 i would chill with him so much

  • i wish radio shack was in the UK

  • FUCK, He's got a gun! ah, ah no, is just a Parabolic Microphone in the shape of an Umbrella... but hey, it works...

  • hehe nice video :)

  • i wonder what his neighbors think about him...

  • They must be thinking "Damn, I wish he'd make me cool stuff like he does for the internet"

  • @willistennis55 i dont think he has anyone anymore...

  • @willistennis55 dont we all?

  • @willistennis55 They probably give him a call whenever they need some kind of gadget or spaceship.

  • @willistennis55 they probably all moved away

  • @willistennis55 all his neighbors probably have moved away by now

  • @willistennis55 i am his neigbor lol cool

  • @willistennis55 they think, "oh shit.. its friday!"

  • When I built this I opted to use my dremel to create shallow channels in the rod at the back and the front of the umbrella and then used the zip ties. I found this to hold the umbrella in place better as opposed to simply having the zip ties rest on the smooth barrel as they could still move along the length of the bar.

  • that cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think he shoulda tried a parabolic metal bowl, that seems like it would've worked better.

  • he could add some aluminium foil :)

  • everyone just shut up its a 5 dollar thing just have fun with it if your looking for a professional one buy it

  • actually, now to think about it, another variable is the type of fabric you use. Some fabrics absorb sound too. My guess would be the harder the material, the better it would reflect sound to your MIC.

  • I agree with walperstyle

My guess if u layered the entire back of the unbrella with that tape

you may get a few extra dB sensitivity

"that would probably also reduce wind noise common to para-mics"

  • Who said I cant beat it?

    I'll just use a bigger one :D

    Rate this -1 for kipkay!!

  • hey how do you calculate the focus of a parabolic object??? do we take the side view and perform geometrical measurements or is there another way

  • in this case the fastest way is to move the microphone while a test sound is in front of the parabola, you will hear the "sweet spot" with your headphones.

    "sweet spot" = better sound

  • I'm thinking like ok... so so

  • Plus, you would have to calculate the focus of this "dish" to get the best sound from it

  • @cincyghosthunter generally look at sound as if its like a single beam (even though its not) and then you figure out the angle it bounces off the fabric. Its a rough guess, but in the case of that umbrella, it was a few inches up is where the majority of the sound waves will bounce.

I'm sure there is some physics behind it, but With the tools you have access too, you don't need to be hardcore specific. Half inch difference either way wont make much of a difference.

  • How much costs that mic you've used?

  • Id guess about. 12$!

  • if you mount a dollar store lazer pointer to the mic, maybe you can pin point the sound better.

  • Just use the laser as a mic. It'll work better!

  • I'd love to see a DYI radio telescope using those old-school huge satelite dishes.

...or you could cheap out and use one for a super mic I suppose

  • An umbrella will make a lousy parabolic mic. The fabric will absorb a lot of the sound, rather than reflecting it. You want something rigid really. A satellite dish should work, or possibly a suitable bowl.

  • a wok would work to wouldn't it?

  • Should do yeah.
