  • Very interesting, I am a beginner in learning Japanese so I am not ready for all these variations!

  • Great video !! ^ ^ lmao the end is so funny XD

  • You should've made a song from your ums and uhs. xD

  • LOL this is both funny and interesting

  • I'm learning like crazy here.

I'm talking about you to all the guys interested in Japanese I know.

  • Hey neat, YouTube bumped me over to your videos from Tofugu. Loved the ums at the end, and a lot more previously, or I wouldn't have watched that long. Any tips on how you do your editing?

  • omg, I LOVE your stylist! hahahaha

  • At the end you sound like Grunty. Does anyone know what that is from? XD lol

  • Strange, you got not many subscribers and views, but this is very interesting.

  • @Raessentia Story of my life? Ha ha. Thanks for the compliment.

  • @DeasTube Well that's +1 for you ! I'm subscribing :3

  • in chat rooms i often see japanese people shorten konbanwa and konnichiwa to just kon but im sure thats probably just as bad as people saying lol in engrish annoying as hell.

  • Hold a camera in front of your face, speak in a foreign tongue and walk through a grocery store....in my area...that sounds like a good way to get jumped as soon as you leave the store. O_O otherwise I would totally do that xDD

  • I heard someone in an anime shorten こんばんは to ばんわ

  • Try Naughty women and success your life benaughtyman.info

  • A convinient word "doumo" (どうも) for various purpose in Japan.

  • Nice vid! subbed!

  • このビデオは僕のような日本語の学生のためにとっても便利ッス。 あざっす!^_^

  • Comment removed

  • i dont understand how other languages exists. English ftw..

  • A a a um a So ssu.

  • That joke was cold, but I lol'd XD

  • this was a good video

  • very informative. thanks!

  • Incase I didn't notice? Well, funny you should say that, I didn't notice, you guys all look alike.

  • Thank you for posting this. I've seen some of these examples while watching Japanese TV/ Movies and was wondering what they were saying.

  • i almost want to make a song out of your umms

  • Great video, really helped clarify some things for a current student of the Japanese language (such as myself), Thanks!

  • wow - you're very good in explaining things and keeping the video interesting by walking around outside and introducing verious people to the viewer.

    i like it!

  • It's like people who abbreviate March. lol.

  • If people think you look odd by walking around with a camera, why are you doing mundane tasks?

  • the end was awesome

  • I love how people enjoyed that so much when it was just an afterthought. I was embarrassed by how many ums and ahs I let out, even in the edited version, so I decided to make fun of myself. Apparently, that is GOLD on YouTube. Ha ha.

  • LOL

    uh,uh,um...

    sounded like music XD

  • "uh um" is a beautiful song haha

  • "Gakusei desu" XD can I ask why you chose to use "I'm a student" in this? SIDE NOTE:some of my friends got confused by "desu" so just in case other got confused by it "desu" means "is,am,or are" roughly. Plus there are other forms "Deshita" means "was" "Deshoo" is

"is probably" and "datta deshoo" is "was probably" those are all the possitives for people who got confused ^_^ sorry Deas thought it was a good idea to explain that

  • I just used "gakusei" cause it's a fairly common noun? And I didn't go through to explain the copula, because in order to shorten it you already need to understand what it is and how it works grammatically.... ;-)

  • Sou deshou sore wa

I'm studing japanese and i tend to come across people that always when using romanji spell words like deshoU with an o instead of a U. do you write it inhiriagana the same way. I learned to use a U instead.

Kedo, I understand why though, just checking. Because most word searches do as well.

  • ok, well in romanji both ways are sufficient in my view atleast I just prefere to double the vowel seeing it's supposed to be doubled. Oh and as for is "u" ever used in hiragana yes a "u" is used, however in katakana you use a line pointing in the direction your writing to double the sound before it in length. It's used in my real name Ko-De-I-I after the first "i" the line would come and act as the second "i". I hope I helped.

  • thanks for making~ I get so confused when it come to abbreviations @_@

oh and I was surprised to see a random clip of dragon zakura xDD <3

  • so funny! i am originally from hakata area and love your video!

  • Thanks very much!

  • great. it's interesting to watch, good information.. but still.. it's quite hard to spell the shorter form of ' ohayo gozaimasu' uhh..=_=..

    thnx.^^

  • I've been trying to find an explination for all of this forever! ありざいますっ!

  • No problem! Glad to be of service.

  • GREAT VIDEO! Educational and funny xD.

  • Thanks! Glad you liked it.

  • Haha! One whole syllable saved :3

  • awesome video, it helped me out alot

  • when i first saw this i was like holy crap tofugu got old and really diffrent looking (no offence deas)

  • Ooouch! (Trying not to take offense...but man that stings. I'm like 2 years older than Koichi, tops.)

  • sorry! but great vid i like your stuff

  • Awesome video! It was funny, entertaining and educational.

I love how you cut the scenes haha

    I'm glad I subscribed. (:

  • It's harder to find a better, more flattering comment than that! Thanks very much!

  • wow great video! lol

  • Hi, Good video! I like that. Doomo arigatoo! :) I like your style.

if you're absolute beginner, pls watch my video too ;)

  • I think what they are saying is oss, we say it at karate when someone enters the dojo. The first character means "to push;" the second means "to suffer." so: to push to persevere, kinda. Generally its a sign of respect and recognising of someone's arrival.

  • Great video!

  • "It's like people who abbreviate March." teehee~ that made me giggle. This video was fun! AND helpful~ Can't wait to see more!

  • Definately one of the most educative videos I've seen lately! Favourited! ^^

  • thats probably the most interesting vid ive watched lately XD

  • Oh wow. This is really impressive. Not only do you know your stuff, but you clearly took your time trying to spice things up and make it interesting for us. Thank you a lot. ^^

  • Thanks for the kind words.

  • entertaining!

  • didnt notice you said uhm so many times lol :p

  • Hah, WOW. Funny and educational! Great work man!

  • Thanks! Ha ha ha. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Great Video!

  • Great ending! ^_^

  • this is great thank you haha. i visited japan last year and looking back, this is one of those things i should have looked more carefully at and miss much, just the dialect of the people i spoke to and how every little thing was shortened even if it really didn't need to be.

another one of those "ソース things is when someone tells you to まわす、or まわして

the plate or something you're sharing, simply take the plate, put it on your finger, and まわせ!

    have fun. haha.

  • cool vid! make more!

  • A short version of Konbanha doesn't exist, surprisingly enough. The first version of Ohayougozaimasu in which a young teacher says is actually Ohayougozaimasu, but just in faster way.

And Ossu is a shorter version of Ohayougozaimasu. They are the same word.

  • awesome vid! added to my favorites! :)

  • Yay! Thanks a lot!

  • Wow, I have to say, that the "Uhm Uh remix" was really nice :D

  • I liked the uhs and uhms!

  • Hi,tofugu how are you? oh....sorry....Deas.

by the way ,what were you doing in Imabali catsle? you resemble kouichiben for no special reason....

but do'nt worry ....getting older and older ,you'll resemble "gimmeabreakman"!!!

    so,he 's a nice guy.right?!

    i like him. それじゃ ばいばい!

  • Haha. This video was highly entertaining. Good work.

  • 本当におもしろい!よく使いませんでしょうが、もうよく分かりますね。あざっす。

  • Sweet vid. Thank you!

  • Hmm, interesting. I'm trying to learn a bit of Japanese myself and I can ask my Japanese friends about these.

  • i am totally subscribing to your channel (thanks to Tofugu)!

Your videos are very helpful (and funny) for someone learning Japanese and hoping to either teach/study there in the future.

    Are you part Japanese? :D

  • Thanks for subscribing, and for the compliments. I'm not part Japanese, though. I'm 100% American mutt. :-)

  • Isn't that nai-form not dic.-form for "wakarimasu"?

  • Yeah - I guess that's true. (I've never referred to it as nai-form, though. Just the negative casual / negative dictionary form.) Good catch.

  • How much was your haircut, by the way?

And I can't help but to be reminded of Ken Tanaka's similar video.. Except.. It was probably a lot less helpful than this one. 良くできました!

  • I get a student discount since I'm a teacher (and buddies with my stylist), so it's only ¥2500. Quite a deal since it's not one of those 10 minute haircut places.

Yeah - I laughed at Ken Tanaka's video too. But once the First Kitchen abbreviation came up, I could see where it was going...funny, yes, but you're right - not particularly informative. Glad you enjoyed the video! I appreciate the comment!

  • Hey, you're not eating nor drinking in this video.. hehe

Great video. I really like the way you put it together. In junior high, many of my girl students actually said おっす. Either it was a new trend or they were a little special. Haha.

  • It's true, I decided to do something other than food for a bit. (And about the girls - I guess it's a case, like so many others, where if you're comfortable with using that particular slang then you can probably use it appropriately...but if not, it's likely best to steer clear. Mimicking the girls using the boy slang would probably still be better than mimicking the boys yourself, though, yeah?)

  • Haha, the "アァー" bits were funny.

  • Yeah - I couldn't help but notice how bad I was at "aaah's" and "ummm's" so I thought I'd poke some fun at myself and cut them all out and line them up together. Ha ha. Good stuff.

  • Yes, good job. Very clever.

I might steal your idea. XD

  • I loved the part when you were getting a haircut! Awesome video, I really like the style.

  • Thanks - ha ha - made my stylist nervous, but I was stoked that he agreed to being in the video. Ha ha ha. He cracked me up.

  • Really awesome video, I enjoyed it a lot :) :)

  • Thanks, Carlie!

  • just found you page and website... great stuff...I pulled like a million kanji from your website.... im here in Kyuushuu..ALTing while studying japanese as much as I can.. Keep it up!

  • Tofugu is Koichi's site. Rocking in Hakata is mine. Both are pretty cool sites. I do try to put lots of stuff on my site, though. Are you studying for the JLPT? People often think I'm in Kyushu, but I'm actually in Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku. Tricky.

  • I was extremely confused by this for a while, since I took classes in Hakata (the Fukuoka one) for a while. Now I've moved north, all the way Kitakyushu!

I particularly like the stylist part of the video.

  • Brilliant. Very nicely done. Looking forward to the post!

We'll be doing one of these too sometime soon, if all goes according to plan..

  • Thanks! (Not sure when the post goes live, though.) :-) Looking forward to your post.

  • Ok - my Tofugu post ought to go live next week, midweek. Sorry for the delay, folks.
