As a society, we have witnessed religion used time and time again as a tool to hinder both social progress and scientific exploration. One of Dennett's focusing points in his explanations for his work deal with the (wrong) idea that belief in God is the only way one can have morality, and that religious belief is the driving force behind willful ignorance of science. Is that really so uninteresting?

Religions share little with that, and if we attribute certain wars to faith-based causes it is many million lives in the hole.
Science is observation-based whereas religion is faith-based, which are essentially polar opposites of a logic continuum. As I see it, religion prepares you for death whereas science improves life. If fear of gods makes you a better person in life I have no problem with it: It's the hypocrite that causes me fits.

The future of religion in the West will become what it is here in Japan, where people have Christian weddings, Buddhist funerals and generally have no opinion of what is true or not, religion, philosophy or anything else. I love Dan Dennett, but I find this particular talk to be rather Eurocentric and arbitrary in that it positions the "nothingness" of Eastern philosophy at the end of the historical timeline.
If religion and spirituality makes a person a more honest, morally guided, decent, respectful and meditative individual, then, good for Spirituality. Remember that not all people have intellectual interests and capacity to understand the "meaning of life" (to reason about their own existence in this World) and need something more "transcedental" and "morally conscientious" to guide their lives. Having something be repeatably measurable assumes you are talking about something ongoing, like a physical law such as gravity. If God say spoke to Moses in a burning bush, there is no reason to suppose anyone could go back to the same bush and "measure" evidence for God. As a society, we have witnessed religion used time and time again as a tool to hinder both social progress and scientific exploration. One of Dennett's focusing points in his explanations for his work deal with the (wrong) idea that belief in God is the only way one can have morality, and that religious belief is the driving force behind willful ignorance of science. Remember that not all people have intellectual interests and capacity to understand the "meaning of life" (to reason about their own existence in this World) and need something more "transcedental" and "morally conscientious" to guide their lives. @lizardstyle101 You are misunderstanding the meaning of the concept of "evidence". Evidence is something that can be positively tested (read: measured) and falsified by anyone over and over again. So you have no evidence and no proof. BUT I accept that it does not mean that God actually doesn't exist. Just don't claim to be able to prove God's existence this way, because you can't.

@LunaLind1 sorry to jump in, I would like to just suggest a thought if you don't mind. Having something be repeatably measurable assumes you are talking about something ongoing, like a physical law such as gravity. If God say spoke to Moses in a burning bush, there is no reason to suppose anyone could go back to the same bush and "measure" evidence for God. Yet I assure you, in a world where people see things they want to, I also fully agree to not automatically accept anything anyone says.

That being said, I frankly think you make it seem as though he's an advocate for genocide! Craig obviously doesn't like the thought, and he stated recently that he'd studied the text much more closely and found key facts that make it only an overtaking of land (their goal was to inhabit the land, not to simply slaughter large scores of people)

investigate the work of William Lane Craig and Alvin Plantinga (William Lane Craig is widely considered today's most distinguished Theist philosopher) if you are truly concerned with the pursuit of wisdom. In this I am not stating that William Lane Craig is right, and I am not discrediting Dennett, I am simply issuing a challenge to Atheists: know what you believe, search proofs as well as refutations.

@chaos it is just unreal that people actually try to trot out willie craig as a source of wisdom. he is a buffoon. his assertions are inundated with logical fallacies. and almost everything he says requires the presupposition that it is true, and that his entire line of thought is correct. virtually all of it is simply his musings, not fact. atheism isn't a belief system. we are atheists as a result of reason and science demanding we be. atheism is the rejection of baseless religious claims.

@slyjokerg Good answer, but i'm afraid your logic to be an athiest is unreal. Given for instance, How do we know that the Earth isn't upside down? How do we you know that Athiesm is true? Because a man said it? That's why religion is a force that science can not defeat. Religion was not made by man, it came from God, which is why the Covenant, The Cross of Jesus, The Shroud of Jesus, Saints, the pillar of the 10 commandments still exist today. Why? Because ppl have no faith.

@slyjokerg For example how do you know that you are for sure athiest? Because you think you are. Being Athiest means you BELIEVE that religion is a fake. But to believe something is to mean that you yourself are unsure of that choice. I see Athiests as people who have lost faith. But since you rely on science, does science bond 2 ppl together? does it resurrect ppl? I don't think so. Why? because science doesn't have the power to do so. You are saying that the man who proposes divine command theory - the theory that it was morally good for the Israelites to slaughter Canaanites and drive them out of the promised land simply because god said so is the best example of the pursuit of wisdom and the most distinguished theistic Philosopher. I live in the "Bible belt" of Texas. Here, it is hard to say which is worse to come out as homosexual, or non-theistic. Homosexuals at least get to be some group of girls "gay best friend." Life here is dictated by those who "believe." I at least have a foot out of the closet, but as far as I can project, my family will never know aside from my father perhaps, and dating will always start with the other being allowed to assume that my baptist background still holds true. He mocks religious leaders about admiting they don't understand the fundamentals of their faith, right after implying that scientific experts don't do the same, and that's bullshit! Ask any scientific expert if they understand the fundamental forces and they will tell you they don't! All physics is based on the fundamental forces but not even the experts understand them. @unwinsis Actually the idea of a god or theism is a result of, for of want of a better phrase, 'word of mouth'. We are not born with an inherent theist belief. However the search for answers is most probably a an ingrained motivation. This gap in our knowledge is most easily answered although, obviously inaccurately with theism.

@1980toc Imagine science has answered every question about the universe it possibly can. Then, all atheists on earth built a spaceship and left to colonize another planet, free of theism. I'll bet in only a few generations, religions would begin to sprout up and flourish, even if none of the colonists ever breathed a word about any kind of theism to their children. I could be wrong though, what do you think would happen?
