  • This concept can only be shown to work if there is NO WIND. Your only showing that the wind driving the propeller can move the vehicle, not that the vehicle is driving itself. If you think this is REALLY a true concept then build a stationary device that takes the headwind & drives a generator with MORE energy than from the wind alone. This is essently your concept, more energy than possible.

  • TX, You're missing the point of the demo -- there is no claim nor attempt to prove that the vehicle will move in zero wind. The vehicle is totally *wind powered* and thus will sit perfectly still when the wind is perfectly still relative to the ground. The vehicle simply demonstrates that when the wind *is* blowing, energy can be extracted from that wind no matter the speed of the vehicle and thus the wind can power a directly downwind device to a speed greater than than the wind itself.

  • @davidglover Ok I thought this was a claim as I have seen by others that the vehicle is "Self Powered"

I have seen models used on a treadmill which move forward under the assumption that the prop moves the vehicle, wich spins the prop.

I have to admit that it seems counter-intuative that a prop moving at the same speed as the wind could keep turning and making power. Once it reached windspeed the prop would see now windflow.

    Can you explain that?

  • @Texmurphy51 This only works in wind, the vehicle is pointed downwind the wind pushes the cart the wheels turn that turns the prop, as it goes faster the prop works like a prop on a plane that is flying downwind it turns faster which helps move the vehicle faster, if the wind stops so does the vehicle.

  • @davidglover Yes I get it about the wind but think about it.

If you gear it low, point it into the wind and allow the prop to power the vehicle it should push itself into the wind via the wheels.

  • @Texmurphy51 yes it would but the prop should be changed out for a turbine blade instead, this winter the guys are going to fashion a new blade and turn the vehicle to face the wind - they feel that they will have a vehicle that goes into the wind faster than the wind, so in a 10mph head wind they hope to go over 10mph groundspeed into that wind.

  • @Texmurphy51 you make a mistake thinking the wind drives the propeller, that is not the case, the wind pushes the vehicle, the turning wheels turn the propeller. The is a propeller not a turbine so it works in the downwind not a headwind. The model does work in no wind on a treadmill, climbing a treadmill at fullspeed, search it, all over the youtube. Hope this helps explain it.

  • @davidglover Ok that makes sense. Once the prop is turning the wind sees the entire vehicle + prop and pushes it. The wheels turn the prop causing it to push forward.

Now have you tried gearing it to go against the wind? If you think about it, the vehicle could be turned into the wind, the prop turns the wheels and powers it in that direction. It would be at a reduced speed but its the same idea as you are using going agains the wind.

  • @davidglover I will keep my eye out for the video.

  • guys you have to put vawt wind turbine instead of this one.

  • @spork33

Ok, great. It's really great to see a couple of guys innovating and thinking out of the box enough to be able to disprove so called 'fact' that is often thrown about in the scientific community.

It frustrates me endlessly that a large part of the scientific community spends all their time trying to get their findings to match fact instead of the other way around. OK, rant over :)

    Well done guys. Keep innovating!

  • hit a top speed of 2.86 times the head wind. Use this as a secondary power source and have a turbine inside the car thats hooked up to a alternator for a secondary power source.

  • Hi there. It's pretty amazing stuff you guys are doing! Well done!

I don't know where to leave a comment for the Faster than the wind team, so I'll leave it here...

It looks like the biggest thing is that it takes forever for the thing to get going, so what about having hinged flaps at the back that are open to start off with and just catch the wind, and then as you start moving forward they will eventually blow back and just become a tail on the end. I would draw a picture if I could post it.

  • @MarkWhitfeld

No need to draw a picture. We considered doing exactly that, but decided to keep it simple. We figured we'd have plenty of room on the dry lake bed.
