  • She's gorgeous... it's almost hard to believe someone could be so damn talented.

  • they're terrific and she is just plain amazing :)

  • unbelievable! I love it!!!

  • Such talent....beyond words

  • OMG!!! Judy & Mel this was UNREAL!!!!! I had to watch it again, that note Judy holds is endless.

  • The last 503 view are from me, I keep replaying this video. It is brilliant!

  • I love Judy so much, but that belt was fake at the end, shes still amazing though. Amazing doesnt even begin to cover how much of an influence this woman is on me and millions of others.

  • Poor Monroe and Garland, such talented and fragile creatures, victims of fame and stardom functioning on methylamphetamines and crashing with barbiturates, seconal and alcohol. The unlimited budget of CBS offered Judy a whopping 24M. for a weekly variety show. i remembered this as a kid, she would often do the finale dressed as a clown and it was kind of sad.

  • While visiting Marilyn Monroe's crypt I turned around and noticed Mel Torme's grave stone a few feet away. I catch his daughter Daisy, co-hosting on PBS, and she a spitten' image of her father. Without Mel Torme', no "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" and then we wouldn't have Nat King Cole with us at christmastime.

  • i love judy all drugged out. i know it is bad. but it is so perkey and like when someone does alot of speed and extasy. if u think of it. proably all of them in the hollywood system at that time were all on speed( they were told it is medicine) and that is why they are all so up up all the time.

  • mel tormé is just, the best.

  • Note to acecrumpet: You seem to be quite sure of yourself . . . (I am a pianist and therefore should not, really, wisely challenge your view point). Thank you for the explanation. I deduce that you deem that the long held note at the end was re-recorded ex post. So be it.

  • I just love Mel Tormé, he was so handsome!!!!!!

  • Note to the person who posted this video: What do you mean "is it real?" I guess the man , the long (held) note at the end. Of course, it is real! This is called "circle blowing". It is a common technique for singers and trumpet players. Basically it works by dissociating the activity of the lungs, the nose, the mouth and the diaphragm.

  • @OgerManiak It is possible for wind instrumentalists to use this technique, but not for vocalists and here's why...

Circular breathing works by squeezing air out from your cheeks at the same time as taking a breath from your nose. This works for wind instrumentalists because instrument is external, and is therefore would be manipulated by such a breath. Whereas the vocal chords precede the mouth in terms of the passage of air, so air pushed from the cheeks would never reach them.

  • @OgerManiak The last note was not real - it would be virtually impossible (though it is claimed Farinelli could sometimes do 1 minute phrases without breathing, this is a claim not a fact and Garland was not - to the best of our collective knowledge - a castrato). But thank you for sharing your (wildly inaccurate) "knowledge" of the technique of circular breathing.

  • @damens

Thank you very much for this "kind" mail. In the realm of modesty you sure do not fear any competition!

  • Two Words : Elvis Duran ! But I'm Straight Just Saying.

  • 1:30 - 2:11 is EPIC!

  • man, now that's entertainment! gosh, i love it!

  • RIP Hugh Martin

  • HA! Judy Garland is hilarious!

  • to the end of Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

  • I love it whether even if her holding the note is real or not!

  • I want to say its really her holding the not but its not, just watch her fact and her diaphragm, she even takes a breath during the note, which unless she had mastered inward singing, would interrupt her note. Though beautifully performed by the two Miss. Garland must not have the lung capacity to hold a note perfectly for 41 seconds.

  • @trevora1126

    Does anybody?

  • That's one hell of a supernote.

  • How the hell did she manage to hold that note for soooooo long!!??

  • and she starts to laugh while the note holds steady :P

  • i love how when mel sang the line at 1:00 "i asked her name" judy quietly replied "frances gumm's my name." lol i had to go back and listen to it a couple of times to make sure i heard her right.. cute!

  • @billbuckley1955

good ear...I have heard this numerous times and never caught that!!

  • @plp1964 yeah, the key changed so you coudl tell it was a fake belt, still an amazing performance.

  • @billbuckley1955 lol your so right

  • Everything was real... up to "line", you easily tell it's a recording. (I can clearly hear where she stops, and the audio kicks in).

  • But if you really watch her, it doesn't look like she's breathing at all during that last note. I think it was real

  • Just AMAZING

  • @cocolocof Hey it Mel could sing with Ella, he could sing with anybody. He had an amazing voice all his own. And he didn't like her for a lot more reasons than her rehearsal tendencies.

  • Mel Torme' didn't like Judy...mainly because she didn't like to rehearse ...But with HER talent, she didn't need to ...He mainly didn't like her cuz he was Jealous ...he shouldn't even be singing with her because he Can't...not like Judy ....so many haters and NONE of them could begin to have the talent SHE had ...xo

  • Dont Americans just wanna make ya heart sing!!

  • @nickyact1, aww!~ X3

  • DUH!!! YOU GUYS!!! THAT"S "JUDY GARLAND"!!!!!!!!!! SHE HELD THAT NOTE! She was INFAMOUS for those notes.

  • you can tell the end isn't real, but I love it anyway :L <3

  • when she holds "end of the line" that is DEFINATELY a recording! you can tell EASILY!

  • @maleficentdiva Yep. It's manufactured. That said, you may want to check out Johnny Mathis' live performance of, "Pieces of Dreams," where he holds a note nearly 30 seconds. For the male voice, that's incredible.

From this tape, though, Ms. Garland seems to rival Streisand, Ms. Houston and both Celine and Mariah for the breath control championship. Although, for anyone who wants argue, I'll point you toward vids on YouTube for which I'll argue that Whitney in her prime and Babs are contenders.

  • @lokijordan Whitney Houston ?! Are you joking ?!! To even mention her name with Judy Garland is Blasphemous !! Even Barbra couldn't touch Judy's Vocal Prowess ...Puhleeez ..LOL

  • @PeaceFan1 Whitney Houston is extremely talented. I don't get why it's so awful to rank her close to Judy? They are both amazing :)

  • cum, cum, cum went the penis

shmek, shmek , shmek went the quim.....

  • She is amazing, but its pretty obvious that she doesn't sing any of that final bit with the loooong ass note.

  • Judy was phenomenal enough said

  • Hold your breath for as long as Judy held the note then try it breathing out or singing along of course it was for real,

  • That was from her show on CBS. Mel Torme was one of the writers. She was about 40. She aged so much in the following 7 years to her death. What a talent.

  • I feel so bad for her i mean she had really low self esteem i hope her trajedy became an example for ppl in the industry , because wut they did to her was cruel. Not to mention her evil mother who shoved her with pills , very sad. she needed help and no1 except her kids really gave her help.

  • is she really hold ing that omg if she is i like luv her

  • you can tell whose the dumb youngins here from the older wiser music knowers by reading the comments, yes judy actually held the note! its called talent much of what doesnt barely exist today back then you had to actually know how to sing lipsyncing what next to almost not really done when can we have these good old days!

  • @craziestbxboy Next time know what your talking about before you put dowm a whole demagraphic of people. "dumb youngins" Yes Judy was incredible, but on her last note it was looped you can hear when it kicks in.

  • @archy2frank2 and you feel so compelled to tell me because? are you in that demographic?

  • @craziestbxboy Actually I'm 30 years old and grew up during the hair metal and hip hop era. I've always had a great appreciation for the great talents that came before in music, movies, etc, My favorite actor is William Powell.

  • @archy2frank2 aaa ok great damn im 5 years younger i feel like im in the wrong era i like alot of the legends like mel torme, judy, frank sinatra, dean moartin, bing crosby you get it ;)

  • outragous

  • She looks pretty old. I didn't realized Judy Garland lived that long. Also Mel Torme doesn't look as Mel Torme-esque as he does in the MST3K movie "Girls' Town".

    Can they do Freebird next?

  • i dont like mel torme

  • did she actually hold the note of is it fake?

  • no way that's fake. 39 seconds for one of the greatest voices ever to hold a note? faked? no way.

    Ish

  • Glorious!

  • love it! love her! x

  • Comment removed

  • if that bit at the end is real she is amazing lol

  • He is rapping right here. Mel Was always so cool.

  • @archy2frank2 it's not rapping.. it's called scatting ;)

  • @DeleightofThere actually scatting which Mel was great at, is what Ella was the greatest at. Do be do be do- but fastesr or sometimes slower, and rapping is using actually words that rhyme.

  • lol it isn't really her singing! it's not even supposed to be it's a joke.

  • That was priceless!

  • Oh she touches me when she sings Stop @ 1:13

  • anyone who thinks that was a recording is full of bologna. this is Judy Garland we're talking about - a famously talented woman who could hold long notes. she's not the only one who can do it. there was no need to use "technology" to hold the note, certainly not for a '60s tv variety show like hers. she could sing. end of story.

  • OMGolly GOD..this is it!! Doesn't get any better does it..both Mel Torm & Dame Judy G ...one simply cannot here this reparte with such expression, notes that are held into the heavens, lyrics, improv...MEL TORME doing his stuff while she holds that note...OMG..unbelievable.....THIS IS TRES INCREDIBLE.....these two GODS together...I'm beyond words...Thank you for posting...

  • Wow...

    That was some ending.:0)

    Surprised-

    So different from the original.

    Thanks...

  • @4eva68 - Sweet to think of me! Amazing technology to hold that last note for 35 seconds!! This is the 21st vid on my 'Judy Garland Show 1963' playlist.

5000 songs on my 425 playlists let you listen up to 2 hrs to 300 different artists or genres. 120 more lists let you hear the hits of ANY past year . . . . . . .

Listen as though you've stepped back in time !!!

Thanks to inonemus for posting this treasure !!!

  • that long note hurt me more than it hurt her. IT WAS SOOOO AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • clearly amazing voice of judy garlin...nothing short of fuckin amazing...don't think i ever saw a performance like that.....she went for like two minutes and never changed the teimpo if that is the correct terminology....too bad she died a drug addict/alcoholic....she was a real babe...dorothy

  • shes sooooooo cute at 1:05 when he scared her!!!!

  • you can hear where the note stops and the recording starts... its amazingly clever

  • Ah, it took me a while to remember that a trolley in the US is, in fact, a tram. I was thinking of a shopping trolley in a supermarket. It made no sense whatsoever.

  • @bribold yea, we call it a shopping cart. :)

  • @bribold - hahahah, once again 2 nations divided by a common language!

Actually the song DID make sense. The clanging sound is a now disused early-warning system to prevent shopping trolley collisions in stores. Unfortunately the clanging was SOOOO loud it made the autos in the carparks shake, setting off alarms everywhere. It didn't last but a few days. ;-)>

  • This is superb..... enough said...

  • They actually make a good couple, there's a resemblance. In real life Mel worked on her television show and penned a fairly scathing account (The Other Side Of The Rainbow, 1971) of what it was like to work with Garland. His body language in this clip really conveys his ambivalence towards her.

  • No dubbed notes with Judy. Anyone that knows of Judy knows she was a belter and could hold notes longer than anyone. She did it often and on live TV.

  • @Markey0086

This particular one is dubbed. You can see her laughing during it, and you can hear the awkward transition.

But still, that means she still sang that note before! She sang the 35 second note, recorded it, and lip-synched with it. Either way, she sang a 35 second note! Haha :)

  • @broadwaymelody33 so she did actually record that long note??!! wow thats AMAZING!

  • @Markey0086 hate to burst ur bubble but take a look at 1:30. u can clearly hear where judy's live vocal is overtaken by the dubbed vocal. u can even see her breathing in and out by looking at her stomach during the note. still a neat idea, though.

  • I don't notice it, but it does not matter to me either way. She was known best for holding a note and belting. Was this a note hold? Who knows or really cares?

  • @Markey0086 yea, no big deal. just saying...

  • OMGSH!! how did she hold that note that LONG!! AWESOME!11!!

  • @Kayshmo definitely a dubbed in note at the end there, but still fun to watch.

  • yah. but its still cool! haha

  • That last note is amazing! At least 35 seconds! She was the greatest. Got to love Mel.

  • look for her with the gumm sisters

  • Wow, from 1:30 on, how amazing she was, and what a wonderful performance the two of them gave. Terrific. Thanks so much for posting.

  • ...I got the blues, here's more bad news: this little lady stepped upon my shoes. And now I need a (WHAT? SIGN?). CAN ANYBODY HELP ME to decipher all the WHATs? I'm not a native speaker, therefore I can't catch some of the words. THANKS!

  • He said, "And now I need a shine." As in a shoe shine.

  • Oh yeah! It makes sense. Since she stepped upon his shoes! Tks a lot!

  • I'm trying to figure out what Mel sings when Judy is "holding" the looped note. So far I have: "I got a wife and she's waiting, I'm gonna be in big trouble, cause I forgot to bring home the bread, milk and cheese (what?) What am I gonna do now, with this crazy woman? With her high starched collar, and her high topped shoes, and her hair piled high upon her head... oh boy I'm dead! Like I said! Look out now! (WHAT?) hey hey! (WHAT?) Better help (WHAT?) I'm in trouble now, what am I gonna do?...

  • "cheese and crackers"

"Look out now!" (bunch of scat singing)

    "Better help or Mel Torme"

"And now I need a sigh"

  • tks a lot! u r very nice!

  • lol, its hey hey danny kaye better help poor mel torme, try a little debrox or mineral oil for your ears

  • sorry never heard of danny kaye before

  • milk and cheese and crackers...after the "look out now" there's lots of SKAT singing--he was famous for it (along with Ella Fitzgerald and a handful of others). Brilliant piece.

  • haha this performance is wicked, rip judy, i love ya.

  • what year was this filmed?

  • Oh my god!! I though Judy was gonna die!!! jajajaja

  • love Judy she was the best =)

  • meu deus! judy arrasou!

  • bc judy garland is the bomb lol

  • How does she hold that note? omg

  • it's looped... it was done as a gag

  • if you listen carefully, when she goes to sing "At the end of the LINE", just before the word LINE, you can hear a recording of her voice kick in.

    Very funny.

  • ahaa

  • @BGDVA Good catch. Once I read your comment it was really noticeable.

  • @BGDVA absolutely true! but what did the audience think? did they hear it? hmmm... it's definitely there though. ah well, judy is still an amazing singer even if shes gotta fake sometimes

  • @BGDVA that is not even true

  • @BGDVA lol nooo what about that vain in her neck i think she is holding the note maybe

  • @Jigglesw Umm, because the's cheating, that's what BGDVA was talking about. It's a recording. Still love ya Judy. In fact that might make me love you more.

  • @Jigglesw She isn't. The entire performance is real up until that point though :) This is tv. At the end she even keeps carrying it when it ends. :) Love this performance.

  • I don't care if they was a loop or not, I don't care about the fact that I read they did not get along and that Torme had a massive ego, blah blah blah.

This is such a fabulous rendition of the song. They have chemistry. They look at ease. They improvise.

I absolutely wish my singing were as casual as they both portray here.

    They are amazing!!

  • Fabulous!

  • How they played off each other! What a pair of true old pros. No ego - this fed upon one another. So much more pleasant than the me-me-me "diva" era we are in today. Attention rap and hip-hop music fans: THIS is fast-talking music that impresses me. Listen to Mel Torme. Years of mastering the Great American Songbook. Not the ignorant flatulence of most "rappers".

  • almost 40 seconds she belted out in the end

  • oh

    my

    god!

how long did she hold that key???

  • Holy hell!

  • O Judy (May she rest in piece)

She had the most beautiful voice and the most charming presence

  • Mel Torme looks like Barney Rubble

  • haha. that's awesome! =P

  • wow how many bars is that?

  • I love when Judy sings at 1:13

    ''Stop, Stop...''

    She had a beautiful voice : )

  • my 3rd grade homeroom teacher was a singer and held a note for exactly one minute for us, i'll never for get it!!!!

  • she looks like she is having so much fun here :)

  • ha. i love her, she's amazing! although at 1:31, you can hear a significant change of tone when she says "line." that's what always made me think it was looped when i watched this vid. either way, she is both divinely flamboyant and flamboyantly divine.

  • This is NOT looped. She takes a breath at 1:40 and stops singing at about 2:00, just having her mouth still open but no sound coming out. (And trust me if Garland was singing you'd hear it.) Holding a note for 20 sec. is not impossible (though nothing to be scoffed at either) but it's certainly doable.

  • it can be possible depending

  • It is looped. They probably did it to insure a perfect performance in front of the audience.

  • i take that back, i saw her take a breath at 1:40

  • wow she held that note at the end for 33 seconds. impressive.

  • she's a bloody legend

  • Judy looks VERY well here, and sounds wonderful. Of course the final note is dubbed--it was suppsoed to be jokey "comment "on her ability to hold big notes for real. Torme seems unpleasant.

  • Its definitely looped..... you can tell, Judy even starts to laugh in the middle of the note. But its ok, its judy! She can loop anything if she wants too :) either way, its a really really cute version of the song...

  • it's clearly looped, but nevertheless a very funny effective trick. She doesn't even catch a breath before and she sings a phrase right before that ends with the long note.

Circular breathing works for instruments when you breath the the nose and blow through your mouth. That techique can't be used for the voice since the air has to come from your lungs.

  • Judy knows how to hold a note!

  • You can hear the loop start at 1:31

  • i have my headphones on and all i heard was her vibrato, which is supposed to happen when you sing. i'm 19 and not as well trained as judy and i can hold notes for around 35-40 seconds.

  • It is real. Holding a note for around 59 seconds is really not that big of a deal for acomplished vocalists. Operatic singers in paticular are trained intensly and have extraordinary control of their diagphram. For someone as highly acomplished and extraordinarily talented as Judy Garlands, this is a walk in the park. Only in comparison to todays pop singers like Rihanna and Britney, does this seem impossible.

  • Actually 30 or more seconds is a big deal and one minute is simple unheard of without circle breathing...calling it a walk in the park is quite a stretch!

  • There is a technique called circular breathing, so maybe she's doing that! She is Judy Garland! Who knows! I'm not a singer, but I am a musician, so trust me, it's possible, it just takes alot of practice and talent.

  • its hard to tell i thought when she breathed in the stumbled slightly aha thts aamzing if it is held but hmm maybe 'ill attempt it now see if its possible x

  • i love this version. i love Judy's hair like this, and her make up looks nice too.

  • you can't hold that note, 'cause, of course, none here is Judy garland! She did it without any tick, because her natural vibrate in the voice. and in the other hand, if you see carefully, you can realiza how she breathed again while holding the note!

  • Yeah, I could hear when she breathed but you can hear her take in the breath for just a second while you could also the note.

  • ii love this song!!!!!!!!!

  • HOLY CRAP... that note was like a minuet long wow! she really was little miss leather lungs! AMAZING!!!

  • If you listen closely just as she hits that note, there's a slight difference in it which makes me believe that note was recorded and played on a loop. I don't think anyone could last that long without turning blue in the face...lol :)

  • amazingg!!

    iheartjudy:D

  • Mel did the arrangements for many of the duets and musical numbers on the show. There was a lot of turmoil with changing of producers and format, but the music was classic and Judy, despite her troubles, always came through with outstanding performances on this show. She would've been better served doing 3 or 4 specials a year instead of a weekly show.

  • God what a duet!

  • Boy, that Mel Torme - what a singer!

  • Who might be holding notes like THAT anymore? Anyone?....I thought not. YES, the GREATEST female singer of the 20th and now the 21st century...RIP Miss Garland...You deserve it!

  • she actually hold a note like that during this Duete

  • Not only is the Last note a "Loop" but it's an obvious one, and doesn't quite match the pitch of the opening note - but, it's fun to see, and Judy and Mel were great performers.

  • I always get the impression watching their duets from her show that Mel Torme was always trying upstage Judy but he never succeeded. As great as he was, she was hands down the greater performer of the two in my humble opinion.

  • according to David Shipman one of the biographers Judy was always aware Torme needed to be a smart-ass around her to re-assure himself

He's an OK singer but I wouldnt say "great" Certainly not in the same league as Garland by ANY means

He was much more insecure than Judy because of this and had a huge ego and this comes across

  • Do you know anything about Judy Garland's achievements compared to Mel Torme? (Who no-one has ever heard of?) Torme didnt have anything Like the track record Garland did - musical genius?? who are you? his dad?

NEWSFLASH!! people have different opinions from you!! - grow up and get over it

  • i agree with grai. judy is god in my opinion.

  • did anyone notice at 1:02 when he says "i asked her name"...she says "frances gumm is my name."
