How tough should the ballistic gel be to be a semi accurate analog for human skin?

@SicariusProductions Well ballistic gel is not an analog to skin per se, but an analog to the consistency of human flesh, skin included. National Institute of Justice of US and FBI have specifications (there are free info no top secret) about the right recipees for achieving and calibrating gel blocks to give accurate test results.

But I believe there is a conversion chart that that states that a small number of inches (wich I dont remember) equals superficial skin penetration. Google has it!

@EricsTechTalk Lame? That block would be shot trough by a firearm round, defeating the purpose of ballistic gelatine as measurement.

Also, air rifles are not toys. Just grab some hollow points and you can make yourself explosive rounds, flammable rounds, rounds more appropriate for penetration depth, fill them with poison etc.

A toy would penetrate 3 inches into flesh? In Soviet Russia Happy Meals, alright.

@craveman85 Yes it is, you can carefully re-melt it to remove lead/copper/debris impurities and cast it again under controlled conditions. But It has a limited lifespan since its organic matter and eventually It will decay and lose its properties

His recipe gives a 10,7% solution of gelatine. The original asks for 10% solution.

Ratio: 1:9

1 part gelatine to 9 parts of water (weight measures)

my little brother accidently shot a BB straight through my friends hand

at 750 fps with a .177 cal copper plated steel BB it went straight through an american quarter and the membrane between his thumb and index finger and six layers of fabric with probably enough velocity to go clear through his other hand as well

i'm not saying don't play with BB guns (cause it's fun as hell :DD) just don't shoot your friends or animals or anything you don't want to don't want to injure, kill or destroy

Another bad gel formula.

The ratio used by law enforcement ballistics labs is such.

1 part dry gelatin to 1 part water making it VERY expensive for us. So 1 pound of gelatin to 1 pound of water.

In other words, most these guys showing pellet guns producing LETHAL penetration, would in fact bounce off of us and very painfully so or get maybe an inch of penetration at most.

You can't shoot someone in the chest with an air rifle and penetrate their hear.

Being shot by something going 1000 FPS isn't fun.

Although it wouldn't go through your chest (You have ribs which are made of bone), it would easily go through 2-4 inches of human flesh.

@Matthewboca Pelltes are made of lead.

So as soft as lead is, it's unlikely it would penetrate that depth. Theirs a lot more mass to absorb the velocity.

Something like brass or steel would be needed but would also reach a fraction of that velocity due to the weight difference.

Say say you shoot someone in between the ribs directly in front of the heart, you might get heart penetration but I doubt it.

Yes I know, Ive seen them too, and worse, once I saw an Idiot shooting a squirrel with a 4.5 medium power airgun. All It did was get her angry. And maybe killed her a few days later from a septic shock wound... Stupid stupid.

i have a co2 gun that i just shoot for the hell of it. but i use my 12g for hunting and shit. you can get a 22. for the same price as a bb gun.

don't confuse airguns with airsoft guns, you hunt small game with airguns, stock. Mod it and it can be (proportionally speaking) pretty damn serious.

Mind you, unless that thing avoided cartilage, hit a vital organ and there was no medical help, it probably wouldn't kill... it probably wouldn't kill anyway. The ballistics are pathetic.

Still, that would be one hell of a hospital trip.

Indeed this little pellets have a punch! Ballistics in them sucks, but, talking about hospital trips, I once got shot with one high powered air rifle in my leg and you can bet THAT hurted, and also left a nice hole! Life threatening injuries I think would need very powerfull airguns, heavy pellets and bad luck!

I used the airgun just to test gel consistency: im planning on using some real ordnance but Im still building up enough jelly boxes -.- Stay tuned!

That was the purpose. NIJ grade level gel is tested for penetration with a similar airgun. Federal specification blocks are at least 4 times thicker
