Dracula was actually a title more then a name, it means Son of the Dragon or Son of the Devil depending on the source material, he earned it because like his father Vlad II Dracul, he is beleved to have been a member of the Order of the Dragon, also Vlad's brutally was a result of the hatred he had for his father and his time as a hostage in the Ottoman Court

This movie is very good,like a breath of fresh air in the "Dracula movies"..buuut it has some historical errors as well...they could have done a better work on historical facts.
There's going to be a new film on dracula called Dracula Year Zero, which has a similar storyline like this but it is going to be more bloody than this movie!
I love this film so much, but it doesn't have a touch on the actual historical contexts it takes it's influence from.
It does, however get across the way in which Vlad tepes was loved and did fight for the freedom of his people, which most texts forget and dub him as a vampire or monster, which, in fact, he was not.

@jigoku66 actually the first state of Romania existed since 82+ BC, under the name of Dacia (google for "dacia wiki") but because of so many invaders like Romans or Ottomans the country was divided and fragmented. We still miss today territories from the ancient kingdom of Dacia, like for example Moldova is split in two, half in Romania, and half as an independent state - this was possible because of the Russian scums and their Molotov–Ribbentrop pact. But we will get them back sooner or later.

In the past Wallachia was called in romanian Tara Romaneasca (The romanian land) and in that regard the name Romania was in use in his time but did not refer to the territory of today which is larger than the 15th century area he controlled.

The film doesn't call Romania by what it was called in the past. Vlad died in a bloody battle against the Ottomans. There were no negotiations with the Catholic Church because he was a Romanian Orthodox prince and the faiths didn't mix back then. He was firmly established as voivode before his death.

He was a ruler under constant threat of invasion, and internal-instability was something that could not be permitted during war. Errors: Vlad III Tepes was Prince of Wallachia, not Romania, there was no unified Romanian State. Dracula was actually a title more then a name, it means Son of the Dragon or Son of the Devil depending on the source material, he earned it because like his father Vlad II Dracul, he is beleved to have been a member of the Order of the Dragon, also Vlad's brutally was a result of the hatred he had for his father and his time as a hostage in the Ottoman Court

i saw this on the discovery channel,
Vlad would capture prisoners and torture them. Among many of the tortures, he would make them lay down and have a log sharpened at one end and slowly shove it from the bottom up. So basically it was slowly shoved up the ass, causing everything to be ripped apart....slowly..... and kill you.
While you're being impaled by a log he's watching and drinking blood. Horrible horrible stuff.

I love this film so much, but it doesn't have a touch on the actual historical contexts it takes it's influence from.
It does, however get across the way in which Vlad tepes was loved and did fight for the freedom of his people, which most texts forget and dub him as a vampire or monster, which, in fact, he was not.

@jigoku66 actually the first state of Romania existed since 82+ BC, under the name of Dacia (google for "dacia wiki") but because of so many invaders like Romans or Ottomans the country was divided and fragmented. We still miss today territories from the ancient kingdom of Dacia, like for example Moldova is split in two, half in Romania, and half as an independent state - this was possible because of the Russian scums and their Molotov–Ribbentrop pact. But we will get them back sooner or later.

Romania today is composed of several historical regions(former kigdoms/principalities), the biggest and most important being: Transylvania, Wallachia, Moldavia (the smaller ones are Dobruja/Dobrogea, Banat, Crisana, Maramures, Bukovina).
In the past Wallachia was called in romanian Tara Romaneasca (The romanian land) and in that regard the name Romania was in use in his time but did not refer to the territory of today which is larger than the 15th century area he controlled.

Why is he clean shaven and dressed in leather? More to the point, why is he alive? Vlad was killed in battle by the Turks in 1476...you know what, this isn't worth my scrutiny. There are way too many historical inaccuracies.

@Ryoukawaii Vlad`s cleanshaven because Rudolf Martin ( The Actor ) didn`t wanna grow a full mustache ! Leather`s been around for centuries , it`s only leather jackets that are more recent ! The Film starts with Vlad`s Final Battle and then goes back to show The Events leading up to it !

@1993MovieMan Well, he should have. Leather has been around for a while, but I can guarantee that Wallachian armor was much heavier. Oh look, another historical discrepancy. The film doesn't call Romania by what it was called in the past. Vlad died in a bloody battle against the Ottomans. There were no negotiations with the Catholic Church because he was a Romanian Orthodox prince and the faiths didn't mix back then. He was firmly established as voivode before his death.

Romania today=Transilvania+Wallachia+Moldavia(not the republic, the region)
Vlad was born in Transilvania but ruled over Wallachia(a.k.a. tara romaneasca=the romanian land);
Alongside Stephen the Great of Moldavia and Michael the Brave of Wallachia they represent the greatest rulers of Romania...the holy trinity, the golden trifecta...well i guess there's room for others also, like Mircea the Elder but these 3 are the GOAT(greatest of all time) for us.
