Hail to the King..!!! Yes, this is the man, that I grew up listening to. I'm a child born in the late 60's, and this song was one of the songs I had to listen to every weekend...ALL weekend. I probably knew about "King Curtis" before I knew my own name. Now that I am older and wiser...this song, I now listen respectfully and enjoyingly. Truly, he was a talented and gifted man. Although he lost his life tragically, may he rest in peace.
I have never heard of King Curtis until tonight, but as soon as I heard him play the first note from the sax I got chills that lasted through the entire song.
oh how i love this!!! i had the original record but this live version is soso good. thanks so much for posting. i thank you and all the other people who post these great old soul singers and groups. now i can listen to them anytime and they help me so much when i get down in the dumps. i have cancer and you just don't know how much you help me by posting these great songs!! thankx again!!!
I can't believe , well I can, this is UTube. LOL! I am so glad I found this video. My husband Is a jazz musican here in town, and I PROMISE my husband sound just like King Curtis. After all these years I finally hear who my husband idolized. I've heard him talk about 'King Curtis, and how he got to play with him, but I never realized how much he copied his style . DAMN! that's deep
I just can't stop listening to the live album? My missus keeps steeling to listen to it in the car? What a Fucking collection of wonderful musicians.! Thanks for converting me. I think I've found god or bod or mod or something? Cooler Than Cooooool !
On the Live in Filmore West Album with Aretha Franklin, Aretha said that this was just their first engagement and had hoped for many, many more to come. Unfortunately, King Curtis would die later that year and they only did a few more concerts together. A true GIANT of the soul music! May he forever rest in peace
all you young players take of note.. You can be very laid back and still simmer and cook at the same time. it's not all about how many notes..it's about the flavor and taste of the notes you play..and these guys have it down
Any guitar players?... Starting around 2:26, anyone know the three chords he's hitting and anything about the technique (sliding, etc.) I'm an apprentice player and would love to be able to hammer out that progression. Thanks and enjoy guys!
you are listening to cornell dupree, one of the finest rhythm guitarists ever. it's not about the chords, it's the way in which they are played. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and come back in 6 months, and you'll be able to figure it out for yourself. Check the Memphis Soul Stew clip for more tasty Cornell Dupree.
Truman Thomas, on organ , Bernard Purdie on drums, and yes, CL Dupree on guitar and Jerry Jemott on bass. The Kingpins were simply awesome and King Curtis' untimely death was an obscenity.
Thanks Guitarnut58 - you are so right about the way King Curtis was lost to us - I remeber listening to that sweet saxophone playing on my first KC album 'Live at Small's Paradise' and then reading my way through the sleeve notes and then stumbling across that dreadful paragraph saying how he died in such a violent way - probably over an argument that could have been sorted out somehow - An apalling waste and I think of it every time I watch the vid's. Your guitar playing going well??
that's becaise they asked King Curtis to tour with them and love his work. There are some bootlegs of King Curtis appearing in concert with the Allmans
hi mc garvision what a real treat to hear and see the great king curtis play such a great song. Iam a king curtis nut and i thought i had most of his stuff could you post the name of theses booth legs please and i;ll hunt them down. king curtis what a sax player.
@McGarVision I saw the Allman Brothers live in concert the day after King Curtis died in Richmond, Va. and they declined to play an encore because they were so bummed out about it.

I remember hearing the Live at the Filmore west album and being so moved....dang....Soul Brother...!!!...What a terrible thing to happen to our brother King. A great voice in the Blues world, a real Gentleman.
The guy who stabbed him is out now, going on with his life and trying to pretend he lives in a world where he didn't do what he did. I wonder sometimes if he knows what he took from us all.
No he will not! and that is only one of saddest things about his senseless killing! It falls upon us,those who love and enjoy his music and talent! to keep his memory alive! THE KING LIVES!!!!!!!!!
I'm dying to watch/hear the pieces played in his funeral heard it was a WONDER..everyone was there Brook Benton , Duane Allman,Aretha, Wonder and ofcourse the Kingpins! Does anyone have an access to that please?
Not entirely correct. He was killed while trying to move an A/C into his home. A vagrant was sitting on his front steps and wouldnt move. Words were exchanged, and the vagrant pulled a knife.
Not really,it was a hot day in NYC,he was carrying an AC unit into his apartment, two junkies sitting in the door way blocked him as they were shooting junk, they argued, one stab him in the heart but his light will never go out as long as we remember him!!
My father was one of his best friends... He has every recording ever made and some never released... He was with him the night he was murdered..Morning actually... They had just finished breakfast after a show... I am thrilled to see this posting. It brought tears to my father..who never knew this existed..many thanks..
I know what you are talking about. By far one of the best jams. I usually have a huge ear to ear grin after listening to it. It just makes you feel good.
It sounds like you don't know the difference between mess us and step up. King Curtis and the other great masters rarely play songs the same way every time; especially over the years. Long live live performances!
I can only hope to assume that what you refer to as messing up is what we call re thinking and re phrasing,in a split second, faster than the speed of light.
