1.8ts and 24V VR6s have a lot of recall for bad ignition coil packs... i have a 24v vr6 and I missfire... have to replace them. you can fid some on ECS TUNING
get the hitachi bolt down coil packs and the NGK plugs, make sure they are gapped right especially if your 1.8t is chipped. I did the same thing when i had revo stage 2 on my gli. It sounded like a lawn mower, it was awful
anyone that has a vw jetta 1.8t should know they recently came out with a recall from VW to get new coil packs since the originals were defective. I think they only replace them when they are down tho.
Autozone sells new ones of their brand for $30 each which is cheap for a new coil. Dont waste your time with a used one since they are defective.
@jeTTaTurbO You are right about the coil over recall.. There is one per each spark plug and the bad ones will 'arc over' causing failure and your engine to sound as though it's 'missing' a cylinder. On the 1.8T they are EASY to get to and replace.. Not as bad as most other cars! Just BE SURE to use a TORQUE WRENCH so you tighten them to the correct specification or else you might damage plug or even worse, the threaded housing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@sp33dstr3am yes my vw golf has the same problem and sure enough i had to replace the coil pack. usually if its a standard anyway it will start bucking as u drive and continue to make this noise.
Would the coil pack cause hesitation during acceleration? I'm having an acceleration problem with my car and not sure what it could be. Feels as if the car is giving up on breathing or firing.
Hi mate, noticed you have the 2.0l model, also came in the VW Scirocco of 89.
Having worked on many similar engine in my youth (LOL), head gasket failures are often misinterprited as Coil Pack failures. Loss of performance? Possible poor idle and fuel consumption? Head Gasket.
Are there any oil leaks anywhere on the 'Block?
I would also suggest overhauling the pistons and getting new valves. They sound tappety, ussual cause being a cambelt that has not been tensioned properly. Alas, it is too
If one of you coil pack's is'nt working I would'nt start the car. The piston that is not firing is putting all of the unburned gas into the exhaust and your cat is working it's ass off it will be broken befor long

Don't forget to check the Ignition Control Module! These go sooner than coil packs.

@MakeYourself1987 Yes, my GTI has bad coils and one of the symptoms is loss of power or acceleration. Replacing the coil packs are so easy.

I figured out the problem with my car. It was an easy concept, but not easy to get to them on my engine.

im glad you posted this, it put my mind to ease. Now I know I just have bad spark plugs.

Thank you so much for posting this. I did research and had a hunch that mine went bad, this video seems to confirm my suspicions.
Its also nice that you let us hear the cabin noise and the engine noise up close. Very useful.
