Why on earth would you want to keep stuff on your computer? I tape backup, and forget. Until, that is, I unearth it up. I wonder if JPEG is still going to be used in the future?
I can remember when I was in middle school how we all ogled over 1 gigabyte drives for $500!
My, my, how things do go along.
BTW, have you considered writing your video files onto DVD-ROM? Cheap, permanent data storage that will last you for quite some time provided that you use good quality media, burn at a slow speed to ensure a reliable write, and treat and store these discs like you would vinyl records.
Hi Inter - I've been struggling with the art of 'archiving.' I just recently found out the hard way that burned CD-ROMS are not forever, as digital family photos 'faded' - three CD's I burned became unusable. I did buy a tape backup system, and I am considering a blu-ray burner since they record to a more resiliant substrate. I also have RAID arrays at home to protect current projects. I appreciate your input! - Alfred
Well, the problem with CD-Rs are that some of them are poorly made, particularly discs made in Taiwan or China by companies such as CMC Magnetics or Ritek, which happen to be the majority of recordable discs that are made. These discs are adequate, but some tend to have high levels of BLER (block error) rates and tend to fade, particularly when exposed to sunlight.
I've had good luck with discs made in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. Good discs would be by Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui.
But, lately, these discs are getting harder and harder to find as they are being displaced by cheaper media. You have to order these discs from online sources just to get them or scour retail outlets for discs that are listed as being "made in Japan."
Mele - WOW (and we don't mean World of Warcraft) is right, because in addition to my library of about 50+ tapes, and my sister's 11 tapes, brother Gary has "enough tapes to fill up an Avon box" - scary, probably a lot of tapes. I might as well jus sit home for the next year and edit video! LOL! Thanks for watching - Alfred
Yea, good product. I asked for "Pumpkine Lice" instead of "Spice" as a joke, and they served me a Pumpkin Spice Ice Coffee. Hahah, good interpretation, I guess! LOL! - Alfred.
Alfred, you have a quite impressive amount of mini dv (it looked like mini dv) tapes. That really takes a lot of disk space. I have that strugle myself. See you around and take care ;)
Hey Antonio! YES - lots of content. Perhaps if MTV picks me up, I'll at least have a good base of films to work with! LOL! :) Thanks for watching my friend - Alfred.
No surprise on the blah service at Best Buy. :-) Definitely just stick with removable media and burning DVDs at this point. You'll have a few spindles instead of a server farm full of hard drives. LOL.
Jay, I am now singing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm.." - yes, I gear slutted this morning, and got the 1 TeraByte drive at CompUSA this morning. But you are correct -- I have to put a cap or I will turn my entire apartment into a server room hosting stupid home movies! Thanks for watching and your advice, as always! - Alfred.
Ben, what really sucks is that I wanted to film a comedy clip in the store, but since I did not make the purchase (because I couldn't), it blew the clip idea. I will try again at another store.. You'll see - it will be good. Thanks for watching! - Alfred
Gigs and Gigs...Gad! You can convert me anytime, Alfred! "Bowels"! Hilarious! 70s and hot chocolate in Florida...All you need now is your fake fireplace! Can't wait to see what you are going to post next!
Alfred, are you going to be putting all of these vids on DVD's? I have about 100 beta tapes, of my family, in storage, if you really want a challenge! :)
Joey! Yes, I'll be posting a lot of this stuff. Wow, you have Beta tapes? That's cool as hell. And you know, the originals are called masters. So, they are the Master Beta's -- say it fast. LOL! Thanks for watching! - Alfred
