I lost right arm 10 years ago, i have phantom pain from time to time, but not constant pain, but like sensations, like someone stab me with a knife, and feeling my arm iz numb 24/7. A found some solution that works and eliminate that sensation about 80%. My wife massage the end of amputee with her nails, its a little painfull but more pleasent, every day ot two about 5-10 minutes. I was on neurontim about 3 years, and with this massage i didnt drink a single pill 7 years
@klaywert Like I said I did finally find an over the counter remedy that surprised me. I took a bunch of headaches for migraine tablets that include caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen, after eating 6-8 of them my phantom pain just diminished within 10 minutes, no shit. The only reason Lyrica etc MIGHT work is a placebo effect,. They're antidepressants and have nothing to do with pain relief, they just keep trying to use psychotropics for whatever they can.
@Gerald. I don't know if this will help you,as every amputee is apparently different in their response to it.But GABAPENTIN (Brand name Neurontin) 300mg seems to work close to 100% for me in preventing the evil phantom pains (I'm a bilateral leg amputee). Suffered them for 24 years before I discovered through desperation this solution.Doctor similarly useless during that time, and didn't seem to care much.Meanwhile I suffered almost to despair.I feel your pain, man.I hope this can helpU
@Gerald. Neurontin comes in 300, 400 and 600mg tablets. If the Doc won't give you, U can order it over the counter in Thailand from any pharmacy.I pay about $20 per box of 100 (the 300mg ones).I'll send them to you if it comes down to that. I KNOW nobody understands or really cares, they think you're making it up. Gabapentin is similar to Lyrica apparently, but I've never tried the Lyrica (a more recent drug). The licence on Gaba expired so I think that's why the companies made Lyrica
I am an amputee as well and the pain drives me crazy!!!!! it's been 24 years and i feel I cant go on.... Lyrica seems to help.....but I dont think there is an answer to take it away all together. The worst thing is none of my family of freinds understand.
@scidud I found it, I found what works for me so far and it only takes about 10 - 20 minutes to take effect. You may not believe it at first but you must understand I've tried everything. Opiates do not work for spontaneous pain like this. BUT, I found that generic pills for Migraine, approx. 250mg of aspirin 250mg of acetaminophen and a grip of mgs of Caffeine.... no shit. I had nothing else the other night and one of the "stabbers" came on I ate 6 pills, 10min. gone!!! NO SHIT!!!!!
I'm 15 and I'm experiencing the same thing. I lost both my legs and it drives my crazy. Usually if u are doing something and ur mind is off it helps a little. I have found that if you shake it or just beat on it slightly it makes it feel a better for a little bit. Also sticking an ace rap on it tight helps to.
Hi, I'm a British soldier and I'm going through exactly what you are. I've been right up the chain of pain relief medication and still the phantom pains come. I had a deep brain stimulator fitted as my leg stump started tremoring 24/7 so that in resed my heart rate at rest so, more drugs. Nothing was working so I decide to come of pain mess which I did and I was able to gauge the real pain I am in and wow is it painful. I was then able to get the correct saying for the pain and talk to my docto
Thank you everyone for all of your heartfelt support, especially Christine and Angela. I actually found a way to help but it means being laid up for a few hours though. I take a whole day's dose of methadone with 3 promethazine and BAMMMM! I'm out for the duration.....No pain, just nodding in and out of awareness, but I did that for years so I know how to act...hahahah
I go through the same stuff as you do. And you might think, that I lost so little (the tip of my thumb), but the truth is it don't matter if it's a whole leg or just a tiny body part. One guy mentioned here, you either sleep through or do something, plus I would try to use a mirror, look up on the web mirror therapy. I'm trying this out.
I feel you pain, literally. The only thing I have found that works is either sleep through it, or totally engulf your mind into something else. Of course, the latter doesn't always work and I just deal with it.
my friend lost her leg and found relief with alexander technique, you could try it out, not saying its the instant cure (sorry if i sound like a spammer)...
Wish there was something i could do,or suggest, but i only just heard about the condition from you and wikipedia. You'll probably know this already, but the second 'how to cope with phantom pains' google hit had a list of things that might help?
2mg valium when your in this situation? what a pisstake. I weened myself off years ago,but still need over 10mg to feel anything at all if im in pain.
Sorry man,not much use,but hope your feeling better soon.
I would recommend against taking high doses of Excedrin as it may aggravate pain. The only information I could offer about medication apart from opiates is something called Gabapentin, which I hear eases phantom limb syndrome even though it is not in anyway a pain killer. Heard a story about someone who thought they had a fruit stuck in their throat but it was their own mind and Gabapentin is one really helpful medication.
I've heard that if you rub the area where your amputated leg is hurting, kind of like manipulating the energy where your limb used to be that it can help you mind think you are soothing the area. Think of healing the pain wth your touch as you do this, and remember to also focus on your breathing.
Something I think needs more research is using sexual stimulation to alter focus to a pleasant feeling, thus giving a perception of less pain, or better tolerance of it.
hey I am starting a pain managment clinic thing in the new year hope it works cuase the morphin isn't. I hate cannabis but it is the only thing that works 100% 100% of the time. I am not an amputy but I broke my back two years ago. cronic pain sucks no one knows unless there have been there.
