@xaxie1 well, it's similar to the phrase "Here's to Marco Polo and his adventures" when someone takes a toast while drinking. in this movie, Bogart loved staring at Bergman so he says "Here's looking at you kid." sort of like a cheers similar to drinking. also, bogart has played a lot of gangster roles in movies so his speech wasn't always accurate. i think it makes the quote that more unique.

This actually was not in the script. It was an inside reference between the two actors, which is why her reaction is so real. She didn't know he was going to say it to her, and in the context of the scene, it made it all the more powerful.
