That was a great match. Les wrestled smarter. Cael gassed himself with all the shots. He gets in on the legs easy enough but Gutch was able to turn him and get that throw when Cael got a little too aggressive and went over top. It's one of those tough matches when being too aggressive didn't pay off. Either one of those guys would f up just about anyone out there though.

It is over in 15 seconds and allows even the fans to see a match full of action, not laying on the ground grabbing arm bars without ever getting a turn. I have wrestled freestlye for many years and it's just frustrating how it's "all out" on your feet then it slows down when somebody gets taken down...you might not see it that way, but that's the way I see it. Folkstyle forces you to get up, where as freestlye, all you got to do is hold on for a certain amount of time and you can get back on your feet w/o doing anything!

The problem is a lot of people have no idea about Greco or freestyle. You have to be technical to be good. Just because somebody is fast, aggressive and exciting to watch doesn't mean they are any good or are going to win. This match is evidence of that. Seriously? I counted 6-8 and I am giving Cael the takedown at the beginning. If you wanna take your own knee out like that it should get shredded and/or you give up the points. after college, cael did not like international wrestling very much, and had a few scattered losses, so yes its ok that he lost nothing to freak out about. gutches also came to elmhurst college to put on a technique clinic and speak before the freestyle tournament hes pretty inspirational

ughh I like freestyle and all but some of the scoring is terrible. I lost a round (match due to the round) where I got the only take down, and then stepped out of bounds in neutral position later (1point for him) and they told me since he was the last to score the round was his. I felt robbed =x

Gutches i stotally legit as a wrestler, but herein lies the problem with freestyle scoring. Sanderson owned his ass for this entire match, but because of the throw, Gutches wins. Too much greco influence. That was a totally dominating performance by one of the three greatest american wrestlers in history!!
One of the best wrestling matches I've seen. Gutches was more experienced and already had a lot of success against tough international competition, and Sanderson, although he didn't come out on top in terms of points, was as dominating and exciting to watch as always.

The reason so many people are confused watching this match is because from little on up we are accustomed to watching folkstyle. If the US is ever going to dominate in this sport we need to switch over to freestyle and get rid of folkstyle all together! Too much emphasis is put on the takedown and riding time here in the US. Not enough emphasis on throws and turns. Until we make freestyle our standard we will always be mediocre in international competition!
@supermario103 Takedowns are only one point, not two, in freestyle hence Cael only had Five points. Gutches scored one for a takedown and two for exposure in the first, and he committed a three point throw, a throw of low difficulty which is basically a takedown and exposure in the second. Thats why he won 6-5.
when I watch older matches compared to the new crappy rules of today, it pisses me off how fila has screwed the sport with all the stupid rule changes...this was/is a classic match
Freestyle is all about getting those quick back exposure points like you saw at 3:50 and scoring with throws. Wrestlers who are good with throws, foot sweeps, rolls from the front headlock, and tilts have a HUGE advantage. Watch Terry Brands vs. Kendall Cross and you'll see. Brands pounds his way into 3 solid takedowns that would be 6 points in folkstyle but only score 3 in freestyle. Then Cross rolls brands across his back once and the match is even.
What an amazing match!! Gutches is a beast. Cael is a beast. WOW! One of the sickest throws I've seen in a high level match in a long time. This was a clinic that can be watched over and over again for learning. Thanks to both of these guys for giving us this treat!!

That's what I call a wrestling match! If it wasn't just about points and was about who dominated most of the match it would have gone to Cael. He came out on top over and over again. There were a couple of times too where Cael was on top and the ref made them restart both standing and I think Cael should've been allowed to keep doing what he was doing.
I really liked seeing this side of cael, it makes it thrice as awesome when u see some of his better matches. I also like how it kinda shows u tht in wrestling the more u wrestle the better u get. Cael is still my idol :)
I actually wrestled, I know what the move is, it's a "flippy twist" as far as I am concerned, I know how many points it is worth. Gutches dominated by Sanderson, Gutches never wins again if they wrestle 10 times.
Sandersojn dominated that dude in every aspect of the match, except of course the one flippy twist that in real wrestling means nothing. As I see it, Sanderson wins 12-8.

That "handkerchief" is what is known as a blood rag in Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. It is still used and is a requirement for all wrestlers to show the ref they have it upon stepping on the mat.
the video says its from 2000 so this is after his sophomore year of college cause they also say that hes a two time national champ in the first couple minutes he was undefeated in college and even though he is still in college during this match it doesn't count on his college record
He was in College. This is a freestyle match, and I'm not sure if Cael is in college or not. Les is a few years older than him, and had a lot for freestyle experience.

I don't know what you are all talking about, Gutches had two takedowns, two or three back exposures and then a 5 on top of that. Guches scored 11 or 13 points and Sanderson scored 6. I am suprised by how many people don't know the rules of this sport.

ughh I like freestyle and all but some of the scoring is terrible. I lost a round (match due to the round) where I got the only take down, and then stepped out of bounds in neutral position later (1point for him) and they told me since he was the last to score the round was his. I felt robbed =x

Gutches i stotally legit as a wrestler, but herein lies the problem with freestyle scoring. Sanderson owned his ass for this entire match, but because of the throw, Gutches wins. Too much greco influence. That was a totally dominating performance by one of the three greatest american wrestlers in history!!

One of the best wrestling matches I've seen. Gutches was more experienced and already had a lot of success against tough international competition, and Sanderson, although he didn't come out on top in terms of points, was as dominating and exciting to watch as always.

The reason so many people are confused watching this match is because from little on up we are accustomed to watching folkstyle. If the US is ever going to dominate in this sport we need to switch over to freestyle and get rid of folkstyle all together! Too much emphasis is put on the takedown and riding time here in the US. Not enough emphasis on throws and turns. Until we make freestyle our standard we will always be mediocre in international competition!

@supermario103 Takedowns are only one point, not two, in freestyle hence Cael only had Five points. Gutches scored one for a takedown and two for exposure in the first, and he committed a three point throw, a throw of low difficulty which is basically a takedown and exposure in the second. Thats why he won 6-5.

Freestyle is all about getting those quick back exposure points like you saw at 3:50 and scoring with throws. Wrestlers who are good with throws, foot sweeps, rolls from the front headlock, and tilts have a HUGE advantage. Watch Terry Brands vs. Kendall Cross and you'll see. Brands pounds his way into 3 solid takedowns that would be 6 points in folkstyle but only score 3 in freestyle. Then Cross rolls brands across his back once and the match is even.

What an amazing match!! Gutches is a beast. Cael is a beast. WOW! One of the sickest throws I've seen in a high level match in a long time. This was a clinic that can be watched over and over again for learning. Thanks to both of these guys for giving us this treat!!

That's what I call a wrestling match! If it wasn't just about points and was about who dominated most of the match it would have gone to Cael. He came out on top over and over again. There were a couple of times too where Cael was on top and the ref made them restart both standing and I think Cael should've been allowed to keep doing what he was doing.

That "handkerchief" is what is known as a blood rag in Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. It is still used and is a requirement for all wrestlers to show the ref they have it upon stepping on the mat.
