I saw a lot of Jim's games as a diehard Bomber but in my opinion there was 1 player better than him during his time and though i hate to say it its Wayne Carey.He had one thing Jim didn't have, brute strength. In every other way they lined up pretty well even except on loyalty to their wives.

So overall, Hird was the greater footballer IMO.

Don't get me wrong, still think Ablett and Carey were amazing footballers.

John Coleman only played 98 games. You can't compare Hird to someone who didn't play many games, also it's virtually impossible to compare players in different positions. However, Hird could play anywhere and even won his Brownlow at Half Forward for most of the year. Coleman could only play at full-forward (which he was, however, amazing at) So I think Hird was better.

As for Reynolds, he was a more physical player where as Hird weaved his magic. It's hard to compare the two.

Hard to compare? Both Dick and Hird could play anywhere. Even with Hird playing at HFF, Dick had 400 or so goals. Reynolds IS the best player in the history of Essendon. If either Reynolds, Hird or Coleman were available in this era (let's say each player still has the same impact and the change of rules doesn't affect either one) I would definitely pick Coleman.

Reynolds and Hird averaged the same amount of goals a game. And Hird was a midfielder primarily, he says it himself. There greatness is not measured by how many goals he kicks anyways. Hird was also brilliant in his leadership and standing up when it counts. I'm sure Reynolds was like that too. You cannot prove one was better than the other. I just prefer the way Hird played. And Coleman and Hird were better than each other in different ways, and played different positions and you cant compare.
