  • I think what is great about this piece is that it gives the double bass another truly romantic, melodic concerto to add to the repertoire. I also believe it has its shortcomings as a composition, i.e. it is rather repetitive. However it is certainly a quintessential part of the repertoire.

  • Great playing---terrible piece! o_O

  • @kurd55 Haha. Still, it's not as bad as Dragonetti's or Botessini's concertos. I think this is alright.

  • @kurd55 nah... this piece is great!

  • @samdajellybeenie14 It has a humorous appeal, I admit. I've listened to it more than once---so it must have something to it! =)

  • @kurd55 the piece is epic :)

  • @kurd55 What are you talking about???

  • @dcco76 I'm saying anyone with a minor grasp of music literature for this time period knows this piece is a big pile of poo-poo. The playing of the soloist is quite nice, however. I also like the orchestra. But again, the composition is a novelty at best, in my humble opinion, of course.

  • @kurd55 You are entitled to believe whatever you wish.I would just like to point out, however, that Koussevitzky premiered his own concerto at age 31. With his illustrious career he obviously knew something about music and how to perform. He knew what music was terrible and what was wonderful. This composition, I will admit, has a big flaw in the 3rd Mvt. but it is definitely not a novelty. A novelty would be writing only for the strings for this concerto. Clearly the whole orchestra is involved

  • @dcco76 And you are entitled to believe what ever you wish. No serious analysis class or seminar would characterize this piece as special in any way. Sounds like a novelty piece to me. In and of itself, being a novelty piece is not really that bad, and I'm glad people continue to perform odd pieces like this. However, another strike against it was that it was written in the early 1900's. Sounds like a cheap imitation of Tchaikovsky music written 30 years before!

  • @kurd55 I don't quite understand how it is a novelty piece. Please explain what a novelty piece is, and how this concerto fits that description. Also, what piece(s) would you classify as a "Non-novelty", and why?

  • @dcco76 Okay. But I need to understand more about where you're coming from. 1st, do you think this concerto is on-par with the great concertos, like Tchaikovsky's, Beethoven's, Schoenberg's, Mozart's, concertos, or even Bach's cello suites? Surely you can't think that all "classical" pieces are equal. Now if you tell me that you believe this Koussevitsky piece is as great as the acknowledged masterpieces, perhaps I can go from there. In other words, how great do you think this piece is?

  • @kurd55 Personally, I love this concerto (apart from the repetition of mvt.1 in mvt.3). I think it is one of the best concertos written for bass. That being said, I also love the popular violin concertos (Tchaik, Beethoven, Sibelius, etc.) I wouldn't say it is as great as the acknowledged masterpieces, but it is up there. The cello suites are one of my favorite compositions ever, and are a definite masterpiece. I still don't see how this piece is a novelty or how you define a "novelty".

  • @dcco76 I think it's obvious that Koussevitzky's "inspiration" for this piece was due to the lack of repertoire for basso. Due to that very extensive lack of repertoire, proves that this piece is a novelty by definition. A novelty is: state or quality of being novel, new, or unique. Koussevitzky knew he wasn't a composer by a long shot. That's why he didn't do much composing. He tried to fill a void and hoped composers would follow. Eventually, composers did follow--Hindemith & Druckman etc.

  • @dcco76 To continue. I'm glad you and others love this piece. It's important in a lot of ways besides on a compositional level. It's a integral part of music history. Therefore, even if a person doesn't like the piece, we can still be aware of it's importance--and like the fact that other people really enjoy it. And thanks for answering my question. You are quite logical and articulate. I like that. And I concede that you probably know this particular piece better than I do.

  • this is beautiful

  • arileable

  • what? this is slide IS, of course, apropriate because is a pos-romantic music. That you have to be "dramatic" .

    Edicson Ruiz is the best

  • great performance, but theres waaay to much portamento in my opinion... makes it sound like he has to slide to hit the right notes... which i dont think he really needs to!

just my opinion though, this is a great bass player of course!

  • looks like he listen to old Koussevitzky recordings. but Koussevitzky have a problems with hands while recordings, so this "sliding" not appropriate. However, i like this interpretation))

  • Yes likeyou said its your opinion, some peole like it some people dont, but hes a reallygreat bass player, winnin in berlin at 17 years its just incredible!! i belive there is more for comig

  • @multifaros Have you heard Koussevitzky play his own 2nd Mvt?

  • fierce

    work itttt

  • WOW! what an incredible player.

  • Felicitaciones Edicson!!!

  • Great biece. Great performance. I love his bass!

  • @dbassgabrieltd e tambeim a Chavez nao?

  • sencillamente excelente interpretacion!!

  • In regards to ElJuapeador's comment about the portamento... it's very characteristic of Koussevitzky to use huge amounts of portamento, even more than what Edicson uses. If you listen to his performances of Chanson Triste, this concerto, or the Eccles Sonata it's almost humorous how he glisses into every other note.

  • Yes! That's how it's done. I love his playing. Especially how's he's not biting the long first note on the first couple of phrases.

  • So much passion. beautiful.

  • how is this not one of best solo works????

  • Don't get me wrong...I love the piece.

...it's just that I don't really enjoy this particular soloist's playing.

  • No way man. I like the piece, but the soloist is what makes this stand out for me.

  • I was thinking the same.

  • Bravo, Bravo
