  • this or ubuntu?

  • ke figo mi puoi passare quello sfondo??

  • Nice wallpapaer :D

  • @KeepSharing31 yes night city :D

  • Caraca, o que é vista de capeta? O_o

  • @djallinlucky check unix.stackexchange, where they explain what to consider when choosing a distro.

  • Wow this is cool. *_*

  • guys wich one of linux is the best?ubuntu 11.10 or this mandriva...or something elese....PLEASE:...i need an os...and i cant decide...

  • @djallinlucky try newest fedora - i dont like ubuntu

  • @djallinlucky There is not "the best". It is all about what you do need. Most people run after trends and media attention but never wanted to test and search the best technology what to use. They want "best" because someone else says so.

I would forget Ubuntu (and all its desktop variants) and focus to openSUSE, Fedora, Arch Linux, Debian or Mandriva.

But sometimes if user does not want to cut teeths to learn fast, they should pick one what friend has and learn slowly if never.

  • @djallinlucky

mandriva 2011 is a very nice OS(in my openion)...

  • @djallinlucky Linux Mint is the easiest to use, very user friendly, and has an excellent hardware recognition. To my opinion, check the version 10 Julia or 11 Katya. You Tube: Linux Mint 11 Review - Linux Distro Reviews

  • KDE,the best

  • stack folder looks nice, someone knows how I put dolphin's scrool in KDE 4.7 installed on Ubuntu?

  • Nice theme.

The Rosa Taskbar has a bug, sometimes icons turn upside down.

  • there is something about KDE, i can see it's good, but i really don't get the feel for it :|

  • @jesuisbenjamin there is always a chance you might like it if you try it

  • @trasmethrash perhaps, but in the end I use merely one environment and for now XFCE is doing very good, I especially like its flexibility (it even provides APIs like pyxfce, so you can hack in easily).

  • What kind of Linux is free?!

  • @kryssstynaaa Most of Linux distributions: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mandriva (versions One and Free). Whatever, if your interested in one of the comercial ones, like Mandriva Powerpack or Flash, the price is about 50 euros, against the 200 euros that cost Windows distributions.

  • @isayuna5 There ain't any "Windows distributions".... Distribution is a name for software system what is packaged with chosen and preconfigured software specific target user in mind. The operating system in software system is freely distributable.

  • @TheFri13 thanks for the aclaration :) It´s said: you never go bed without learning something elseª

  • @kryssstynaaa all kinds of linux r free

  • @fardinproductionz Well, most are. Some, like iMagic OS, aren't free. But IMO, there is really no reason to pay for a Linux distro, unless you are in a work environment.

  • wow, dude, did you just have the feeling at 1 AM that you must urgently post a YT video? :D

  • @TheXurhan

There is rumors about one of the worlds fastest computer that linux, runs a modified version of

    red flag linux

The fastest computer ever made is K.

K is made by Fujitsu i think

  • @TheXurhan Thats not true.

if you use an linux kernel with PAE (physical adress extension) and if it is 64bit than you could have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more ram than that.

And the worlds fastest supercomputer runs linux, with som enhancements though.

  • @TailsX97 PAE works for 32bit CPUs of P6 architecture and above to work with up to 64GB.

64 bit allows for 2^64 bytes (==16777216 TB) of RAM. There would be no point of a functional PAE for that yet.

  • @GileraXR1

    What are you saying?

My computer have more than 16777216 TB ram and its 128bit :)

  • @GileraXR1 just joking lol :)

  • @TailsX97 Thought so. :D Nearly nothing feels as good as trolling ;)

  • @GileraXR1 wrong, the RAM limit for 32 bit processors are 4 GB

  • @trasmethrash Yes, but with PAE. Setting the 5th bit of CR4 register on Pentium MMX and above and allows you to use up to 64 gigs of physical RAM. The virtual address space remains 32bit indeed but it does not have much to do with the amount of physical memory installed.

  • @GileraXR1 I mean Pentium Pro, sorry :)

  • @trasmethrash 3.25

  • @trasmethrash limit is 3.25Gb. Even Microsoft got tired that people complained that they see only 3.25Gb of RAM while they have 4, and MS made change on Windows 7 so it does report installed RAM amount, not what is usable.

  • @TheXurhan Ubuntu is very easy to use and maintain.

its pretty fast and easy to customise.

Btw there is a app called mac4lin that you can download from sourceforge.

That package gives you a very mac similar environment.

But it only work propper with gnome 2 so it should work with ubuntu 11.04 some older ubuntu distributions and debian

  • @TheXurhan Or you could just recompile the kernel and make it support 16?

  • @TheXurhan :)

    RIP. Steve Jobs 1955-2011.

  • u r a kid

  • And one more thing.

Mac osx and linux is very similar because they are both based on the unix kernel.

So mac and linux is very similar on the core level.

  • @TheXurhan Thats an easy question.

And the answer is: All linux distributions is pretty much the same.

They work the same way on the core level "kernel"

and that makes all the linux distributions very similar.

so if you like ubuntu you should like mandriva and fedora and opensuse and all other distributions that has an graphical desktop environment. "KDE, LXDE, GNOME, etc"

i have keept an eye on the mandriva project ever since i tried linux the first time.

but i decided to go the path of ubuntu

  • @TailsX97 The Linux kernel is the operating system and every Linux distribution is just different software system bundled with different set and versions of same softwares and configured with little different way.

Most noticeable differences are that what package system (example RPM or DPKG) is used and what package manager is in use (example URPMI or APT). Then is the default installation configuration (themes, preinstalled application programs etc).

  • @TheFri13

I think RPM is a piece of shit but i like deb and dpkg.

I think the arch linux pacman is the best package manager. its because its very fast and easy to use.

There is a package for debian/ubuntu that is called "alien" i think.

It can convert rpm packages to deb packages.

  • @TheXurhan there is lots of apps for mandriva.

havent tried mandriva but i know that there is many apps for it

It should have an built in, appstore similar, program for managing and download apps and games.

  • @TheXurhan there are so many distributions of Linux which makes it hard to compare Mac or Windows to Linux because each distro is so different. but generally speaking Linux-based OS's are extremely lightweight, and as a result can run much faster than Mac or Windows.

In my opinion Ubuntu is the best distro of Linux, especially for comparing to Windows or Mac.

Ubuntu is absolutely beautiful, and has all the features that mac/windows users will recognize and many new features aswell.

    All for free!

  • @TheBird1888 one thing i dont like about Ubuntu 11.10 is that they changed to unity.

well it looks great but i like the old gnome 2 much better.

if i would choose a beginner distribution of linux i think i should choose ubuntu.

advanced distribution i would choose slackware or arch.

opensuse is an very good linux distribution too

  • there is a new distribution that have been forked from mandriva its called mageia

  • @TheXurhan

    ofc i can :)

linux is less demanding on hardware, requires less ram and boots faster. Linux has plenty of apps.

And if you install Wine you can run some windows programs and games too

one thing with linux is that nearly all apps is free :)

There is many desktop environments for linux:

KDE, Gnome2 and Gnome 3, LXDE, XFCE,

The best linux distributions IMO is Arch linux but its very advanced

mandriva seems as it is a very nice distribution

linux works with more hardware than mac

  • @TheXurhan

I think you could get this to run on an pentium 3 or higher with atleast 512 mb ram

It does not support exe or msi files natively but if you install WINE you can run some windows programs

I think that you should'nt bother with KDE i think Gnome is much better.

  • cool :D

    is this using gnome 3?

  • @ronyachmad91

    Nope. this is KDE 4.x

  • whoah i thought i saw a mac.

  • Beautiful Enviroment.

  • @iorel1982 ok, gracias amigo

  • А KDE 3 лучше

  • The Best Mandriva Ever

  • Best Looking Linux Desktop I've seen so far :)

XD

    Saludos!
