  • I remember being of the game back in 2007... Now that I actually have a 360 I may get this game. I've been yearning to play a RPG as well. XD

  • @PuchikoNyu2 *being interested in this game. Typo. :/

  • Comment removed

  • They did the same with dante's inferno review I think: they have 1 piece of music going on in the entirety of the video review, I feel like I'm watching "play this game while I play inappropriate music" ¬_¬.

  • best game ever

  • @IPITYTHEFOOLZ @thedocbat @topografer @chrisfur2

Thank you, guys, all of you. I've taken some suggestions seriously, though I'll right now enjoy my westernation with Portal 2 and Uncharted 3.

  • I'm gonna start a JRPG soon for the holidays, should I start with Eternal Sonata or Magnacarta 2? :)

  • @Ax2SG lost odyssey

  • Story line is okay. Gameplay and Music ow epic. The characters are okay too. Though I do like Fredric and Jazz. Falsetto is nice too.

  • love this game :D

  • I talk from 2011, own a PS3, and am still waiting for a great immersive JRPG.

  • @IGNerBrasil have you played valkyria chronicles?

  • @chrisfur2 great recommendation I loved that game!

  • @IGNerBrasil If you have a friend with an xbox change consoles for abit and play lost odyssey.. Its propably the best JRPG in the "best games you've never player" category

  • @IGNerBrasil Buy a Wii. (Xenoblade)

  • @IGNerBrasil Tales of Graces is coming out in March and should be a great JRPG.

  • @IPITYTHEFOOLZ dont forget ni no kuni

  • @SomeTotalRandom Yeah it looks great too, I just had no idea what the name of it was since most of the videos aren't in English. So thanks for that, now I can keep an eye on it for when it comes out.

  • @IGNerBrasil Played Resonance of Fate?

  • yo i put 80 hours in this game...not 20-30:P

  • They didnt give it a score .............am I missing something

  • I played the demo for this and watched it after beating vesperia for the second time... I just hate Eternal Sonata, apperance didnt mend the wound.

  • I want this.

  • @TheCoco152 take it, trust me, it is great ;) and now it has a cheap price

  • played this back in 2008 and I have positive memories of it over all but the story and characters were both rubbish and irritating at times but the combat and RPG mechanics were excellent simple and fun

  • Eternal Sonata II coming soon!

  • @waslookat1me That's not true.

  • @waslookat1me

    I fucking wiiiiish!!!!

  • Rank F

  • i recommend it. I love the mind trick they play on you at the end. Its not a spoiler, but if you play through till the credits it has a crappy ending. if you wait till they are over, things make sense and the true ending happens. haha perhaps thats why the critic was confused, though im sure critics are paid to figure that stuff out

  • I bought cuz it was on sale. meh, couldn't get into the story for me.

  • Eternal Sonata is a very good game, But I don't deny that they could've had more character development though.

  • @xAzureIzumix I agree, but *Spoilers* it was all a dream...

  • @OzakiRain Oh I know that, But still..

  • I spent 20-30 hours for it, I loved it! But it was way too short! If only it was twice as long!

  • I don't know if its just me, but i have a ps2 and a ps3, and i much prefer the RPG games available for PS2, if you don't have a PS2, i suggest you buy one and look up some of those RPG's For Example --Star Ocean 'Til the End of Time --Dark Cloud I and Dark Cloud II --Wild Arms 3, Wild Arms 4, Wild Arms 5 --Final Fantasy X, --Xenosaga Episode I, Xenosaga Episode II (i re-beat all of these games this summer) yes "re-beat" as in they have good replay value, :)
  • @ozzyblazer16 can i buy your ps2 please

  • This game is da bomb !

  • Almost the same with FF XIII a lot of cut scenes which i love them btw (:

  • I wish I had had this game when I was taking music appreciation in college lol

  • Borrowed this from my public library and i got to say, I am glad I got a library card.

  • @vuhathe2 jealous as hell of your library! They have games? even if its just a couple a winner like this seems like good enough reason to me.

  • I actually liked the add with the robot and the burger...

  • How is this game and is it worth buying?

  • dont think i want this game if it is all just a dream i hate stuff like that

  • i played this game when my cable when our for like an hour and my dad was with me when i started playing and he hated the cut sences so for fun ( and to bug me ) he screamed all the words they said and would say this game sucked then left then room

  • THE PIECE BETWEEN 30 sec and 1 min what is it please, i love it ^_^

  • @Weastell95 All of the piano music in this vid is from Chopin's Grande Valse Brillante opus 18. :)

  • @xHaukansilmax thankyou so much :)!

  • Anyone recommend this for PS3? I'm dying for an RPG!

  • @jleack I recommend it. It's a fun game and worth it. It should be pretty cheap now too

  • @jleack well its really good game but the xbox 360 version and the PS3 version are both a bit different because the PS3 version has more things to do....its like a expansion pack but just for the PS3....

which sucks for me because i got the xbox 360 version =/

  • @jleack I bought it on PS3 for 15 bucks used, and so far it's well worth it. Gotta love the soundtrack and colorful graphics... and we have so few RPGs on the PS3, don't miss it!

  • @jleack ps3 version is slightly better, get this, star ocean, wkc, ff13 etc

  • @jleack same bro! recommend any good ones? im looking at catherine at the moment not really an rpg but still looks interesting!

  • @jleack It's good, but other rpgs are better. This is definitely a game that provides variety to most rpgs, but get valkyria chronicles instead. If you have time to kill and want a unique rpg, this is good. However, VC is much better.

  • @jleack get it, it is good... also final fantasy 13 is good, it has a very good story, only reason why no one likes it, is because the fat has been trimed out... the main focus is on the story!!.... if you want a good battle system get resonance of fate, it has an okay story.but the battle system is like a john woo movie/game on steroids!!.. there is a game comming out called" tales of xillia" which is looking like the best rpg ever, but you need to petition so that it gets released worldwide

  • @jleack

Try Enchanted Arms if you get the chance, I'm 2/3 of the way through and loving it

  • @xxSpearMonkeyxx i have that game and this one.they're both probably my favorite rpgs:D

  • @kreaper17

I beat it a while ago and was very pleased. There wasn't really anything innovative about the story but the game was really solid and the combat system was sooooo fun

  • @jleack DItto

  • @jleack i know right i cannot find jrpg for 360 or ps3 japan needs to start taking there games to western shores cause they have so many good rpgs and they could make alot of money!

  • @jleack if you're still on youtube, definitely pick up eternal sonata if you haven't yet. it's a great game, and it has bonus stuff on ps3. i played it on 360 so i wouldn't know. it's tough to get all the achievements, but it's a very interesting game.

  • @ragdollfaerie yeah that sorta is what i got from it.

though i still think the story of the game isn't all that good. it begins kind of like most games where a girl has special powers and needs to be captured by the bad guys because of it.

the weird thing is that it sorta ends without real plot twists. it seems to be done as simple as possible.

i did like the importance of music in this game though

  • I admit I loved this game, but looking back, the only things that the game actually did well were the battle system and (of course) the music.

  • Story was dull Except the fact that it was Chopin's dream world, that concept was cool but it wasn't written very well. And the characters don't have much emotion, except Fredric himself, also they look kinda stiff in cutscenes.

  • At first the combat was interesting, but this game ruined JRPG's for me. I eventually finished it, but god, It was dull. The storyline was obvious and the characters were so two dimensional it hurt. I really don't understand why people like it so much. Lost Odyssey was a much better JRPG, a much better game full stop.

  • @redbuck82 Wow... Is there any RPG that matches what you said first? I mean, does a game where you can create your own weapons by taking them apart exists? If so, would you mind telling me it's name? :)

  • So... apparently Chopin dreamed about anime characters from Japan with HUGE eyes that, while playing his music, fight a bunch of monsters....

    I'm down

  • I need help should I get this or Tales of Vesperia I have a 360

    PLEASE HELP

  • @Lionpaw16

well you can download both games from the xbox marketplace. Eternal Sonata costs around 20 dollars while Tales of vespria costs around 30 dollars. Both of these games are really hard to find new in a disk form, so I suggest you buy from the xbox marketplace.

And really, you should get both of these games since it will only cost you around 50 dollars, 10 dollars less than a full retail game. They're both great.

  • @tokyo200 that sounds like a great idea and since summer is coming up I'll have ALL summer to beat these 40-60 hour games. Thnaks

  • @Lionpaw16 get it will only run you 50$ total 20 sonata and 30 for vesperia

  • @allhailshadow21 sorry meant get both

  • its not he game but its far better than FF13, who had this games flaws and more. and didnt think ign thought that those things was bad in FF13 that they thought was bad in this game :/ FAIL

  • Funny, was just listening to one of chopin's best works, his first ballade then I came across this video, games are getting stranger these days.

  • *MAJOR SPOILERS*

i would like you to help me. i have played this game AND finished it.

but i thought that the story was incredibly weird and i didn't get it.

at one point. Polka needs to do a ritual. and there is made a big deal about it. she does it, and nothing happens.

and at the end, Polka falls from a cliff then frederic dies. i don't get it.

did i miss something? or should i play it again?

  • @basman2006

anyone correct me if i remember wrong, but isnt frederic chopin. and the character dies when chopin dies?

  • This game will amaze you.

  • Thumbs up if you love the way that Polka's hair flow when shes runing ^^

  • @XPrespawn Yeah, some of the voice actors with get on your nerves (serah... why do you have to be so annoying, but so so useful???) but overall, I'm happy with voice acting. I was expecting mass effect 2 to be a serious game because it was made by Bioware, and it was a good game, but i did enjoy Star Ocean more.

  • @XPrespawn I enjoyed mass effect 2, it was a good game, but you are right Star Ocean is a better game in my opinion. Now here is a challenge for you, try and get faize and lymle to share a room, good luck :)

  • @XPrespawn Nice choice for star ocean! That will keep you playing for a while :)

  • Is this game worth getting?? Or shld I get tales of vesperia??

  • @Gengar59 Personally, I like Eternal Sonata more. The battle system is faster and more action oriented, while the story is the most adult-themed story EVER!! Plus, It draws you in with it's ridiculously good graphics and interesting characters. However, if you want more of a long game, you should play Tales of Vesperia, since it takes double the time to beat than Eternal Sonata ^^

  • @Gengar59 Both are great games, but my favorite is Eternal Sonata. Im not saying Tales is worse, but I just preferred Eternal more.

  • In other words, its a Brilliantly made game! We Don't usually get too many of those these days you know!

  • lol this game will 'beat you in the head with moral values' haha :DDD (y)

  • id get this game but id feel too embarrased to pik it up in the shop

  • @SykoSkillz lol i would have my girlfriend watch me play this :)

  • @ADa89mixus bigger balls than me mate, bigger balls indeed :D

  • @SykoSkillz Just order it online. That's what i'm doing. :D

  • @madmike42345 aha genius!

  • @SykoSkillz Yeah! WOOOOOOOOO

  • Me and my friends are big Tales of whatever fans, and we decided to pick this up, its a really good game to play to take a break from the Tales franchise.

  • I really can't stand anime style. Which is why I can't get in to most Japanese RPGs.

  • Very few sidequests? that may be true BUT the score piece sidequest requires 2 entire playthroughs to finish it, its limited but lengthy

  • i liked the gameplay but.... Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible storyline

  • jeez, what is it with ign? It seems like they have to hate on anything that ISN'T a damn fps. It's ok to notice flaws in games, but can you guys at least balance it out like 50/50? You know, instead of 5% of the review being good things about a game and the other 95% the flaws? That would be wonderful, stop being biased....

  • @Pyro25100 They did a good job of stating the good and the bad, although they are wrong about one major thing. There are a TON of pointless filler missions that feel tedious and time consuming. This almost ruined the game for me. At one point, you are picking up pieces of paper to feed to a goat.... This sounds easy, but if you get through with it and then die (because there isnt a save point) you have to do it all over again. This includes all of the conversations.

  • My first and only jrpg I finished. I just never really liked the turn based crap, hopefully one day jrpgs evolve to a real rpg. Btw I like ES a bit boring at times but good

  • @ese4life667 If you dont like turn based "crap" try the Tales Of series. Its not turned based. Anyway, i suggest you look at games like

Tales Of The Abyss to the PS2

Tales Of Vesperia to the 360

Tales Of Phantasia GBA and SNES.

those three are my favourite ones in the series, and every game is stand alone in the story.

  • is it better than Tales of vesparia?

  • @adegamisoumounopano i didn't either, until that game came out, and believe me my man it was worth every penny. Waiting on dark souls now shits gonna be tight

  • @adegamisoumounopano well, in demon's soul, of course.

  • @Wadupbeyotch1 that game looks tits, but i don't have a ps3....

  • the only thing keeping me playing this game are the AWESOME graphics and the cool battles. the rest of the game is just horrible...the cut scenes are suicidally boring.. the story is pathetic, and the overall "tee hee!" gayness of the game is just too much to deal with for us heterosexuals.. rpg makers should make mature rpg's.. what's with all the sappy little girls and kids?? where are the bad ass paladins , the thieves, the warriors and old and the wise magicians!! you fucking losers!!!

  • @adegamisoumounopano

Haven't you noticed all Jap RPG's are all like that?

They all have those fag characters you just want to punch in the face, (Speaking of Count Waltz' voice here).

If you want a mature RPG, go play RPG's made by America/Europe, i know theres little of it, but they're out there. (Oblivion, Demon's Soul, Folklore) About Folklore.. I think its a jap game, but it is mature and badass.

  • @Kentuckyfriedasian2 sweet, imma check out folklore! sounds good. .. i beat eternal sonata the other day and i stand by my opinion.. gotta say, the battles and graphics were very cool... but the rest of the game was far too gay.. this could have been a perfect game if they scrapped all of its gayness and focused on a mature story, characters and enemies.. how the fuck did this style become cliche?? who likes this kind of shit apart from gay people and 5 year olds anyway?

  • @adegamisoumounopano

    Exactly man, exactly...

Them Japs gotta realize its not just them making the good RPG's anymore, American RPG's are growing.

They gotta stop making the gay immature J-RPG's which only Japs themselves like, gotta realize us North Americans/Europeans playing their games find it gay..

  • @Kentuckyfriedasian2 so ignorant and immature.

  • @burgabuns

    Me? Or Eternal Sonata.

I do not see any immaturity at all in my opinion of this game. I just stated that i dislike how every generic J-RPG game theres that somewhat homosexual looking/sounding character.

    Ignorant... How?

Name one J-RPG that doesn't have that homosexual/fancypants character.

    FF: Sephiroth, oh dear...

    Eternal Sonata: Waltz.

Tales of Symphonia: Yuriel, Zatos or w/e his face is.

Blue dragon is the only exception i can think of without the gay character...

  • @Kentuckyfriedasian2 your ignorance stems from agreeing with using words like 'fag.' also, I would not say sephiroth is a queer character, nor have I played through eternal sonata yet. however, jrpg are clearly a different breed and it is a breath of fresh air in the sea of dull grey that american rpg's are. for the record, I love fallout and eternal sonata seems to have AWFUL voice acting. I enjoyed rpgs better when you had to imagine the character's voices.

  • @burgabuns

Sephiroth is very much a queer character imo :) .

    Whatev's though dude.

Americans have greater MMO-RPG's, thats where im comin off of, they have very little decent RPG's, the rest are just a boring repetitive X / Y / B / A spam.

You have your opinion though, i respect that.

  • A good thing is that you can skip cutscenes if you feel that it's too long and you don't want to watch them. Especially the parts about Chopin's life that you can go back and look over if you wish. The fixed camera is annoying (although I've never been good at using cameras in the first place). I can understand the relation of the story of the game to Chopin's life which is the point of the game hence his dream, but it takes some thinking.

  • The fixed camera really annoys me.

  • Great game. It is a nice change of pace from the other rpgs I've been playing.

  • this is my favourite RPG of all time right now ^^

  • @Forevirknight Right Next To Tales Of Vesperia! Hell Yeah! ;)

  • @Forevirknight Yea this game is my current fav. RPG which is hard to say when I have played so many of the KH, FF, Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Tos as well as some others

  • The world you play in nice, but the story itself isn't all to entertaining. The cut scenes in between gameplay are much to long and the inserts about Chopin's real life doesn't actually relate much to the story. The main Character's personalities aren't all that entertaining either. The only character I really ended up liking was Salsa and Viola. No one else quite appealed to me.

  • @inyoru You picked up a JRPG and you were expecting short cut scenes? JRPGs are know for their long cut scenes. I just finished Star Ocean: The Last Hope and the cut scene before the final boss and after the final boss together took around 45 minutes. While the boss, with both his forms, only took me about 15 minutes to defeat.

  • @ScottishFyre wow mine felt like the reverse of that on star ocean.

  • @Seyaku Really? Thats interesting... what level were you when you took on the final boss? That would extend the length of the battle, but I'm surprised that the cut scenes were short for you. I remember starting the cut scene before the battle at around 5ish, the battle starting at about 5:20ish and the final cutscene ending around 6ish... Interesting how that works...

  • @ScottishFyre i want to say i was in the high 70s. I remeber the last move i learned with Edge was a really good sword combo

  • @Seyaku Really? Wow... I believe my party were all lvl 65-68. I used a TON of rush combos and got through him pretty quickly. What was you"re party? I had Edge, Merecle, Arumat and Sereh for healing.

  • @ScottishFyre That ain't nothin. MGS4's final sequence is fully an hour and a half long. That's a feature length movie at the end of the game.

  • @Saibrock I wasn't trying to start a competition. I was pointing out the fault in a person expecting a JRPG to have short cut scenes. Star Ocean is a 3 disc game, but they could have easily gotten it down to one if the cut scenes were shorter. think about that, 2 discs were for cut scenes, overall there was easily 15 hours of cut scenes

  • @ScottishFyre hey dude, can u recommend any jrpg's for noobs? the only one ive played is FFX and i totally sucked at it and never finished it. any games that can get people into the genre?

  • @tharbk01 Suikoden

  • @tharbk01 What systems are you looking to play on? My personal favorites are Chrono Trigger for the SNES (dated, sure, but still rockin), and Tales of Symphonia for the GameCube. Eternal Sonata is actually a pretty casual JRPG, and could serve as a decent intro into the genre.

  • @Saibrock i have ps2, gc, and 360. idk where the ds went lol. ill make sure to check out tales of symphonia.

  • @tharbk01 For the 360, there's also Tales of Vesperia, but while I haven't played through that one (on account of not having a 360), I've heard it's not actually as good as Tales of Symphonia (arguably the best of the Namco Tales series).

  • Comment removed

  • @tharbk01 Hmm... what console do you have? Without knowing that, its pretty tough to say. I know that Star Ocean: The Last hope is for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and is a very good game. It features a great real-time battle system that is really fun. If you have an Xbox 360, another great game is Lost Odyssey. If you have a PS3, the Kingdom Heart series is very good. Its not a total JRPG, but they are very, very good games. Edit: You can play Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 on the PS2, so try those!

  • @ScottishFyre

Star Ocean was practically a movie, but a good one :)

  • @xxSpearMonkeyxx Very true. I loved the cut scenes due to how well they were made, but they were campy at times, but whatever, it was still an awesome game, I easily put 65 hours into the game.

  • Looks wonderful, I just bought a copy.

  • im looking for one never played this before, its either this, or vesperia or resonance of fate and well, honestly not sure which one.

  • I just finnished this game and wasn't impressed. The story was pretty lame. Only thing I liked was the light/dark system but that got old too. As a fairly hard core RPG player I give it a 5 out of 10.

  • I hear some Stanislav Bunin!

  • If anyone is thinking of buying this and has any questions about it you can PM me :)

  • @Fa1nTy i was thinking of buying it, is it good?

  • @Rezzmee Compared to PS3 jRPGS? Yes. It's story is meh, but the game itself is fun and challenging, looks great, good music. Encore mode (NG+) is also extremely difficult.

Get the PS3 version if you can, it's over all better in every way, 2 new characters, 2 new dungeons, etc.

  • thanks for taking your time to do this review, it helped a lot, but... could please be a little less structuralist? it looks like u were dividing japanese RPG from the others. It was really annoying

  • @soulloka That's because most people who play JRPGS hate WRPGs and vise versa. I myself enjoy both equally, but go on any Oblivion or Fallout 3 comments board, comment something about a JRPG and watch the hatred fly.

  • @RReviews lol that is so true.

  • @RReviews

    Point taken

  • I bought this game along with NIER and Blue Dragon, expecting this to be the best. I started with NIER, and I am loving. I didnt expect much from it, as I bought it with no knowledge of it and I knew it got bad reviews, but I LOVE IT! One of my favorites already. I havent played this or blue dragon, but this one looks pretty good too.

  • I absolutely love Eternal Sonata. The only thing I didn't like was that Claves died for like 20 minutes XD I was really sad when she first began to make that SPEECH of hers, but by the end I was like, "JUST DIE ALREADY!"

Oh well. Other than that, this game is a joy haha.

  • this game did horribly on xbox and is now on ps3 and is doing very well

  • @ Aitikles, FoxeoGames

Thanks for the input! I watched a clip of Ninja Gaiden and it looks pretty good I must admit... Last week I was about to buy Blue Dragon when I saw Fallout Vegas was quite attractively priced as well. So I bought that one instead. What I am particularly siked about though is that the shop owner told me TES V is confirmed. I hope that's true... Regards.

  • When he says the ending spirals he wsnt joking, even 4 a japanese creation the only way to explain its crazy spiral is......................................................................... its best compared to neo evangelion's ending, really really big way of showing logic dying at the crapper

  • Wow - look how far IGN has come in terms of quality since 2008.

  • This is a GREAT RPG, I really enjoy it.

  • I played this game over the summer, but for some reason lost interest. I'm thinking about playing again, but starting over. Is there any other games like this, (any other good JRP's) I have tales, lost osyssey, blue dragon, and Star Ocean.

  • @slade6alpha Did you enjoy Blue Dragon? I played the demo, and I have to say that I thought it was terrible. Maybe I judged it too soon.

  • @FoxeoGames NO, it was not that good at all. I enjoy playing slow turn based games to an extent, but Blue Dragon was too much especially as you progress, I never finished it. So no you did not judge too soon.

  • Its not easy? Uh, yes, sir, it is!

  • It really is an EPIC Game. I finished this game 5 times. One in normal mode and 4 times in Encore Mode. ^_^

  • While you're at it, maybe someone can also point me out a game like Darksiders :p

That game is totally wicked. Thanks again. I appreciate it..

    (Dante's Inferno/ Bayonetta/something else? I don't know)

  • @Tripwell

ninja gaiden 2 is pretty good, though a little hard

  • @Tripwell The only game I can think of that is similar to Darksiders is basically the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Darksiders just took so many good things, and put them into one.

  • @FoxeoGames

I forgot, Zelda looks really great too. Unfortunately not on xbox..

  • 2/2

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing Eternal Sonata

and I think it's fun and beautifully made, but it cannot compare to the other two I mentioned. Can somebody give me

some insights and maybe recommend other jrpg's? Much obliged..

  • @Tripwell Tales Of Vesperia, Lost Odessy, Star Ocean The Last Hope Resonance Of Fate(JRPGs) RPGs Fable 3, Dragon Age Origins, Fallout New Vegas.

  • @DevilKidGames

Thanks alot DevilKid :] I know I will like Fable 3 and Fallout Vegas for sure, I played the previous ones. But I will check the jrpgs out first... 'cause those are new to me.

    Regards

  • 1/2

Dear all, I bought this game last week and have progressed to chapter 3 or 4 (Forte Castle dungeon).

Eternal Sonata is my first jrpg and I was wondering, are all jrpg's like this? Meaning: Linear gameplay,

turn-based fights, only a few people you can talk to and objects you can use/investigate. For rpg's I am used to

playing games like Oblivion and Fallout which I totally love.

  • @Tripwell JRPGs vary quite a bit, but they do have a more linear story that unfolds much like a movie or book. It is about a finely crafted tale that is revealed to the player over time. Games like Oblivion are about you creating that tale, not just discovering it.

Other JRPGs do have more options, paths, and side-quests/features though.

  • 0:01

  • no way was this better than ffXIII!

  • @shikaidude that was the worst final fantasy......

  • @Daibron apparently you've never played final fantasy XIV.
