Thats not exactly what I meant, just wondered how for example, the US airforce would have done against Iraq/Afghanistan, if they have Gepards. Btw none of those countries have enough ZSU-23s or other AA guns/missiles/radar systems to really stop a tier1 airforce, maybe with the exception of Iran.
@ml219 You can have thousands of ZSU 23s and you wont stop a state of the art air force. I don't get your question. The Gepard is much more modern than the ZSU 23 and as far as i know, an enemy is much harder to defeat, if he has got modern weapons instead of old sovjet stuff that even the russians don't use anymore. So yes, Iraq would have been a very different game, if it would have had modern western weapon systems....
that is a leopard chassis, its built on that because the framework is better than its predecessor the Lep 2, I know this because Im an 0352 in the USMC, anti tank missile man, errrahhhhh

@tzebra Uhhm thats untrue. air defense forces have created multiple tactics to trap planes, equipped with anti radiation. often they are linked to each other, and only one uses it'S RADAR at a time, while the other ones take out the plane. Another tactic is blinking, when they only use their RADAR for a second or two, move, use RADAR, move. It's not that easy, to deal with a combined modern anti aircraft system....
@ml219 The ZSU 23 is inferior to the Gepard. The Gepard was the first anti aircraft tank in the world, that could fire with equal accuracy, whether it's moving or stationary. And there is no need to adopt more cannons on the system, the Shilka has 23mm cannons and the Gepard 35mm cannons. After the Gepard was build, the russians copied it wich resultet in the 2S6 Tunguska, wich had and still has multiple technical problems. Also the Gepard2 is equipped with Stinger missiles

What is the radius of protection that the GEPARD can provide in open ground? Also would an enemy aircraft not detect the heat and shape signature of the GEPARD? I would think this kind of ground target would be easy to identify. How would the GEPARD protect itself from an anti radar missile?
@swedishvolvo: If you only leave the electronic warfare systems on, the heat signature should be virtually unnoticable. Shape signature could be minimized by applying microwave-absorbing coating.
Don't forget that it still is in fact a Leopard 1 chassis. Even though it has been upgraded a few times, it's fairly old. Eventually it will be replaced by either a Leopard 2 (or next-gen)-based SPAAG if the MANTIS project fails. Still I'm sure it beats the more modern Tunguska.

Cool story. Back in the real world, trying to take out a competently used air defense system is a whole lot harder. NATO fired over 700 ARAD missiles in the 1999 Kosovo air campaign, plus more than 200 other munitions expended on SEAD. They managed to kill about a dozen serb air defense vehicles with all that, despite the serbs most modern SAMs coming from the early 80's.

The Gepard has a great rep even if it is being phased out. I'd like to see the US build something like this since we really don't have anything with the capability of this or the Russian Pantsir system.

The Gepard was the first AA vehicle worldwide, that could search, track and fire on the move. When the russians saw it the first time, they hurried to develope one by themselves. The 2S6 Tunguska. But it was not worked out and not equal to Gepard. Just a failed try to keep up with western tech. The 2S6 was even removed temporarily from service during the 80's because of several critical problems.
I hope this weapon come with radiation suits and oxygen tanks because ww3 is on the way and it is a nuclear one. It will be hard to shoot anything down if one can not breath the air because of radiation fall out.

Under Radar? what do you mean? the Hollywood Radar border of 500ft? Maybe objects below 500ft are hard to detect for stationary air space control radar stations, but not for a mobile Anti aircraft / Radar vehicle. The Gepard can detect objects below 20ft, thats about 6,3meters. Does BrahMos fly that deep at Mach 5? Yes, hehe. The first tree in it's flightpath will take it down and no one will need any anti aircraft vehicles. Gepard can destroy incoming MORTAR GRENADES, as well as your BrahMos.

Besides, I don't think the Brahmos was even meant to carry nukes. It actually has a rather small payload. In spite of it's land attack ability, I think this missile was designed with the sole idea of being a counter to the American super carrier fleet. Against a ship, the raw kinetic impact will make up a lot of it's smaller warhead and it's speed help avoid antimissile systems

I was one of the gunner members in the eighties. Its quite simple. You dont actually target the aircraft it self but just in front of its flying path so it will fly through a cloud of metal.

As for tanks, people have been saying that for 50 years. Recent advances in active defence systems means tanks will be around for a few more decades. In both Turkey and Germany there is a lack of political will to endanger soldiers lives in NATO combat missions, thus limiting both countries' military relevance.

Cool story. Back in the real world, trying to take out a competently used air defense system is a whole lot harder. NATO fired over 700 ARAD missiles in the 1999 Kosovo air campaign, plus more than 200 other munitions expended on SEAD. They managed to kill about a dozen serb air defense vehicles with all that, despite the serbs most modern SAMs coming from the early 80's.

The only suggestion I have is to put the search radar in a dome so that it can be camoflauged. The human eye tends to pick up movement. Also, if the Gepard is going through brush, the dome encasing would deflect branches better. Just an idea. Really cool tank. May I have one? Please? :-)

The Gepard has a great rep even if it is being phased out. I'd like to see the US build something like this since we really don't have anything with the capability of this or the Russian Pantsir system.

The Gepard was the first AA vehicle worldwide, that could search, track and fire on the move. When the russians saw it the first time, they hurried to develope one by themselves. The 2S6 Tunguska. But it was not worked out and not equal to Gepard. Just a failed try to keep up with western tech. The 2S6 was even removed temporarily from service during the 80's because of several critical problems.

Under Radar? what do you mean? the Hollywood Radar border of 500ft? Maybe objects below 500ft are hard to detect for stationary air space control radar stations, but not for a mobile Anti aircraft / Radar vehicle. The Gepard can detect objects below 20ft, thats about 6,3meters. Does BrahMos fly that deep at Mach 5? Yes, hehe. The first tree in it's flightpath will take it down and no one will need any anti aircraft vehicles. Gepard can destroy incoming MORTAR GRENADES, as well as your BrahMos.

Besides, I don't think the Brahmos was even meant to carry nukes. It actually has a rather small payload. In spite of it's land attack ability, I think this missile was designed with the sole idea of being a counter to the American super carrier fleet. Against a ship, the raw kinetic impact will make up a lot of it's smaller warhead and it's speed help avoid antimissile systems

Advanced electronics allow to calculate the ballistic trajectories that bullets need to take in order to hit an aircraft. In most cases, guns are only used for short range targets. Their fast rate of fire combined with accuracy insures a good chance of hitting the aircraft multiple times. Missiles are used for Medium-Long ranges.

No your right... distance and altitude of the aircraft is one of the challenges in air defence. thats why you need also high altitude defence mechanisms to complete your air defences. The german gepard or the dutch PRTL is [was] just one of the air defence components in the air defence system
