Thanks for the Demo, Really helped a lot since it's my first time using this item for everyday opening. As you may know it was rated one of the top 100 gadgets of all-time on the History Channel. For useful and reliable.. Blessed and Prosperous New Year keep the videos coming.
P.S. I'll have to get a Swiss Army Can Opener Next Love the P51 so Far.
@jeffbobmicrowave You can get them online for pretty cheap. If you search google you can find them for 35 cents. You can also go to your local army / navy store and they should have them (assuming you're in the USA).
@assassin616 I wore my P-38 around my neck on my dog tags for a while....just don't wear it under your shirt. It poked me when it opened up and I rolled over while sleeping (I wear my dog tags 24/7, and usually under my shirt, so I guess I deserved that...)
as in your swiss knife video ...your lifting the blade from the lid each time, that's not really the way it was designed, it's more like a ratcheting motion and goes very quick and doesn't leave a bunch of dangerous jagged points sticking out.. keep practicing , you will get it
I just moved to a new place and picked one of these up at the dollar store with some other necessities. Is there any easy way to use these things on a can of tuna? There's no lip on those damned cans!
Heheh, I hate those openers. Victorinox swiss army knife all the way for the job:))). And if it is the rectangular stupid can of sardines, and you screw it up, use the blade:P.
der der der p-38 der civilian der der - I friggin' hate people that leave comments like this. Newsflash clown!! P-38's have'nt been used in the military for decades!!
If you measure the P-38 you will find it is 38 mm in length and the P-51 is 51 mm in length. That's how they got their numbers. Don't know why they have the letter P. maybe womeone knows.
It works a lot better if you don't pierce a new hole with each stroke. Just pierce once and keep working it around using the cutting edge instead of the point.
If you'd like to get one of these little cutters, log onto ''Georgia-Outfitters'' - He's got a lot of them and will give a wonderful deal to veterans or servicemen who would like to replace one they lost or be introduced to this marvelous bit of history, I 'm sending some with my son to Iraq. He also has a lot for collectors.
My son picked up one a P38 years ago when he was around 12, he was and is, a big military buff (he's in Iraq now). When he brought it home I was immediately horrified as it looked like a razor blade and hid it away (typical Mom) - but since then have even used it myself - really cool little device.
I Absolutly love bushes beans im a real skinny person and i can eat a whole can if im hungry enough but nive video on how to use the can opener i think that the once on the swiss army knife is easier because it has a bigger handle to grip on but nice video
It was a good demo, and I'm glad someone is out there to show the world how to use them, but exactly the best method in my opinion - I prefer not to let the point leave the can once it goes in - then it's just wiggle your wrist and turn the can.
well any constructive critisizm is welcome, thanks for the suggestion, my demo was not the fasted but I didnt know it was a speed contest...BUT your right...I will give you that!
i got one of these with a fire starting kit my dad got me for xmas. i had no idea what it was, i actually tried to strike it against the fire steel to get a spark... now i know what it is and how to use it. Thanks for the vids they are really helpful. Keep up the good work!
i read a ww2 book and i had no idea what those were so i went to the army navy store and asked i can open a can i world record time well... foe one of those at least
My friend and I are in Finland at the moment and couldn't figure out how this bloody thing works. Thanks to your video, we know now. :-) You saved our dinner!
those things are sooo annoying to use... i have a bunch from australian army rat-packs and i just hate opening cans with them. the ones ive seen are fairly funny aswell, they have little spoons on the end to eat stuff with, dont know why you would though.
You know I am not sure...I think so, but it could be aluminum, but I think its stainless because aluminum mightr be too soft and woudl bend easier...so I woudl say stainless if I had to guess but I am not 100% sure on that...
if you wiki' field ration eating device ' theres an entry with a pic - exactly what I have , but the 1 in the pic has had most of the gold anodizing worn off , you can still make it out a little
It's called FRED (Field Ration Eating Device, F*cking Ridiculous Eating Device) And was issued to the Australian military. Coleman sells them to the public, in 2-packs. Search "Coleman Can Opener."
I have a P-51 and I love using mine, especially while camping. Mine is a little different than yours though, my has a little indentation at the bottom so it could be used as a small spoon; it also has a bottle opener at the top. It is still small enough to be put in your pocket and not notice its there.
To the contrary, the Bush's beans look GOOD. They used to have outstanding TV commercials too.
Some years back I used to get P-38's for about 15 cents each at gun shows and would buy them by the handfuls to pass out to my friends, both survival and non-suvival folks alike. They all loved to have them.
lol, I just used it as an example, of course there are easier ways to get to the beans, lol, but using these are nostalgic to me and trivial, brings me back to boy scouts, lol, its not the easiest way but it is a fun way...
lol i got like 6 of thos i take them with me wen i go camping i love them but hers a tip dont put the on ur keychane cuz wen u set down on them they go thro ur leg but if ther like hanging out and u set down on a cher u can cut the fabric on the chair as u can tell iv done that once or twice lol
ALOT of people use these with ease, I happen to like the can opener in a victorinox more because you have such a large handle to hold on to, but these weigh nothgin and cost so little people love them...
I feel pretty accomplished now, I just opened my first can with my P-38 after having it for like 2 years. Thanks cutlerylover

and here is a tip campers
if you leave at least 5 cm of the lid (the top part your opening) alone ie don't use the sharp pointy thing, you have a handle
well when you fold out the lid.
