  • I feel pretty accomplished now, I just opened my first can with my P-38 after having it for like 2 years. Thanks cutlerylover

  • Thanks for the Demo, Really helped a lot since it's my first time using this item for everyday opening. As you may know it was rated one of the top 100 gadgets of all-time on the History Channel. For useful and reliable.. Blessed and Prosperous New Year keep the videos coming.

P.S. I'll have to get a Swiss Army Can Opener Next Love the P51 so Far.

  • Thanks

  • im watching a review for can openers....

  • Thank you for the video. I've got a P51 and now I know how to use it.

  • @cutlerylover That wouldnt happen to be a Mallin Shelby P-38. i have a MSp38, and it looks exactly like that one. or is it a different kind

  • my grand father passed recently and i found his p-38 so its pretty bad ass

  • These were invented during WWII to help the soldiers open cans. It's pretty awesome.

  • Nicely done!

  • Seriously thanks man. Took me a while to figure it out your video helped me out.

  • i got a bunch at home along with some p51's

  • A friend of mine found one of these in his house,

But we didn't know what it was so he threw it away.

How much do these cost so i can tell him how much he threw away?

(after seeing this i really want it back lol)

  • @jeffbobmicrowave You can get them online for pretty cheap. If you search google you can find them for 35 cents. You can also go to your local army / navy store and they should have them (assuming you're in the USA).

  • @Slothman608 Oh thats ok then im gonna get one asap lol

  • We only have these small ones here in Finland (me and everyone i know). Exept it doesn't have the hinge.

  • Right on Cutlery. Keep the videos coming.

  • Great for camping and as a backup in the kitchen.

  • i got one at a gun show for like 50 cents

but it is a very good little can opener

  • i very good friend from over there in america gave me a p38, i wear it around my neck, on parracord

  • @assassin616 I wore my P-38 around my neck on my dog tags for a while....just don't wear it under your shirt. It poked me when it opened up and I rolled over while sleeping (I wear my dog tags 24/7, and usually under my shirt, so I guess I deserved that...)

  • as in your swiss knife video ...your lifting the blade from the lid each time, that's not really the way it was designed, it's more like a ratcheting motion and goes very quick and doesn't leave a bunch of dangerous jagged points sticking out.. keep practicing , you will get it

  • Cool, but it seems kinda labbor intensive.

  • Hmm, not a fastest way to open, but it takes less space then knife, which is lightspeed tool to open cans.

  • i like p 38

  • I have a poor college student retired army buddy who uses his everyday and he's a pro now lol

  • I just moved to a new place and picked one of these up at the dollar store with some other necessities. Is there any easy way to use these things on a can of tuna? There's no lip on those damned cans!

  • Heheh, I hate those openers. Victorinox swiss army knife all the way for the job:))). And if it is the rectangular stupid can of sardines, and you screw it up, use the blade:P.

  • and here is a tip campers

if you leave at least 5 cm of the lid (the top part your opening) alone ie don't use the sharp pointy thing, you have a handle

well when you fold out the lid.

  • post your own video on the right way to use it and add it as a video response...

  • der der der p-38 der civilian der der - I friggin' hate people that leave comments like this. Newsflash clown!! P-38's have'nt been used in the military for decades!!

  • @morganjp94123456 ok wheres the tutorial ?? hmmm

  • Thanks for the video, I'm building an emergency kit and wanted to know how to use one of these before I purchase one. Great help!

  • Can I open a Surplus Spam Can of ammo with this?

  • Already tried it on 7.62X54R can - it didn't work. =/

  • If you live in de you caN get them for 99 cents at the hocassen farmers market

  • If you live in de you can get them for 99 cents at the

  • can you open a non twist bottle of beer with it?

  • yes not a problem

well takes a bit of effort but yes you can

  • My P-38's blade is a little wobbly, but my P-51's isn't. Does this happen to yours to?

  • coordination = -2

  • If you measure the P-38 you will find it is 38 mm in length and the P-51 is 51 mm in length. That's how they got their numbers. Don't know why they have the letter P. maybe womeone knows.

  • i have an original one from the war. my dadfound it at my grandads house and gave it to me

  • It works a lot better if you don't pierce a new hole with each stroke. Just pierce once and keep working it around using the cutting edge instead of the point.

  • what was that noise at 2:52?

    sounds like a fart lol

  • lol I didnt eat the beans until after the video...haha no it was just the noise of it rubbing on the can, lol..

  • I'm just very immature :D

  • If you'd like to get one of these little cutters, log onto ''Georgia-Outfitters'' - He's got a lot of them and will give a wonderful deal to veterans or servicemen who would like to replace one they lost or be introduced to this marvelous bit of history, I 'm sending some with my son to Iraq. He also has a lot for collectors.

  • My son picked up one a P38 years ago when he was around 12, he was and is, a big military buff (he's in Iraq now). When he brought it home I was immediately horrified as it looked like a razor blade and hid it away (typical Mom) - but since then have even used it myself - really cool little device.

  • Can the blade be turned over to the other side? I'm left handed but would like to be about to use one of these.

  • im left handed too but they are really easy

  • Good Video, Thanks!!

    TEXAS

  • countycomm uses this vid now to

  • I Absolutly love bushes beans im a real skinny person and i can eat a whole can if im hungry enough but nive video on how to use the can opener i think that the once on the swiss army knife is easier because it has a bigger handle to grip on but nice video

  • P 38 - 38 Punches for a C-Rat Can...

Best thing since sliced bread !

    German translation:

38 Bewegungen bis die Dose auf ist

Beste Erfindung seit Weißbrot in Scheiben

  • the p-38 is for individual use and the p-51 is for larger mess hall cans. they are for war time use back in the day. i keep a p-38 on my key chain.

  • good to hear you stuck through the whole vid...

  • It was a good demo, and I'm glad someone is out there to show the world how to use them, but exactly the best method in my opinion - I prefer not to let the point leave the can once it goes in - then it's just wiggle your wrist and turn the can.

  • well any constructive critisizm is welcome, thanks for the suggestion, my demo was not the fasted but I didnt know it was a speed contest...BUT your right...I will give you that!

  • @kenzalhunter it is, because he didnt open it all the way with the P-38..

smart ass to your starky ass comment..

  • this would only be good for like camping?

  • im thinking about getting one

does the 51's ease of use make up for how much more space it takes up on a key ring?

    and now im hungry

  • I think the comofrt of the 51 is worh the tiny bit extra size...I prefer them for somethgin you wioudl use often...

  • can you do a review on the peanut lighter from countycomm? i saw you had one on your keychain on a lanyard video. can you please?

  • i got one of these with a fire starting kit my dad got me for xmas. i had no idea what it was, i actually tried to strike it against the fire steel to get a spark... now i know what it is and how to use it. Thanks for the vids they are really helpful. Keep up the good work!

  • Cheers for posting, I have one for camping so i'm glad I know no how to use it now.

  • jeff i hate you you make me hungry:P

  • i read a ww2 book and i had no idea what those were so i went to the army navy store and asked i can open a can i world record time well... foe one of those at least

  • so good for hikin? What if like idk dust or like shrapnel get in it?

  • you cna dunk this completely in mud and it will still work fine...

  • can YOU SEND ONE TO ME IN THE NETHERLANDS:

  • so like good to have when hikin?

  • Moi!

My friend and I are in Finland at the moment and couldn't figure out how this bloody thing works. Thanks to your video, we know now. :-) You saved our dinner!

  • those things are sooo annoying to use... i have a bunch from australian army rat-packs and i just hate opening cans with them. the ones ive seen are fairly funny aswell, they have little spoons on the end to eat stuff with, dont know why you would though.

  • yeah I saw those as well...

  • Thanks for the demo. I always wondered how they worked.

  • Fascinating, I was wondering how this thing worked. Is it made of stainless steel?

  • You know I am not sure...I think so, but it could be aluminum, but I think its stainless because aluminum mightr be too soft and woudl bend easier...so I woudl say stainless if I had to guess but I am not 100% sure on that...

  • ALL YOUR HOTDOGS ARE BELONG TO US!!

  • I have a couple of these , but mine have a spooned end , so you can use it as your eating utensile , if you have to.

  • Cool, yeah someone had just said the same thgin, that their P-51 has a bottle opener as well as a spooned end...

  • lol guess I didnt read that far...

if you wiki' field ration eating device ' theres an entry with a pic - exactly what I have , but the 1 in the pic has had most of the gold anodizing worn off , you can still make it out a little

  • hmm interesting, I have to see if I cna find those online...

  • It's called FRED (Field Ration Eating Device, F*cking Ridiculous Eating Device) And was issued to the Australian military. Coleman sells them to the public, in 2-packs. Search "Coleman Can Opener."

  • I have a P-51 and I love using mine, especially while camping. Mine is a little different than yours though, my has a little indentation at the bottom so it could be used as a small spoon; it also has a bottle opener at the top. It is still small enough to be put in your pocket and not notice its there.

  • Oh cool I never saw a veriosn like that but it sounds even nicer!

  • I'll make a video of it soon.

  • Ok, cool!

  • that's really cool,

the lid of the can looked like a ninja star when you took it off. lol

  • i meant the opener is cool.

  • haha, I know, thanks...

  • cool

  • To the contrary, the Bush's beans look GOOD. They used to have outstanding TV commercials too.

Some years back I used to get P-38's for about 15 cents each at gun shows and would buy them by the handfuls to pass out to my friends, both survival and non-suvival folks alike. They all loved to have them.

  • yeah, people tend to love these little things, lol...

  • Dang, you must really want dem' beans.

  • lol, I just used it as an example, of course there are easier ways to get to the beans, lol, but using these are nostalgic to me and trivial, brings me back to boy scouts, lol, its not the easiest way but it is a fun way...

  • Id put a piece of duck tape on the folding edge before you put it on your keys so it wont tear up your pocket or your leg. Ouch!

  • Well I keep it on ym spare keys that stay in ym bag, but thats a good tip!

  • interesting concept my dad had one in the vietnam war

  • Nice, the P-38 goes back to WWII, infact I think they are called the P-38 because it took 38 pushes to open a C-rations can back then...

  • i think thay are called p-38 because it is 38mm long, and same for the p-51 being 51mm.

  • thos come in handy very often always use mine while camping

  • yes they do...

  • lol i got like 6 of thos i take them with me wen i go camping i love them but hers a tip dont put the on ur keychane cuz wen u set down on them they go thro ur leg but if ther like hanging out and u set down on a cher u can cut the fabric on the chair as u can tell iv done that once or twice lol

  • haha, yeah these thgins are just so cheap you can't not buy them to try them out, lol...

  • it looks like the one on the swiss army knife that you made a review on before was much easier, this one looks too long...like the blade is too long.

  • These function pretty much the same way...

  • nice first comment and they are vary cheep to

  • Yes, very cheap...both less than a dollar each...

  • looks tedious

  • ALOT of people use these with ease, I happen to like the can opener in a victorinox more because you have such a large handle to hold on to, but these weigh nothgin and cost so little people love them...
