I firstly heard this aria more than 50 years ago on 78vynil . The impression it produced on me then was with me all these years. It's my second time. I am sure no singer could or can do it better than magnificient Nicolai Ghiaurov!

I saw Ghiaurov sing this at the Met in 1978 with a cast including Milnes, Giacomini,Scotto,Horne and Morris as the Grand Inquisitor.The applause after the soliloquoy was so prolonged that he actually took a bow mid performance. I've never seen that before or since.
