  • WTF IS THIS!!!? he spent 3 minutes skimming through "his version"

and spends the next 4 minutes fucking about as if i cant practice by myself?

  • By the way guys, if you can be arsed to watch somone play it full speed and learn from that, just take the capo off (its un needed) and then play like this kid, he PLAYS LIKE A FUCKING GOD unlike somone else, EHEM this video -.- /watch?v=tk-210gJ34E&feature=related

  • You also hold a lot of strings which arnt needed AND also decided to take out a chunk of the song at video 3/4 i think :/ just telling ya, it could be a lot neater.

  • WOW you really scuffed up the jump from the 5th fret to a G -.- im not even sure YOU could play this song the hole way through

  • bad lesson

  • i have seen so many variations of this song both in tab and on video, i dont think there is ONE absolute correct way to play this, but I think Mike has done well with his video. much appreciated mate.

  • just watch it over, and play it until you got it.

  • The hard part isn't plucking two strings at the start, it's working out what on earth is happening after that!

  • heres a tip:

in this fast picking, its easier to follow the notes with your ears than to follow the tabs with your eyes.

  • At 4:06 why do you have a ringer on the 4th string if your not using it?

You play the 5th string and the 1st 2nd and 3rd string. Anyone else notice that?

  • can you do alternative part five with the cords you play, with the bar cords

  • As soon as I know how to play this I'll put up a lesson explaining every single note. :)

  • @sailxonxmusic have you got it yet??

  • I like this video but I don't understand the second part of the discordant noises. the first and third are easy but you didn't explain the second at all

  • ... for the record, I Liked this video and I am thankful for his instructions... but its so annoying how he says he'll go slow but doesnt do it... it's also lame he spends some consideration to warn us about the bass note @1:02 but why not warn us on every note? Like the part that comes after that? It'd be great if he used that line for every note "and [insert note here] will get you." And this note, and that note, and this note... I'd appreciate it. But Thank You

  • @SuperDanielPlus You can ALWAYS go back and forth in a youtube video, just be observant.

  • second time through is so hard to learn cause he doesn't explain it at all..

  • Comment removed

  • Mike, again thank you so much for your generosity of sharing your enormous Guitar knowledge with us. However, I have got to tell you that Part 5, 2nd and 3rd bits were a bit to fast. It took more time than usual to figure it out clearly but I think I am there now. I wish you could have provided some Tabs as well.

    Cheers mate

    :)

  • i stop here the last time, but now after some blues/jazz lessons i could beat it... is nice to look back an realize you are a little bit near in this long road to the mountain... ;)

faith to everyone that is having hard times with this lesson, because is beautiful, it has the atmosphere of a medieval song and would sound great when you play it..

  • The second and third parts aren't explained very well.

  • theres no more giving up i came this far!

  • Great Mike nice tutorial mate cheers

  • woow woow woow to fast :S

  • slow down :)

  • man i wish i would have noticed you playing the third bass string a while ago..... now i have to break a habbit :,,,,(

  • 2:44 not the E String, you have to play A String with the thumb..

  • i dont get this lesson, you did not explane how to play it ... you just show how you are playing it... i watched 20 times this video and still i dont know how to play.

  • @klechetor If you can't learn it after watching 20 times, higher your skill and then return.

  • @klechetor try another songs with em chord and then watch how to play this song. also im mexican n i dont speak english at all n i understand the lesson, so u need more skills

  • this song amazes my classmates :) I love learning each llesson and playing thew whole song learning a new part every day .

  • This is driving me mad. So hard! Still not sure of the g c f bm. I've looked at different lessons, they don't seem right either.( I'm not saying you or they wrong at all) I suppose it will come together in the end. I would like to see you play it all throughout. Thankyou.

  • Hello. Thanks for the lessons. I've got this far and all seemed very good. But I've watched videos of others playing this bit including Mason Williams and they play it differently. With more Barr type chords. Have you simplified it like with the g c f and b#? Thanks again.

  • thanks so much for these tutorials,, its just you spend ages explaining a simple bit then just play a complex section we ve never heard before without really mentioning it thanks though i am learning slowly

  • thank you very much sir!

    nice series.

  • wtf are you doing?! you aren't even showing us everything you're doing!!

  • @minda272 if you cant see what he is doing, you better learn som more guitar before you are trying this :)

  • @minda272 your suppose to look at the tabs, see WHAT he is actually playing and then watch to see HOW he plays it on the video

  • Trying to learn this on and off for a couple of years... a bit confusing when some of the tabs are different to the vids, but all part of the fun I suppose - keeps us on our toes... Rock on Mike!

  • me either. im going all the way!

  • can you please go over this tricky bit much slower and more clearly pleease.

  • way to fast u should really slow down :(

  • i can't belive it only took me two days

  • There is a green ad insert covering your finger shapes... Can I get rid of it? Thank you Mr Herberts for this song... I have made it this far, bumbling along, but seeing the past lessons smoothing out as I go over them over and again.

  • I don't understand how someone can go from explaining all the notes in his previous lessons to suddenly skipping many. Not that I can't figure them out myself, but still, I like the hard work being done for me. Anyway these are all good lessons, and I'm glad I stumbled upon them.

  • YERR THE FIRST TIME THROUGH YOU EXPLANED NOTHING 2ND TIME THROUGH STILL NOTHIN 3RD TIME THROUGH STILL NOTHING AND THE REST IS BULL CRAP NO EFFENCE MAKE THIS PART SLOWER AND EXPLAIN IT MORE PLZ SLOW SLOW SLOW UR TO FAST ^.^

  • maybe good player but bad tecnique with the left hand...

  • why is there more views in part 5 than 4?

  • @XxizikbxX cuz its the hard part.. so people watch it more

  • honestly, i think tabbs are easier to read then watching this videoo. i just watch it to see how my fingering is suppose to look like (: yayy, i cant believe i acctually got this farr. im never giving upp !! haha

  • Made it to lesson 5 yup yup

  • im getting all of this before but when you go through thwe first part of the video i need to take some time to learn the bass becasue he does not go through it clearly enough

  • to be honest i dont kno what all this fuss is about and why people are complaining.

this is by far the best video lesson online (not to mention its free) and ive learned every part since up 2 this point =]

  • OMG that green bar is pissing me of?!it's always in the way!! ARGH... great vids thought and like every one says. there are some few mistakes. i can't point them out but they are there, i can hear it from the original. else good work :D

  • Up to this point it's exactly how mason williams, eric clapton and any cover you see online plays it, but on this video or "Part B in ultimate guitar Eric Clapton version" it's different, I know this version is easier to play, but if we made it this far, I think we all want to play it exactly how it's suppose to, don't want to waste a week or weeks on this and then learn 20% of it the cop out way, does anybody know a video for just this section thought the right way????

  • @abepardo I agree please let me know when you fine another lesson with the correct fingering, because i don't want to learn this bit if its not the correct way.

  • i really like your lessons and i will follow them to the last part , but i think that everyone should also listen to the original part because there are several mistakes , mostly tempo , ive never had lessons ive learnt whatever i know from the internet so i cant really judge u or anyone its just what my ear says :) once again thank you for teaching us this "tricky" song !! Rock on :

  • I've been playing for one year, and when I tell guitarists, who have been playing for many years, that I'm learning Classical Gas, their jaw drops and they look at me like I'm crazy to attempt this so early in the game, but then I play them what I've learned so far and they are blown away, and ALL thanks goes to you Mr. Herberts, because I would never have even thought about attempting such a difficult piece without the brilliant guidance you have offered here. Thank you very Much Sir! : )

  • @hashthedealer haha how do you think they react when I tell them I've been playing 4 months? And i'm this far into the song, been learning it for about an hour a day for 3-4 days. I'm quite proud of my efforts.

  • Classical gas gets better every time I hear it. I learned everything up to lesson five and it sounds OK - and I still don't know what a A minor chord is :p

  • sorry bro but you rushing through this part i found...... still good teacher but i thought you were rushing..

  • great lessons. really easy to learn from

  • Turn on the "transcribe audio" closed captioning function. It's hilarious! It doesn't work at all and says the funniest things. For instance, one place it says, "let's start this section of tissue", and "it's just getting between being sexually active", and "the flock to the chief justice came to power". LOL!!

  • "I have a sister...I mean that's ridiculous."

  • dude you are awesome!

I never took guitar lessons, and I was just playing some chords, but now I can play this easily! thx!

  • I'm am grateful for v ideos like this.

  • man im havng hard time in dis part

  • 6:30 on haunted me

  • honestly not explained at all what the hell we do with the bass notes but oh wellz.

  • this is hardest part for me so far :D

  • @blatrla but its so much fun to play this when you get it done lol

  • These videos are as good as gold. thank you so much

  • one more time Mike, your videos are helping me so much, Thaks a lot

  • i also have troubles at 1.35

i am trying to write down the tabs, but i just cant get the way that he is plucking the strings

i tried getting the tabs, but there are way to many

versions of this, if someone has the tabs to THIS version, please let me know, it really important that i know

  • Read the info, he tells you how to get the tab.

  • oh man, i got it already^^

i tabed it myself, and shortly after that

i saw the info, and it pissed me of a bit -.-

but i performed it in public already, watch my vids ;)

  • this part is difficult.

  • Comment removed

  • at 4:00, you say 2nd string 4th fret....i think you meant 2nd string 3rd fret right? ive been following all your videos so far and they have been really helpful! thanks

  • I have followed along perfectly fine until this video; he is going WAY to fast for me so that I cannot see what he is plucking. Could someone please help me with what he is plucking at 1:35? Please and thank you!

  • the tabs are in the description

    page 3 & 4 cover this section

Also for the second and third time through the tab shows the base note to be on the 5th string but in the video he plays it on the 6th string

  • He gives the tabs in the description. Its a wonder how you've gotten this far without them :D

  • use your ear its the best tool

  • i can play it so easy.....

it was my first ever piece that i learnt and the bar chords are tho only thing i cant play....

  • this is a hard song, but he is going a bit too fast for me, the last two lessons where fine, but this one is a tick too fast

  • second time through and third are way to fast... I can't recognize what you're playing

  • Is it just me or if you cant do bar chords this song is a little out of your dept?

    this is a great video

    its a hard song

    get over it....

  • I sense some one is a little full of themselfs, and headhunter - you are a idiot. you dont know anything about notes. let alone be the one to judge if something is wrong or not.

    my 2 cents.

  • listen this is one of the hardest classical songs to learn...if your so new to guitar that you dont even know bar chords this isnt a song you should be learning...of course have a bash off it but dont post retarded comments about "not explaining properly" and all that kinda shit..

By the sounds of things you are one of those people...so no im not full of myself im just not a fucking moaning moran.

  • Comment removed

  • there's no explanation of how to play the second and third parts of the first bit apart from "this is how it goes"

  • yeah at 4:04 it should be 2nd string 3rd fret not 4th

  • 4:04 - 4th string 2nd fret 2nd string 4th fret? o.O

  • he's showing 2 video's simultanously and your not impressed. If you don't like his explanation then go bang your head against the wall trying to figure out the finger positions on the tab.

  • lol what he said! (pokes tongue out)

  • no offense but u dont explain anithing u only show a slow cover of the song

  • I have got to say that he is talking less and less about what he's actually doing. The barring of strings 1 and 2 at the 5th fret for example. Having said that i have got problems with bridging over the first string with 3rd or 4th finger while my 1st finger is on string 1 and two of fret 5. Suggestions anybody? Thanx

  • you can never take this down!!!! it's invaluable!!!!!

  • Good tips overal.. Just one question though: why don't you use the left pinky, which is technically the correct way. You prefer "freestyle" ?

  • It's not a tough song, takes at least a week to learn if you are dedicated to, it took me fluently after 3 days and about 2 hours of practice each day. It's a relly fun song, and I hope ppl find the same success as I did.

  • Hi helisell !

I need to thank you alot for helping us out here!

Since i started these lessons of yours i also developed my own version this one :)

I did play and practise hours on end , but now got rewarded with bind-folded precision!

Something i dreamt about for years and only now i really am enjoying my play !

Also when i saw an older intervieuw of tommy emmanual i got inspired like never before..Thanks alot , really , it meant alot to me !

    Wkr

  • Hi, first of all, thanks a lot for your lessons, i'm learning a lot with you!

I only like to say that i'm picking the note on the 8th fret with my pinky, which i find easier due to less streching.

Maybe it can help some of you!

    Greetings from Switzerland

    Smaug

  • I assume your a fan of the Hobbit

  • ive learnt through to here in half an hr and can play at speed but im lost at 2.30 can play 1st and 3rd riff part but im lost what your doing on 2nd maybe a lil blurry and too fast anyway good job has helped heaps thanks.

  • All your video's about 'howto play Classical Gas' are saving me a lot of time !! Thks !! Youre video's are awesome !

  • judging by the reduction in views i may verywell be one of the very few left at the end of this series of lessons, BOOYAH

  • Right - Lets turn this into a competition, because all I care about is that I play better than you.

  • i dont think its hard at all lol, i just went through lessons 3 to five in the last 15 minutes

    lol

  • this lesson isnt anywhere near as good as the first 4 but it is still brilliant!!!!

  • u r the best teacher in Youtube, thanx for a great lesson!!

  • is he barring strings 1 and 2 and fret 5?

  • Barring strings 1 & 2 at fret 5, yes.

  • anyone notice lesson 1 had 700,000 views but lesson 5 has only 118,000?

  • lol probably because everyone gave up.... i made it this far im certainly not

  • @JT4459

Same... I made it this far I aint giving up.

    lmfaoo

  • I agree, the depth of teaching has been reduced as videos proggress, but even now I cant find anything better than this

  • well i think his teaching suites the level of difficulty the song at this point

  • Well spotted! If the number of views keeps reducing at this rate, there will only be half a douzen of us left by the time we get to lesson 10. I've got this far, so I'm not giving up!

  • i gave up for a bit..got lazy, but now im back!! wish me luck

  • @godsarmy105 probably people got lazy and decided not to continue through the song.

  • @godsarmy105 allot of people stop after lesson 1 i think

  • @godsarmy105 yea i did, i guess alot of people gave up.

  • @godsarmy105 people gave up after lesson 1

  • Im a noob but not that bad.. i came so far in a few days.. but im still struggling with the ''big chords, ( not only this song) how do you guys do that ? do you dislocate your indexfinger?

  • @wiewatwaarhoe i dont know what u mean by dislocate but yeah i know how u feel....they sound horrible at first but dont worry if u try then u will get better

just make sure ur fingers r in the right place

  • @godsarmy105

this is because previous lessons was better, this lesson is too fast, and author doesnt speak detail what he plays... he just play it and you must look from second to second what exactly he plays.

  • I'm gettin' er'...

  • up until now has been very good explaining stuff , poor in comparison at demonstrating this bit though

  • super. thanks for not forgetting barre chords. im so excited because of learning this. its been about two months. i guess theres one more to go to finish this. beautifull

  • Um. I followed the previous lessons flawlessly and now I just can't get this one. I wish it was explained a little beter. I still think this guy is the best though. I'll figure it out

  • bah...why was this removed?

  • I am having a hard time learning the second part through at the first :/

  • bad part you should explan more like first part

  • Which string should I press at 3:01? plz help

  • I use 3 fingers for that chord i have no idea how he does it with one . on 4th 3rd and 2nd all the same fret.

  • what about the top one that he pressed? looks like 4 string to me....

    thanks for the help

  • We do it all the time with bar chords. Just press in flat with one finger to cover the 3 strings.

It would be a bit tricky to play it fast, need a lot of practice to build up strength of the fingers.

Also this section is a bit of Mike's own interpretation of the original. That is what art is all about, I think.

  • Is it just me or tabs are different than videos?

  • yeah i noticed that aswell

  • Ya the tabs are a bit different alright, which is a bit frustrating at first. Its not as well explained as previous parts, but easy enough to work out. Really great videos in general!

  • hey Mike, great vids

  • Mike..please can you show us the finger picking/plucking patterns of the bar chords G-C-F-B flat...instead of just a quick strum..which is spoiling the whole piece. Thanks.

  • You are an extremely foul mouthed and illiterate misogynist, who can only express himself through profanities.

Mike has written to me personally, and was happy to answer my question.

I do not expect to be spoken to like this.

You will now be reported to You Tube.

  • good cover....but u know you're holding the guitar wrong with your left hand. You should move your thumb down to the center (or below center) of the neck instead of hanging it over the top. It makes it MUCH easier to hit difficult frets. Its not only the professional way, but it also helps you play better.

  • can anyone plz tab this part

  • to guick!! but good lesson! 5*

  • Great lesson's...

  • Buy the DVD, it's worth it.

  • DVD???for what? where?

  • this part is pissin me off dude

  • bad part^^

  • I hates this part!!!

  • Just curious why you don't play it the way it is tabbed in the Mason Williams song book?

  • i don't get what you do at 1:40 that struggles me :S

  • Yh sure Eric Clapton's version is good, the same for Mason William's.

But the best has to be by Tommy Emmanuel :)

    Great teacher btw :P

  • Wow awesome I think I got it. Thx ur the best.

  • Thx for your videos. You plaid it real fast this time tho. I'm not sure I got this right on the "second time" of the first part. BUt i'll practice. Thx again :)

  • omfg i love you

    hahhahahah

i've lernt everything in the past lessons.i

    in

    ONE

    day

    hahaah

    thanks soo much (Y)

  • man this guy is amazing teacher he taught me how to play this songg in less then a day i have never fingerpicked this is the first time and i have never played a classical piece lol i barely know more then 4 chords :S

  • Just wondering, this is the original Mason Williams version with like full orchestra right? I heard this song for the first time yesterday, started learning it today, but I think the tab I've got is Eric Clapton's version. Any chance you could teach that too? ; )

  • Clapton never recorded this piece. Although there are versions out there attributed to Clapton, usually it's nothing more than the guitar-only version (without the orchestra) played also by Mason Williams.

  • made it to section 5! not up to speed yet, but sounding ok and hope to get better.

many thanx for your time and generosity.

    this is a gas, ...classical

  • great video but a bit too fast for me. where do you get the tabs from?

  • look in the description

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to break this down...

I also employ the, uh, 'cricket bat' grip...

    Works for me...

    Cheers!

  • actually i dont like your vids so much cause u're just to fast for me, but im still learning from you because your tabs are the best ;s

  • dude im very appreciative of u teachin this song and i got the whole thing except fer like 132 to 140 u dont explain slow enough

  • What B Chord Was That Again

  • im not sure but keep it up

  • the little bits i couldn't learn by sight i learned by ear aint that supposed to be a good way to learn guitar give it a try moaners

  • a very basic principle that i was tough from day one and i also tell anybody i teach is the "one finger per fret rule". when you move up to fifth position use your little finger to play the C and the ring finger to play the C-flat. also you might find it beneficial to stop holding the neck like a cricket bat and out your thumb on the back where it is supposed to be. some beginners might see this and copy it and find it hard to correct later. good job on the teaching and the lessons tho!

  • Er....who said the thumb has to be on the back of the neck. That's rubbish. The principle you were taught is simply incorrect I'm afraid.

  • wow...mike you are grat :) thanks a lot :)

  • i really apreciate you taking the time to make these videos mike, your a great teacher, i'm only 13, and I can play this song really well thanks to you
